I am a white, Afrikaans South African and I can only speak Afrikaans and English. Its happened so many times that someone said something to me in their native African language and I couldn't understand them. I want to learn Zulu so that I can communicate to more South Africans in their native language and get closer to the other cultures of our country. I am 16 now so hopefully by the time I enter the workforce I'll be able to speak fluent Zulu and maybe start learning other African languages as well. Formal lessons are a bit expensive so thank you so much for these videos, they are extremely helpfull albeit it the clicks are more difficult than I thought they would be😅
I believe you will do well with this. Don't get stuck on the sounds, continue with the other lesson videos, and keep coming back to this to work on the sounds that you find challenging a few minutes each week. Just note where you left off. And subscribe to my email list on my website, you will get more notes.

My mom and ugogo come from South Africa and my mom came to America when she was 9 and still speaks the language and I told my grandma I want to learn Zulu so I can be bilingual like my ugogo Esther And mama and I can speak it with them. I learned a small amount of Zulu from my ugogo and I want to continue learning more Zulu but it was hard to because I could only call my grandma for 15 minutes when I was locked up. I had to hand write everything what she said so it was hard. Now I am out and I am thankful that I can actually learn Zulu a lot easily. Thank you

Im African American and we used to always click as a child, didnt know why, later found out we are Zulus stolen during slave trade.

Yes, I don't always hear clicks as often as I would think when I've heard isiZulu dialogue in films and series, for example. And how do you whisper the clicks?! Haha.

My tongue hurt from pronouncing these sounds, but I think I'm getting hang of it. The combination with "G" seems to be the hardest to pronounce for me, and I also struggle with words where there are 2 clicks one after another. 😅
You're welcome. Yes, the ones with a G are the deepest click sounds. And thus require the tongue to work harder. I believe you will master it over time. Don't rush yourself. Also, you can always go straight to the point of the video you want to practice each day. That way, you don't make your jaw and tongue tired.

Sawubona Thando. Awesome video! You're absolutely right, this definitely needed a separate lesson. My throat feels tired from the workout it just got. Ngiyabonga Kakhulu for the lessons; I remember in Durban my preschool had Zulu as part of the curriculum, but then it got cut. I missed it; I much preferred it to learning Afrikaans. Sala gahle!

Unjani mfundisi. I have been following your isizulu teachings and i have seen that most words are similar my mother most african words we use in African countries. You are doing a great job, ngiyabonga kakhulu.
Sawubona Nash, ngiyaphila. Wena? Yes, you're right. The Nguni languages are so similar. Sort of like what you find with Romance languages. Which is great because it means it won't be so hard to learn each other's languages. What languages do you speak?

@@nashzambia3987 yes! sometimes i don't even need to see the translation to know the meaning of a certain word. extremely similar to nyanja and bemba.
I have been able to pronounce “Q” and “X” conveniently. It’s the “C” that I have trouble with. English is the second language where I live. I can say I have been able to learn these clicks with passion… but still trying to get my “C” right though! ❤
I can do the C and the Q very well, but I can't do the X for the life of me!! 😭
What sound do you hear when you lay your tongue flat behind your top front teeth and the pallate? It's almost like the clock sound.
For me, it almost sounds like the sound of a person could make in while kissing.

What I found the most challenging is to understand the translations. I have a c2 level in English but there were some words I didn't know, and others that were so specific I couldn't imagine ever needing them.
I'm enjoying your lessons so far. Keep up the good content. I hope to surprise my friend by speaking some Zulu soon. Hopefully I'll get to go use some Zulu some time out in Africa as well. Perhaps later I'll do a Zulu language challenge and try to up my abilities in a particular period of time. I don't know if you would like to be involved in such a video, but I'll let you know! I usually use google translation and TH-cam videos and some friends I've met on facebook from South Africa and Swaziland. When I talk to them sometimes and use the little Zulu I know they think Im from South Africa and not Amerikkka. Lol but they laugh when on some words that requires a click I put too much effort into it but it's because they're showing love and even try to help me with the language lol. I'm glad you have me other sources to watch to learn Zulu Language. The original main source I used before google was the "Shaka Zulu" miniseries and for Xhosa it was "Black Panther".( I even have a Black Panther suit). I’m a little confused… What part of my tongue should I be using to make the Q? I have the others pretty well, but the Q is the trickiest one for me.
Sawubona. The tip of your tongue should touch the ribbed part of your palate (roof of your mouth).
I always thought I would have a good phoneme distinction hearing but this sounds all seem exactly the same to me.
Maybe the c I can pronounce but the others I can't distinguish. And my tongue is not that fast and movable
It should come with practice. I took a Zulu module in university, and I had to do orals. It seemed apsolutely impossible, but over time with practicing the speech over and over again I started to be able to speak faster and form words.

I've more or less managed to pronounce the sounds on their own, but I can't figure out how to use them in words. Like, my tongue just stumbles. The C class is fine, but the X and Q are hard, especially when there's a i sound before. I just can't make it flow. Will keep practicing!
Keep working on it Alexa. You will get it. Don't only focus on it. Work on acquiring vocabulary and work on the grammar. The more you perfect the other sounds, you will find yourself making the x and q better as well. Give it time.

Give yourself time. Move on to other lessons, and keep coming back to this, focusing on one sound each time.
Speak positivity and reinforce affirmations. You do yourself a disservice when you close your possibilities with "I don't think I will ever be able to..." statements. Practice, practice, practice is the key.

So the Q and the Gq has been a thorn in my side since I started this journey… any tips on how to make it a little clearer especially since popping my tongue isn’t something I do on the regular any help is appreciated.
Sawubona Robert. It really comes down to playing around with the positioning of your tongue on the roof of your mouth. The more detailed videos on sounds will be posted around the end of October, for members only, of course. But don't wait for that: make your tongue pointy, lift it to the rough part of the palate, stiffen the rest of the tongue, in the middle, length wise, then pop. If you do not make your tongue pointy, this won't come out correctly.

Sawubona Marwa, be gracious with yourself. The sounds are not something you hear regularly around you, so it will take some time. Don't worry though. I am here to help you. Which one do you struggle with the most? Also, don't get stuck here though, follow along the other videos. I will suggest you start with the more boring stuff first. The Grammar. Trust me.

How do you do the x click sound when some (or all) of your back teeth are missing on the side that you used to use for clicks? What do you use as "replacement sound" then?
With one jaw. It might be the left or the right, depends on the person. But I use my left most of the time. Don't clench your teeth. There should be a small gap between your top and bottom jaw.

Yes,there's a writing system of Southern African indigenous languages called 'Isibheqe sohlamvu' in isiZulu .It has visual logic originating in traditional arts.

I keep trying to practice the click sounds, but I can only get the 'q' click sound right, and the 'c' click sound somewhat okay, but I can't get the 'x' pronounced right. Would Zulu speakers still understand me if I don't pronounce the click sounds the right way?
Sawubona Fabian, yebo, we would still understand you. The ones that I would advise to work on the most are the hl and dl sounds and all their variations. Those are the ones that actually need more work.
For me it's the q I can't get correct, it's kind of frustrating, but I'm still trying.

why you say isizulu and not just Zulu?
IsiZulu is the language, Zulu doesn't really mean anything without a prefix. The prefixes matter a whole lot!

KwaZulu: The land of the amaZulu Nation
IZulu: heaven
EZulwini: in heaven
UZulu: The nation of amaZulu

I don’t know why but I’ve been practicing all the letters from this video and the other one like non stop for the last few days and I’ve gotten all of them down pretty well but the “gc” “gq” and “gx” for some reason I’m having so much trouble with those. But as soon as I add the n like for “ngq” I can say it just fine. Help me! 🥺
the 'gc' try to press the tip of your tongue to the palette. The 'gq' pops, with the tip of your tongue on the ribbed part of your palette. 'gx' is with your jaw, but a little stronger than the stand alone 'x'. I hope this helps. Also, don't get stuck here. Keep practicing with the other videos and you will find yourself doing it soon.
