Astartes will always be bittersweet to me. On the one hand its mind blowing that one dude managed to create something that so beautifully captures Warhammer 40000, on the other hand were likely to never see anything remotely as well made as it again.
If nothing else we can be happy we at least got something of this quality rather than nothing at all. It will always be a niggling reminder to Games Workshop should they fail to meet this standard in the future.
I'd have more hope. GW hired Syama Pedersen (the Astartes project artist) on to their own team. He was the animator for the Horus Heresy cinematic trailer. If that's anything to go by, then I should think his career of making cool stuff is far from over.
@@RocketGurney Sure, but they hired him before they started the Warhammer+, and that started like a year ago, if not longer. And there is nothing to show for it.
I am pretty sure the psyker asked for the guard, since he is the highest ranked character in the story. I think he knew that he will die diving the warp.
@@Irrespons It´s probably more of a general operating procedure to have some skilled and heavily armed and armoued combatants around when warp fuckery like that is preformed. For exactly the case we see here. Take out the psyker thats getting posessed before it can get really going. Considering that this is, from the attack he blasts into the warp and that he is an inquisitorial psyker, probably quiet the powerful one, the whole ship could have quickly been lost.
Executing him as fast as possible is just about the only mercy they can give him unless they have a blank or a null rod, both of which are unbelievably rare. It's the only chance they have of saving his soul, not to mention avoiding a total disaster like a daemonhost.

something that was pointed out to me was that the inquisitor psyker probably used his final moments saving the Astartes who were sucked into the orb, the psyker's presence in the Warp was represented by black smoke/mist which surrounded him while he listened to the orbs speak to each other and it was a blast of black mist that made the creature release its hold on the marines
Sadly the creator stated that it was a random warp entity. However, I am still sticking with the inquisitor having sent that blast, if atleast subconsciously. Because the best and worse thing about 40k is nothing is Canon, and everything is Canon.

The orb said "No escape. I have failed. We have all failed. The Astartes defy our touch. You must return! Break your seal! We'll never survive. You must take them!" And then the Priest says "Recall them immediately!" then the Priest gets possessed.
Long story short, here is what happened and why in Astartes: All the grey armored warriors were Astartes, which are genetically engineered super soldiers with minds and bodies many times more powerful than the "baseline" humans who saw them stomping. They are called Space Marines, and are from the Adeptus Astartes Chapter "Retributors." (The creator of the animation made this chapter up for the videos, they dont exist in the lore) This detachment has been sent, probably ordered by the Inquisition, to destroy the orb artefacts we see in the video. A squad was sent on a breaching pod to enter the ship, which they did by flying at it and cutting into the hull with lasers, kill any they encounter, and render the warp artefacts inert or destroyed. On their way to the orbs, the squad encounters a pair of psykers. These psykers are powerful beings who possess a connection to "The Warp." It is a dimension connected but also separate to our own. There creatures which are created and fueled by the power of mortal souls and powerful emotion seek to corrupt or destroy mortals and their dimension (mostly just because). The masks you see their pair of psykers are called Psychic Hoods. They allow psykers to channel their powers much more controllably, as some psykers, if they are not extremely powerful, or attempt to channel forces more powerful than they are, can go mad, become focal points for rifts into the warp, or even become demon possessed. Inspite of what you might think, the pair of psykers we see are not particularly powerful ones. The most powerful psykers, called Alphas, can be capable of destroying cities or star ships. This is probably one of the reasons they wear the hoods, to give them a boost in power and control. Also, the hoods allow another person a measure of control over the wearer. The Astartes squad kill them in short order, and proceed into a vault in the enemy ship, which is likely psychically shielded, to find the orbs. When the astartes "stab" the orb, we see a connection has been made with it, which allows the Inquisitor back on the Astartes ship to essentially listen in on the psychic communication between the orbs. This was clearly not a good idea. After the unintelligible conversation the Inquisitor hears between the orbs, this is what the orbs said to each other. Orb1 "who is here?" Orb2 "I have failed, brother" (couldn't stop the marines or corrupt them) Orb1 "We have all failed" (he's captured) Orb1 "the Astartes deny our touch" (they have a hard time controlling them) Orb2 "You must return... Break your seal!" (returning from the warp to "normal" universe and get free from the inquisitors seal) Orb1 "Impossible, we'll never survive!" Orb2 "You must. take the alpha" (the inquisitor since he's the highest ranked and has psyker powers, he is the "Alpha". If the orb controls him, it has the entire ship 'the Daemon that is.'). This is where the inquisitor drops his concentration to warn them, (“Pull them back immediately!”). The inquisitor is immediately corrupted by the power of the warp wielded by the orb artefacts, and we see him receiving visions, chanting heresy, and finally succumbing to madness. As orb 1 (the daemon) does this, it takes control of the inquisitor, but before it can do anything the commander warns his troops ("Get them out Now!")and takes the soon to be possessed inquisitor out. The impulsor sergeant (space marine) receives comms to watch out but its too late and the Daemon of orb 2 sucks them into the warp. Warhammer 40k is extremely hostile space the moment it uses its psyker powers within the warp it lights up like a Christmas tree and other daemons kill it thus it lets the marines go and they get warped to a different location. Fun fact... if the commander was a second or 2 slower the entire ship would have been corrupted and they would have died. Also possessed Psykers are very hard to kill, blowing off the head doesn't mean they are dead, you really have to dismantle the whole body." Immediately we go back to our hero Astartes squad and see why they were warned. Their orb "takes" them. Dragging them within the confines of the orb. We dont really know where they go when we see them tethered inside the orb. Whether the Astartes are in the warp, or a psychic vision, some other place... who knows. What we do see is that our hero Astartes are then teleported (through the warp - which is why he throws up blood) to a death planet. And that is basically what the story of Astartes is.
I'm pretty sure the black shadow thing was the inquisitor's soul giving The Orb a final "F U" cuz if you look at the scenes of where the Inquisitor is listening in, he has this like black shadow that emamnates from within him.
That's a very good description. I think though that the blown off arm and damage from the psycher is the more likely culprit for the coughing up blood. Now, that blood looked weird. Do space marines have nano-bots in their bloodstreamm?
@@connorbennett1517 afaik no but their blood clots much much faster than a normal human which is probably what you're seeing happen to his blood... maybe.

Calling Psykers mages is some what accurate but also understated. Their are ones like Mephiston from the Blood Angels who can stop time or Njal from the Space Wolves that can call lighting and ice storms from nowhere and the Psykers from the Salamanders who can literally breath fire. Blood Raven Psykers just steal other people's shit so arcane rogue is close for them.
Feel like it's not really understated. Like DnD top tier mages can stop time, rend apart the boundaries between planes or call down meteors. Ice Storm, Dragon Breath, haste, all of that is pretty mid teir in most high fantasy settings. Besides most psykers are nowhere near Mephiston
True most Psykers are no where near Mephiston, dude is scary. I guess I should of compared them more to paladins since Marines are walking tanks and spell slingers.
Thing is psykers don't lift a brick with their mind...they channel the literal energies of hell to bend reality itself to force that brick to be thrown directly into someone's skull
After my third "yes, but no..." this video made me dwell into the 40k lore and games after sometime i understand what was happening in this video... thanks to this video it made me want more 40k lore. i understand what you were saying, yes it's hard to explain 40k lore without starting from the beginning
Warhammer has always been described to me as "the lore is so dense, long running, complicated, and fragmented, that there's no point in trying to get into it." With how difficult it is trying to get into Fate, I don't know if I'm ready for another franchise like that lol.
Astartes piqued my interest in 40k. The algorithm then blessed me with lore channels suggestions. And now I collect 40k miniatures. I'd call myself a player, but I haven't played a proper game in some time, though I do keep up with the new editions and rule updates.
Thing about 40k is, the scale is absolutely immense. This story is just about ONE mission by ONE squad of Marines on ONE ship encountering ONE eldritch foe, orbiting ONE planet. The Imperium (as far as its administration can tell) rules a million worlds scattered all around the galaxy, like individual particles of water in a cloud of mist. And the logistical distances between each are equally fluid. At all times there are great tragedies, horrifying atrocities, epic heroism and dastardly schemes going on at different parts of the galaxy and the setting offers ten thousand years of active history to play any and all of it out.
Just a realization about the “world” the Marine arrives at in the last shot. We know from an interview with Dan Abnett that the Emperor has died and revived many times on the Throne (since he is a perpetual and CHOOSES to revive at his same body) that the image of all the emaciated corpses on thrones could be a visual representation of how many times the Emperor has died while on the throne. Maybe a Chaos entity is attempting to tempt the Marine away from the Emperium by showing his “God” is dying constantly, or it’s a manifestation in the warp of the Emperor’s suffering that has been relegated to that world in the Warp.
The story surrounding Astarte is as divisive as it is fascinating. Astarte began as a fan animation but the guy was contacted by Games Workshop who went on to hire him (and other people who made fan animations). However, as a part of the deal he had remove the original video which is why you won't find high quality uploads of it on TH-cam. It IS uploaded onto Warhammer +, Games Workshop's animation streaming service. . thing. . with some modifications. I'm sure someone out there has the highest possible HD video. . but they ain't sharing it out of Warhammer +

The accuracy of the bolters always amazes me cause those things arent just “Exploding Red Bull cannons” They can go full auto, but marines don’t use it as such cause recoil is basically trying to hold and aim a machine gun while standing
Well jeez, it's almost like someone should have *put a fucking stock on them.* Doesn't really matter how many recoil dampeners the power armour has built into it, a stock is really a basic solution to a basic problem and with it and the dampeners they could let it rip full auto with zero issues. That's one of my biggest pet peeves in 40k honestly.
Rather than machine gun its a rpg launcher in full auto, so a bit more kick than mg. On the other hand, why would you be wasteful with holy rounds, blessed by many a techpriest when you are a walking tank and have enough time to aim cause very little can even possibly damage you
Nasel spray size caliber actaully. Red bull canon would be a about a 40mm or more. Understandable with the fact bolter shot explodes when in the target
@Random Platypus with Internet well full auto isn't necessarily a spray and pray thing, there are tactical reasons for it like suppression, and also the fact that not all 40k enemies are man sized. For instance if old one eye or skarbrand suddenly appeared in front of a group of marines it would make a lot of sense to go full auto, and it wouldn't be a spray and pray thing but well aimed shots, which would be made easier by a fucking stock.
@@bonogiamboni4830 I mean it’s not really expressly stated but certain chapters of Astartes do modify their bolters so it’s not out of the question for them to have that. but in a boarding situation I can see why they would forgo it and make use of more accurate shots given the limited amount of ammo they can bring with them. They only really used full auto when suppressing a physker anything else is overkill and a waste for them to be suppressing.
9:10 to a comment in the chat, the tau probably can be psykers but they haven't had their psychic "awakening" yet -->so there are no current tau psykers.
"what is this" last words of everyone before falling into the grimdark future. Also to answer some questions 1) some psykers have cybernetic enhancements to stabilize themselves when using powers, or to help navigate ships around the warp (basically 40k version of hell), if they are incautious they can get corrupted by chaos(like the dude who got fisted) 2) dude with different armor might be a primaris, which is stronger in everyway compared with normal astartes Correction by brother Alex : dude is a veteran marine, one with cape is a captain or lieutenant 3) psykers come from many races (except the Tau due to their weak minds and the Tyranids, which works in a singular hivemind) side note : Tyranids can have psykers if a gene stealer infects a psykers, resulting in a potential psykers strain. 4) technically speaking every Ork is a psykers due to something called "the Ork power of belief". Basically they can belief stuff in existence, e.g. they belief red makes stuff go faster, so It did. 5) space templars are basically the black templar chapter an the grey knights (demon hunters) 6) the orb might be a corrupted warp drive, the ship uses it as an engine to enter, navigate and exit the warp. If I recall one of them showed up in space hulk deathwing Correction : it's a xenos species If only us questoris get some love rather than the astartes
Just figured you may want to know, the orb is an ancient xeno that only has fragments of lore throughout the books, and Primaris Astartes weren't added to any chapters for another 2,500 years or so.
One correction I will give you for the slightly different looking space marines with the white armor portions. They are most likely veterans (the one with the cape could be a captain or lieutenant, with the other one being a simple veteran).
Necrons don't have psychers, instead they have Crypteks who are masters of the physical world. Necrons are more anti psychic, they used to have a unit that would work against them called Pariahs
Star Trek: We create a warp bubble around our ship to bend space and let us move faster than light. Star Wars: We enter a place called hyperspace where everything moves faster than light. Stargate: We have a network of portals that lets us travel the Universe almost instantly. 40k: Yeah, we just take a shortcut through Hell.
Astartes is honestly one of the best depictions of Space Marines I've seen on the internet, the first few shootouts shows that the Cultists are well armed, but the Space Marines are just so far beyond their levels it's not even funny. But like with the Twin-Linked Multilas, and the Psykers it shows Space Marines *do* have weaknesses and can be killed.
The Psykers shown are actually pretty low on the power scale. In one of the books a rogue human psyker was placed in a machine that was meant to drain all of his power then transfer it to another being as this would kill him he fought back and even with his power being actively weaken by the second he was about to send a psychic pulse so powerful and deep into the ground it cracked the planets core, triggering massive earthquakes and volcanic eruptions that ripped the planet apart killing him and everyone on it and he was still only classed as a B+ in power!
The scales kinda iffy. These would probably be lower class C. Every class kinda has their own slider, and just power alone isn’t everything, some use their powers very widely and are stronger than more powerful patchers due to it.
An Alpha is more commonly accepted as being a planet cracking psyker, an upper Beta could do it too, but basic combat psykers are in the Delta to Beta range, everything else is more or less based on either personal specialization (Astropaths for example are technically weak and need to be in a "Choir" to be effective) or necessary augmentations like a psychic hood.
10:13 That a Inquisitor and it looks like he was being possessed by the orb, and it's better to put down those that are about to be possessed than after, since daemons are something to not fuck around with.
I think most speculation goes that the guy was a psyker in service of the inquisition, not an actual inquisitor, but I forget the reasoning. Maybe it was something like full psykers aren't allowed to be proper inquisitors because risk of corruption or something?
@@rayanderson5797 i don't know about that, from what I've seen these a far amout of Inquisitors with psyker abilities or lesser. But this guy being a servant of a Inquisitor does make sense, they have WAY too much ego to do this themselves
@@rayanderson5797 It's probably just statistically more likely that the guy was a psyker in service to the inquisition rather than an inquisitor that was also a psyker. Both psykers and inquisitors are kind of rare, so overlap between the subsets of the population is kind of special. That said a decent number of inquisitors in the books are psykers, so I guess pyskers are a bit more common amidst the population of inquisitors than among the general human population. An argument can be made that inquisitors may not want to dirty their hands by doing the dirty work of the operation themselves, so the actual inquisitor might be orchestrating the operation at more of a strategic/administrative level rather than actively performing that kind of psychic monitoring of the orbs himself. All of that said, we've also seen inquisitors across a whole spectrum of personalities so we can't truly jump to a conclusion about how hands-on the inquisitor might be. Personally in my opinion the portrayal of the psyker didn't seem important enough to be an inquisitor and he felt more akin to one of the disposable red-shirts in star trek. At the end of the day though I don't think that we have enough information in the film to conclusively decide one way or another whether or not he was the inquisitor in charge or just part of the inquisitor's retinue.

We know why. GW shut the creator of Astartes down with NDAs, just like everyone else who made good content. We won’t hear from him for another two years at least as a result.
Lumi, I'd recommend Bricky's videos about the W40k factions. He does a great job at touching the broad strokes of each race while also getting into their more character defining specifics.
Bricky is good if he's talking about a race he likes. He does a good job talking about the Imperium, Eldar and Orks. Every other race he kind of undersells. His Tyranid/GSC lore was especially bad.
Bricky is a good opening for new fans, especially his Adeptus Rediculous podcast. Luetin is for hardcore learning, Majorkill is for short term learning and memery
As much as I enjoy watching people react to this masterpiece. One peeve with Astartes in particular is that it is so dense with details that whenever a streamer watches it and also interracts with the chat, they inadvertently end up missing a LOT of awesome details. Like the start of part 2 where the brothers are revealed or the scene with the smoke/flash grenade and shooting through it. It just makes my blood pressure rise. At least pause the video!
@@Episcopicide I don't fault them for it. It's important for them to interract with the chat. And in this instance, I feel like she focuses on the chat when nothing particularly flashy is happening in the video. This would be fine in most cases, but Astartes has been refined and distilled down to where these slow moments are short but still dense with content. Unfortunately Astartes is an exception to the rule where in most cases you either don't have these quiet moments at all or they drag on for way too long.

@@malcolm_in_the_middle ...hence, why I also mentioned the Lamenters. The Salamanders are not the only ones who are kind to civilians, true, but I wouldn't call peoples admiration for them "simping." That is an autistic way of describing fans of the Salamanders and implies that there is some weird parasocial relationship between fans and the salamanders themselves, which is impossible because the Salamanders are fictional. Other then that, yes: Of course there are other Chapters that treat civilians kindly. The Lamenters and Salamanders just happen to get the spotlight often because GW likes to highlight their deeds and disposition in their media (look at "Pariah Nexus" or Steve Parker's "Death Watch" for proof of that). Otherwise, if you don't like people being fans of them _because_ the Chapters like the Lamenters or Salamanders are objectively good, then I think that is more of a reflection of you then it is of those fans. People like the good guys. Especially in a Grim-dark universe like Warhammer 40k because such goodness is so rare, and is reflected against a setting backdrop that is often, at best, some shade of grey. 8 was a multi laser not a las cannon a las cannon would have put a hole through the space marine not bounce off his armour. las cannons are anti amour weapons designed to take out tanks, multi lasers are anti infantry designed to mow down lightly armoured troops
a bit of correction on psykers psykers aren't a specific race or faction, they are just individuals who have an afinity within the warp/realm of souls and are able to bend it to their will based on how creative they can be Another factor that contribute to this is that different species have their own sort of presence in the warp, Eldar have a strong presence explaining how most of their race has psykers like farseers, Humans have a sort of noticable presence like a candle and the same goes with Orks and other species Edit: As for chaos, their psykers are basically human or demon depending on which of the 4 chaos gods they serve in
you kinda end up numb to it like " oh a giant demon thing ill just get my commander to call in an orbital bombardment my a be an extra 10 just to make sure its dead"
No matter how much time has passed, I just love the really small detail of the senior marine (Sorry, it's been a long time since I've seen rank insignia) gesturing to one of the marines on guard to exit the room From what I remember mostly Astartes of highest seniority were the ones that directly dealt with chaos corruption as to minimize influence Like that detail and even nailing the bolter round timers just makes me fall in love with the attention to detail of this series
Thanks for giving me another reason to rewatch Astartes. Unfortunate you missed a bunch of things by interacting with chat but it is what it is given how dense Astartes is.
“Are there more proficient ones?” Well, the only known Alpha level psyker has been on life support for ten thousand years, so there’s that. Pretty scary.
The complete absence of good guys in the 40k setting is part of the appeal. You can make cool brutal battles without feeling too bad about their horrific deaths. The Imperium of Man is a collapsing, impossibly authoritarian regime so huge that it’s probably going to take all of humanity with it when it finally starts to stop meaningfully existing. The setting is so chock-full of things gnawing at the empire’s decaying carcass that you can literally plug in anything and people will just shrug, because no matter how bad it is, there are too many problems for it to register as too much. You can do wild shit with the setting just because of how collapsed things are at any given time, one of my favorite stories is about a regiment of aliens who are legally human because the paperwork to fix it is literally scarier than being executed, because it really, literally is a longer, slower torture than anything any Imperial Inquisitor or Lord of Torture can possibly come up with.
Hearing the way they said "what are pyskers!?" put a smile on my face. To see someone, or rather hear in this case as the weird vtuber thing cant capture all the emotion very well, get excited and interested in 40Ks wacky lore is always a great experience.
40K is a massive series and well worth looking into. Luetin09 is great for lore, very in depth but a little dry. Bricky is good for a lighter, more memey explanation, but gets a few things wrong. With Astartes, I think the creator made up some of things within it (the orb, the specific psyker characters, etc), and there mightn't be a proper explanation for what it is.
Oh I love how earnest you are in your questions. Thank you for sharing this video I'd never seen or heard of it before. Makes me want to get back into the hobby so badly.
Thought I’d share some context for those here with similar questions to Lumi here. The Space Marines, more formally known as Adeptus Astartes, are transhuman super soldiers organised into chapters. Each individual Space Marine is effectively a one-man army and are altered with some extreme bodily enhancements. They are each adorned in power armour capable of shrugging off all but the strongest weaponry and their standard weaponry is a rifle-shaped rocket launcher known as a Bolter. Put simply, they’re medieval knights in space. Psykers are people with some sort of connection to another dimension known as the Warp. This connection enables Psykers to wield space magic. It’s a bit like the force, but far more dangerous. Without proper training, Psykers can and will become a danger to themselves and everyone around them, as their connection to the Warp can result in insanity, unstable powers or even daemonic possession. For such reasons, the existence of Psykers in the Imperium (the Human empire) is a bit controversial. Chaos refers to the powers and factions aligned with the Warp. The Warp is inhabited by ethereal entities manifested from the thoughts and emotions of all sapient lifeforms, with most of them being referred to as Daemons and the four most powerful are the de facto rulers of the Warp and are referred to as the Chaos Gods. Chaos also has a significant influence over real space, and can easily corrupt the minds, bodies and souls of mortal beings. As such, the forces of Chaos are usually made up of Daemons crossing between dimensions, Human cultists and even corrupted Space Marines.
Surprised no one told her to not look away. It goes so fast that chat is making her miss lot's of small parts that tie the action together at first half of the movie
You probably found out already but ppl hate the dark elves/eldar for more than just their orgies. The orgies do play a large part but there are very specific reasons for that, I'm sure most ppl in 40k wouldn't care abt an average real world orgy.
They were called "Weirdboyz" among the Orks and can channel power from the Warp but relative to Orks' gestalt field. Their connection to the Warp weirded out other Orks and social outcast within Ork ranks.
@@chocolatesquirrel2002 All Orks are technically psykers. If you have enough Orks around during a WAAGH they generate a psychic gestalt called a WAAGH field that makes almost anything into reality if enough Orks believe in that concept.
5:50 For anyone else who is confused about this (as I would've been watching this a year ago, before I bought Gladius and fell headlong into WH40k lore): All human technology in the WH40k universe is based on a level of mysticism. Every piece of tech, from firearms to massive skyscraper-sized combat mechs, has a "machine spirit" that has to be tended to, cared for, blessed by the Tech-priests of Mars, and occasionally cajoled to work. The precise nature of this isn't strictly tech or magic, it's a mix of both. This applies to Psykers too - they draw their power from the Void lords (so think something like Warlocks in Warcraft, basically borrowing power from a cosmic force), but they still rely on energy shields and even power swords to back up that "magic." Since all Psykers draw power from the Chaos realm, they are also inherently dangerous and can turn traitorous at a moment's notice. Think of this like mages in the Dragon Age series - even the good mages must tap into the Fade, an inherently evil realm, to draw their power. Anyhow, if you really want to understand it all - and even I'm no expect - get prepared to spend the next 40+ hours reading. WH40k has the densest lore of any IP I've ever seen. Tolkien is light reading by comparison. But it's worth it.
A "brief" summary of things. A before you go on there technically are no "good" guys, but there are clear bad guys (chaos). Space Marines or Astartes: Super human warrior monks that were originally designed by the Emperor of Mankind to be the elite shocktroops/protectors of humanity. Originally organized into 20 legions of varying specialties each with a Primarch (a son of the Emperor, demi-god like figure and general/statesman) that they get their genetic traits from. An event known as the Horus Heresy caused a schism where half the Legions and sons joined with Horus in rebelling against the Emperor after Horus and many others fell to the taint of Chaos (orchestrated by the traitor Erebus of the Word Bearers legion). The loyal legions after the war was broken into chapters of no more than 1000 (some don't follow this rule, but it's rare) marines led by a Chapter Master (or equivalent rank depending on chapter customs/traditions). The chapter is further broken down into companies of 100 and then into squads. It's rare to see more than a squad's worth of Astartes in an engagement and when a conflict calls for more than a companies' strength of Astartes then the situation is really, really fucked up. Their armor makes them basically walking tanks that can run at superhuman speeds and their basic weapon: the bolter fires a 75 caliber round that basically is the equivalent of old fortress guns/anti-material rifles. For a normal human to operate a bolter it would require a team to do so otherwise they'd shatter every bone from the recoil. Imperium of Mankind: Humanity's government that is led by the Emperor of Mankind (stuck on his golden throne) that encompasses millions of worlds. It's a massive entity and is a shadow of it's former self. The Inquisition: Humans that are charged with hunting heretics, traitors and other threats to humanity by any means necessary. Inquisitors are generally not liked because they tend to rub others the wrong way (by means of pointless executions and even destroying whole worlds to stop the spread of Chaos). They range in ability from well-trained and well disciplined warriors/investigators to psykers to incompetent and corrupt individuals. They're a mix of the FBI, KGB and Spanish Inquisition in 40k and even have a couple of Space Marine chapters they can call on to handle the worst of situations. Deathwatch is a chapter they use to combat alien threats and the Grey Knights are called when dealing with daemonic threats. Psykers: beings that can tap into the energies of the Warp that gives them unnatural abilities. They're basically sci-fi wizards/sorcerers or 40k with their abilities depending on how strong their bond is with the Warp and level of training. Abilities range from conjuring fire, firing mind bullets, moving objects, seeing into the future and tapping into the Warp to guide who ships/fleets. Spaceships of the Imperium require Psykers to navigate through the realm known as the Warp otherwise they'd be lost in a realm of un-ending torment and time. Other psykers act as communicators (Astropaths) over the massive distances of the Imperium's territory. Psykers are seen as a good and bad thing in 40k. The Imperium does use psykers on the battlefield and in everyday actions, but they're still a taboo subject. The Space Marines too have psykers known as Librarians that their duties include keeping the chapter's records while aiding their brothers in battle with their abilities. Typically psykers are looked at something to fear since the forces of Chaos uses Warp entities and psykers in horrific ways. Heretics: A broad term used to describe traitors to the Imperium that shy away from the Emperor of Mankind. Mostly though this is used to describe those that turn to Chaos. Chaos/The Warp: a realm between realms that once was known as the Realm of Souls. Now after countless millenniums of war and strife (not just human wars) it's become a twisted version of it's former self where horrific daemonic creatures and gods reside. The four gods of chaos live in this realm plotting and planning schemes against one another and the galaxy at large. The traitor and corrupted forces of the fallen Legions reside here as well, escaping the Warp to reap destruction upon the galaxy. Unless properly shielded the realm of the Warp will mutant and corrupt any who stay there long turning people into warp-twisted monsters and mutants or even (if they're "blessed" by a Chaos God) daemon prince.
Why am I always late to the party? XD Astartes (pronounced As-Star-Tees) was an amazing fan project that use old 40K fans can appreciate, while grabbing the attention of new fans alike. The Space Marine chapter features is one the animator came up with. This is pretty common in the table-top game too, since there are so many chapters made over the centuries you can basically make your own. Also, the in-universe title for a Space Marine is 'Adeptus Astartes'. The bad guys in this series are a group of rebels, mostly normal humans who tries to break way from the Imperium of Man. The two guys with mask are psykers, individuals who are able to use psychic powers. The 'spine' thing on the back of their heads is likely a form of 'psychic hood', a device which helps focus and amplify a psyker's powers. The spheres are an old race of psychic entities called 'Yu'vath'. They were beings that lived partially in the real universe, and partially in an alternate dimension called the 'Warp', that used to enslave planets till the Imperium arose and started to wipe them out. At the end of the series, when the sphere starts to pull the Astartes into itself, it's forceably transporting them into the Warp, which is essentially Hell itself. When they're let go when the Yu'vath is attacked by something in the Warp, they're pushed out of the Warp onto a random unknown planet.
Conversation between Chaos Spheres at 9:20 S1; WHO IS THERE? S2; I HAVE FAILED BROTHER. WE HAVE ALL FAILED. THE ASTARTES DENY OUR TOUCH. YOU MUST RETURN. BREAK YOUR SEAL. S1; IMPOSSIBLE. WE WILL NEVER SURVIVE. S2; YOU MUST. TAKE THE ALPHA.
I’m not sure why this was recommended but god am I glad was. This was such an enjoyable experience seeing someone enjoy Astartes and the lore. By the Emperor you have earned a sub
Those weren't A-rank (Alpha-rank) Psykers, those were at most Epsilon Psykers. If they were Alphas they'd have folded the Astartes and snapped them clean in two easily. Psykers also aren't their own faction, they get randomly born into the normal populace and are highly valued for their capabilities but also feared because of their volatility (they can go pop and suddenly you have a daemonic incursion if the Psyker is high enough of rank for example).
Welcome to a massive universe you'll likely love but never want to set foot in, you asked if it was good guys vs bad guys, not quite it's bad guys vs slightly worse guys and it's not entirely clear which side is which.
Imagine the ... mid-century Germans (TH-cam censorship) fighting Chulhu. And The Mummy, who is also The Terminator. Plus the bugs from Starship Troopers, who also have the bugs from Alien. Suffice to say: Astartes are not overkill, but rather just enough to help hold things together.

something that was pointed out to me was that the inquisitor psyker probably used his final moments saving the Astartes who were sucked into the orb, the psyker's presence in the Warp was represented by black smoke/mist which surrounded him while he listened to the orbs speak to each other and it was a blast of black mist that made the creature release its hold on the marines
Sadly the creator stated that it was a random warp entity. However, I am still sticking with the inquisitor having sent that blast, if atleast subconsciously. Because the best and worse thing about 40k is nothing is Canon, and everything is Canon.

perhaps it is just me but i didn't hear it clearly. i thought it was "gibberish", not actual talk
@@olegoleg258 Someone did an analysis video.
It is very extremely muffled, but it is legitimate dialogue.
Long story short, here is what happened and why in Astartes:
All the grey armored warriors were Astartes, which are genetically engineered super soldiers with minds and bodies many times more powerful than the "baseline" humans who saw them stomping. They are called Space Marines, and are from the Adeptus Astartes Chapter "Retributors." (The creator of the animation made this chapter up for the videos, they dont exist in the lore)
This detachment has been sent, probably ordered by the Inquisition, to destroy the orb artefacts we see in the video.
Orb1 "who is here?"
Orb2 "I have failed, brother" (couldn't stop the marines or corrupt them)
Orb1 "We have all failed" (he's captured)
Orb1 "the Astartes deny our touch" (they have a hard time controlling them)
Orb2 "You must return... Break your seal!" (returning from the warp to "normal" universe and get free from the inquisitors seal)
Orb1 "Impossible, we'll never survive!"
Orb2 "You must. take the alpha" (the inquisitor since he's the highest ranked and has psyker powers, he is the "Alpha".
Also possessed Psykers are very hard to kill,
blowing off the head doesn't mean they are dead, you really have to dismantle the whole body."
Immediately we go back to our hero Astartes squad and see why they were warned.

Blood Raven Psykers just steal other people's shit so arcane rogue is close for them.
Feel like it's not really understated. Like DnD top tier mages can stop time, rend apart the boundaries between planes or call down meteors. Ice Storm, Dragon Breath, haste, all of that is pretty mid teir in most high fantasy settings. Besides most psykers are nowhere near Mephiston
True most Psykers are no where near Mephiston, dude is scary. I guess I should of compared them more to paladins since Marines are walking tanks and spell slingers.

5:42 the cyber parts you're mentioning were just additional spines those psykers were wearing/had implanted
And all before tea time.

The wholesomeness and curiosity of Lumi discovering the joys of WH40K is more than my old heart can take.
The accuracy of the bolters always amazes me cause those things arent just “Exploding Red Bull cannons”
They can go full auto, but marines don’t use it as such cause recoil is basically trying to hold and aim a machine gun while standing
9:10 to a comment in the chat, the tau probably can be psykers but they haven't had their psychic "awakening" yet
-->so there are no current tau psykers.
"what is this" last words of everyone before falling into the grimdark future.
Also to answer some questions
1) some psykers have cybernetic enhancements to stabilize themselves when using powers, or to help navigate ships around the warp (basically 40k version of hell), if they are incautious they can get corrupted by chaos(like the dude who got fisted)
2) dude with different armor might be a primaris, which is stronger in everyway compared with normal astartes
Correction by brother Alex : dude is a veteran marine, one with cape is a captain or lieutenant
3) psykers come from many races (except the Tau due to their weak minds and the Tyranids, which works in a singular hivemind) side note : Tyranids can have psykers if a gene stealer infects a psykers, resulting in a potential psykers strain.
4) technically speaking every Ork is a psykers due to something called "the Ork power of belief". Basically they can belief stuff in existence, e.g. they belief red makes stuff go faster, so It did.
5) space templars are basically the black templar chapter an the grey knights (demon hunters)
6) the orb might be a corrupted warp drive, the ship uses it as an engine to enter, navigate and exit the warp. If I recall one of them showed up in space hulk deathwing
Correction : it's a xenos species
If only us questoris get some love rather than the astartes
Just figured you may want to know, the orb is an ancient xeno that only has fragments of lore throughout the books, and Primaris Astartes weren't added to any chapters for another 2,500 years or so.
One correction I will give you for the slightly different looking space marines with the white armor portions. They are most likely veterans (the one with the cape could be a captain or lieutenant, with the other one being a simple veteran).
Necrons don't have psychers, instead they have Crypteks who are masters of the physical world. Necrons are more anti psychic, they used to have a unit that would work against them called Pariahs
Thank you for the info

Astartes is honestly one of the best depictions of Space Marines I've seen on the internet, the first few shootouts shows that the Cultists are well armed, but the Space Marines are just so far beyond their levels it's not even funny.
But like with the Twin-Linked Multilas, and the Psykers it shows Space Marines *do* have weaknesses and can be killed.
More of his work can be seen in the Horus Heresy cinematic trailer, and the leaked Patreon teasers. His work on Astartes 2 is still going on
the kill team trailer also has his style written all over it, seems he's transitioned into a director role over there
And chaosgate daemonhunter teaser.
I sincerely hope he’s still making Astartes 2. Maybe he can release it on his own without GW butchering the quality.

@@xatariumjanuary6203 I doubt that's his work, the marines in Daemonhunter don't have the quick, economic movements that the Horus Heresy trailer do

"Are space marines templars or, Tutonic nights but in space?"
Me, a Black Templars Player: "Yes"
If a B-class psyker can destroy a planet on their own the Emperor or Magnus should be able to crush a planet in the next solar system over
An Alpha is more commonly accepted as being a planet cracking psyker, an upper Beta could do it too, but basic combat psykers are in the Delta to Beta range, everything else is more or less based on either personal specialization (Astropaths for example are technically weak and need to be in a "Choir" to be effective) or necessary augmentations like a psychic hood.
Well, not all Psykers are OP.

The theory is that they were up against remnants of the Yu'voth.
I'm pretty sure that wasn't an Inquisitor. A psyker working for one, sure, but not one themselves.

Of all the Astartes reaction videos I've seen to this point, this one was strangely the most amusing.
Lumi will forever wonder why like the rest of us. Good series that was cut in its prime.
Just like our boy Sanguinius.😔
We know why. GW shut the creator of Astartes down with NDAs, just like everyone else who made good content. We won’t hear from him for another two years at least as a result.
@@OneBiasedOpinion They offered the guy a job at GW but unfortunately it's like giving Einstein a rock and string and expecting him to make a rocket.
Not even its’ prime, right at the beginning! We’ll never get to know how much better Astartes would’ve become.
Because GW are greedy bastards and actively discourage creative projects like Astartes with legal threats and intimidation.
If you wanna know details of what things are most likely I wanna say Arch did a video about this way back when and talked about the orbs and such.
Lumi, I'd recommend Bricky's videos about the W40k factions. He does a great job at touching the broad strokes of each race while also getting into their more character defining specifics.
@Hidetaka Miyazaki Luetin goes hard in the lore, while Bricky goes with memes and soft explanation of the races and some lore
Bricky is good if he's talking about a race he likes. He does a good job talking about the Imperium, Eldar and Orks. Every other race he kind of undersells. His Tyranid/GSC lore was especially bad.
In that video yes, but you should see the podcast he has my god
and then, there's Majorkill...
Bricky is a good opening for new fans, especially his Adeptus Rediculous podcast. Luetin is for hardcore learning, Majorkill is for short term learning and memery
The joy and wonder of someone discovering 40k is always a delight. This is why we need projects like astartes to exist.
Agreed completely. So many streamers can’t find that balance of when to pay attention/reply to chat.

If you want to fault somebody for that, well... that is your prerogative, I guess.

a bit of correction on psykers
psykers aren't a specific race or faction, they are just individuals who have an afinity within the warp/realm of souls and are able to bend it to their will based on how creative they can be
Another factor that contribute to this is that different species have their own sort of presence in the warp, Eldar have a strong presence explaining how most of their race has psykers like farseers, Humans have a sort of noticable presence like a candle and the same goes with Orks and other species
Edit: As for chaos, their psykers are basically human or demon depending on which of the 4 chaos gods they serve in

Well, the only known Alpha level psyker has been on life support for ten thousand years, so there’s that.

She's so down the rabbit hole by now XD
Month later she'll be painting her Chaos Marines legion :D
Astartes can be many things, but not one-man army.
Surprised no one told her to not look away. It goes so fast that chat is making her miss lot's of small parts that tie the action together at first half of the movie
We’ve got a seriously “cultured” vtuber here! You don’t see many vtubers watching this
You probably found out already but ppl hate the dark elves/eldar for more than just their orgies. The orgies do play a large part but there are very specific reasons for that, I'm sure most ppl in 40k wouldn't care abt an average real world orgy.

"ass tarters" ww
That is the Emperor's A#s
That “please be patient, I’m female.” Hat came in handy
Welcome to the twisted world of 40K. There is only war, and the Emperor protects.
Why am I always late to the party? XD
Astartes (pronounced As-Star-Tees) was an amazing fan project that use old 40K fans can appreciate, while grabbing the attention of new fans alike.
Actually space marines were a thing since 1978, so actually Spaces marine came first waaaayyyy before Halo did which halo got released in 2001.

As far as 40K is concerned, all the good things have already happened.
Welcome to a massive universe you'll likely love but never want to set foot in, you asked if it was good guys vs bad guys, not quite it's bad guys vs slightly worse guys and it's not entirely clear which side is which.
It's safe to say chaos is the worst
Imagine the ... mid-century Germans (TH-cam censorship) fighting Chulhu.
And The Mummy, who is also The Terminator.
Plus the bugs from Starship Troopers, who also have the bugs from Alien.
Suffice to say: Astartes are not overkill, but rather just enough to help hold things together.
@@Muir97 really? remember that the warp and thus chaos is a mere reflection of the minds of living material beings, humanity being the largest contributor currently.
@@SiegeTF When a 75mm rocketpropelled mass reactive explosive round fired by a massively modified genewrought supersoldier in the most advanced armor humanity has ever massproduced merely dents things ye it's safe to say it's not overkill
You have been reported to the Adeptus Arbites for heresy.
God, Astartes is still such a killer intro to 40k, and seeing Lumi so excited to learn and ask questions warmed my cold, dusty heart. So much so that I wanted to just lore dump down here in the comments
