Suikoden 2 is an absolute masterpiece, perfect in almost everyway. It is my favorite RPG between all systems, one of my fav series, and definitely one of the best RPGs of all time. One of my saddest days was when my physical copy went missing, and it has never turned up. I had bought it for 20$ when blockbuster went out of business and Quake or Quake2 was bundled with it. @@jaretco6423 do it sooner than later. You won't be disapointed. Too lots of fans surprise but suikoden 3 was my least favourite, in terms of battle mechanics anyways. Story and characters were great as normal, just didn't like the random placement when your characters move in battle and if they end up in the AoE for any attack spells you cast then they're taking major damage too, if not dying. I liked 4 too most people surprise, it was a bit different and I did find the characters to be a little bland and generic compared to the previous 3 games. Tierkries for the DS is fine game as well, a bit different again but mixes in a lot of the good from the first 2 games in with its ideas. @eschcal9839 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think I've played in about 5-6 times in my lifetime. I'm a fan of a protag essentially being the sidekick character. The tech and skill system was nice and added unique flavor to every character, though your party is pretty much the same characters afterwards. The old alien cleric was amazing and could restore TP to everybody, but never could stay alive in the final battle. The pure melee alien sucked. I think 1 one choice you get is either Kyra due to nice combos with others, or your favorite robot like Demi. The human tech user is awful. Honestly, there are characters that hit hard enough and still have good abilities. Wo wants to spam attack or use spells that aren't any better?
I really wish they fleshed out the machines more, and let you fly in space with one. The way sprites looked in it put me off at first while moving out of battle, but I quickly adjusted. In the end, very linear stuff with 1 or 2 areas that are optional, with pretty clear end game eq everyone uses. The lack of variety sucked some, but that is a way to make the difficulty just right by the designers. I felt like I actaully accomplished something. Games like FF6, 7 and 8 forgot how unique characters with a certain skillset is better. Everyone spamming the same spells from the same list really wore on me by 8 I was so sick of only sprites and limits being the only was characters differed in battle.
9 got back to it in style, everyone had flexable but clear roles. 10 was real strange, and again everyone could be everything. And you had to hold back "leveling" until you got items to fill empty stat slots or you went crazy skipping them. 12, again, curaga spam. The Zodiac system release was better imo. The story sucked ass in the end, I beat the boss it thought he was just another one along the way. Anticlimatic AF. I think FF5 and FF4 were skill systems done right. Either set roles, or a limitt to what you can do so you end up specializing roles. Its what I loved about FF Tactics. I miss that they'll never make another one that isn't online BS and its such a huge waste. I think they all held up.

You could release it today as an indie title and it would feel perfectly modern, in fact, with the fixed time blocks it would feel right at home next to similar systems in Persona. I need to give a shoutout to Vagrant Story -- this game was ridiculously far ahead of its time in terms of its writing, storytelling, cinematics, depth of its combat and crafting systems, and just overall presentation. What a masterpiece! And an undeniable technical triumph on the PS1! There is really other game on the system that can compare to what they achieved with Vagrant Story. Not even Metal Gear Solid. Admittedly, Vagrant Story does have some issues with its clunky interface, slow animations, and tedious weapon swapping. All the more reason this game needs a quality remaster (or even better, a remake). This game is way overdue for a comeback!!

Dude, what are you talking about? Vagrant Story is one of the most horrible (visually) jrpgs on the PS1. The game is rightly known to have aged so badly.
And the game's story wasn't ahead of its time. There were already countless superior stories written before.

Phantasy Star IV is a great game, without question. And while PSII and PSIII both had issues that drag them down in some important ways (PSII was grindy as hell, with drawn out dungeons that take forever to get through), I think the first Phantasy Star has aged well as well. It's more basic to be sure, but the exploration isn't drawn out, the visuals are good for an 8-bit machine, the music is memorable, and the gameplay is pretty snappy for an RPG of that era. And when you look from the surface and you see more criticism than appraisal, you... Hold back your coins, isn't???! That's exactly the case of these two games you cited and that's the current videogame industry mindset. No matter as much as we - the 35-40 years old JRPG gamers - are aware of how GOOD these games we're talking about are, WE are PLAYERS and they are CEOs, and they will never look to videogames as we do. And Y-E-S my man, these current executives take into account new audiences more than you imagine. Did you REALLY find Spectral Souls more convoluted than Knights in The Nightmare????? Well, ok then... If you say so 🤷🏽‍♂️

Don't know if they're QUITE 20 years old - Way too lazy to look up proper release dates, though 1 of them very likely either is, or is really darn close.
But 2 games that I'd personally say have aged abnormally well, would be Skies of Arcadia (I legitimately think this game is still more advanced mechanically-speaking than most modern turn based games...) and Radiata Stories.
I replay both of them regularly, and can 100% say that SoA doesn't feel like it "aged" at all outside of the graphics, which aren't even really "bad", and while there's parts of Radiata Stories that have slightly aged, it's still such a fairly unique and special game that you barely feel it at all.
And yeah, I agree completely with FE7. I can quite honestly say I don't know if I would've been nearly as big of a fan of the series if I'd started with any of the earlier or even later titles.
7's a true masterpiece of a game, and I honestly don't think it's really possible for it to "age". The only things it'll ever really need is resolution upscales and maybe a proper 100% true-to-original console rescale, so that UI elements' sizes make more sense if playing it on a larger screen.
Though not JRPGs, I'd also highly recommend and suggest any RPG enjoyer to look into checking out the (probably the "enhanced edition" remasters available on steam/technically consoles) original Baldur's Gate and Planescape games. Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 and Planescape: Torment have legitimately amazing stories, writing and characters, and the remasters even feature an official "story mode" difficulty that basically just activates god mode so you literally can't die, if you don't want to learn how to play old-school D&D properly. And despite the graphics being a... little outdated, the games themselves overall hold up immensely well. (2 and P:T probably more-so than 1, though.)

Was looking for this comment! Technically The Lost Age doesn't qualify for this list but if Fire Emblem's on here I think it's fair to include it.

@@GrimoireM if we take in account that both games were intended to be one, but were separated in two due to gameboy constraints, i think it's fair to assume that they're both one. Also they released in the span of two years

In my opinion, most of the old pixelart JRPGs I liked growing up have aged pretty well, I can't say the same for the early 3D ones tho... xD

Symphonia for me is always my answer. The art style is timeless, the gameplay is still solid to this day, and the story is one of the best.

Same except the gameplay is considered to be clunky by a lot of people. I remember struggling with it at first too, but once you get the hang of it it's super fun.

Can't agree. I finally played it last year. The texture on Chibi models weren't appealing to look at, and the gameplay is not only clunky, but how you play 2d on a plane where can roam 3d was not fun. I can respect the game for a good first try in 3d, but man did the later games really fix the issues Symohonia had for me.

2 years off! Then you could have picked Shadow Hearts Covenant for its wrestling scenes. (It also has a great ending song: Getsurenka)

Finished suikoden 2 recently and man good ending and end bosses, well and some other bosses were a total pain. Went to look and see what i had to do to catch up on both soaking up and dealing absurd damages and well...that wasn't funny. Otherwise game was great

So many 16 and 32 bit system rpgs have aged so well, probably 100+ and it's glorious.! I still have probably 20+ rpgs in my backlog I haven't even played yet, trying to stretch them out for next 10 years :)

Breath of Fire II is fantastic. I love the shaman fusion system, the characters are great and diverse, the story is epic, the music is memorable, and the difficulty is just right. I also think making your own town and recruiting who gets to move (and even who gets to build it) is a very nice touch.
Overall, one of my favorite RPGs ever.

I've been looking for something to cure my Valkyrie Profile itch... Nothing does it. Not even VP2.
Looked up a ton of games on reddit and found none I liked. :( FF6 and VP1 are some of the best games ever made hands down.

I had Grandia II on PS2. It wouldn't boot. After a long series of experimentation, I came to the discovery that the game is actually not compatible with certain models of the console, and I just happened to have one. The disc was perfectly fine. The game even failed to load when I attempted to play it from an external drive via Free McBoot. It just wouldn't play on that one console. It was really weird.

The original release of FF6/3 on the SNES had quite possibly the most jarring translation ever. I have the original nintendo power guide for it, and I tried using it with the GBA where they fixed the translation, and it was nearly unusable lol. The game itself is still astonishingly good though.

2 and 3 are mechanically superior and generally more difficult than the first one. SH1 is pretty simple and easy, esp if youre going back to it, but its still good. Other than that, you'll just get a bit of clarity from what was going on in 2 from 1
