      for sure! Especially as she was gone, but we were in the open in relatively low viz! Also when we surfaced and had to wait for the boat, there was a "moment". But, we went back down for a second dive but she was gone ;-(

    I so hated to see her trailing that damn line. Hooks, lines, and pieces of netting are far too familiar in videos of these magnificent animals. What a GREAT video! I've long since retired from diving but would have given much for an experience like that - if my pulse rate could bear it:)

      amazing, i have been freediving for a couple years now and im cosidering scubdiving. but im also very interested in the new underwater drones that can go up to 100 meters deep. they are a bit pricey, but you can see way more stuff than when scubadiving. and you dont need to be very fit either :D

    Amazing encounter of a beautiful shark! Perhaps the rope everyone is mentioning actually might be pinniped intestine? In a couple of frames, it looked to be coming out one of her RHS gill slits. In any case, if this was intestine, it definitely explains her girth and the indication that she may have recently fed.

    This is incredible! I can’t imagine what that must have been like. Such a privilege to share the water with this buddy. 🦈I’m from Western Mass, although I used to live in SoCal, and out here we’re becoming known for our White shark conservation. They have always been part of the ecosystem here,, but it’s only after their long-overdue protected status in the 1990’s that they’ve finally begun to reclaim their rightful place in our waters.

    • @SailingIdefix
      @SailingIdefix  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      We were told after the fact that she was just curious and in case of an attack, we would not have seen it coming. But Sharks don't attack divers, usually afraid of bubbles. Maybe she was indeed asking for some help with the rope!

    • @djstuntfox

    Beautiful animal.
    That is definitely a female as it is missing the telltale claspers on the lower belly which would make it a male.
    She looks quite pregnant and probably just weeks or perhaps days from giving birth. If she had given birth while you were filming you would have made a fortune as no film has ever been made of a Great White Shark giving birth.
    This video clearly contradicts all the BS about these sharks being mindless killers. If she wanted to she could have killed and eaten all of you.
    She was merely curious and checking you out.
    I have had encounters with dozens of different sharks including Great Whites, Tigers, Lemons, Makos, Black Tip Reef, Hammerhead, Sand Tigers, Threshers, Blues,
    Pelagic White Tips, Bulls, etc. during my 40+ years of diving. The one shark that deserves the most respect and I consider the most dangerous of all is the Bull Shark. They will simply attack with no provocation or warning.
    Again great video and damn shame you couldn't have helped remove that line from that beautiful dinosaur age creature. I wish her a long and safe life.
    Thanks for sharing, Cyrille, and be safe out there.

    • @SailingIdefix
      @SailingIdefix  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      agreed. i dont get while people blame so much on them. she was checking us out, we'll never know why. Maybe just curious as not used to see divers at this depth. Maybe because due to shark feeding, she got this line on her teeth and now associate divers with food, or problem. Or maybe she was hunting around the wreck and we just came disturbing her territory. She wasn't afraid of all the bubbles we were making but eventually got scared of the uw-scooters.

    they can say not aggresively,but her posture says different.whether that was because she felt threatened,or because of rope , i couldnt say,but mouth agape,& fins pointed down says she wasnt happy.it could be that because the water was murky & felt an animal presence , she was alert for an attack,especially given that she looks pregnant,but that could also mean she had only just fed.the good thing for them is that they kept somebody facing her,because if there had been loss of any sight between them,then that could have been a trigger.to be fair it could also have been a stay away from me sign too,but i doubt she has had many actually approach her . this is why its so hard to read what these signs are meaning at any given time.just like with humans,they probably show similar emotions for various different situations , & probably the best reaction to all of them is to stay calm,because you cant expect anybody facing you , to stay calm,if your not yourself.

    • @SailingIdefix
      @SailingIdefix  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, very hard to read, especially we had no experience and no clue about big shark behavior (got many updates from marine and sharks specialists AFTER!). Mostly, we were exited because such an encounter is so rare. I believe she would have been stressed because of the rope in her mouth. Wether she was asking for help is a totally different interpretation :-) we didn't really have in mind in these short minutes ...

That's the biggest thing on my bucket list is to see one up close but I'm definitely not stupid enough to get in the water with one!!!! Unless you cage dive, which maybe isn't that eco-friendly, it is very unusual for scuba divers to see GW. The bubbles and noise really don't call for for regular sea lion food stuff. This is why we still feel super lucky about this encounter!

I used to swim in salt water hell I grew up learning how to swim in the bayou's of Louisiana but after my cousin lost a foot to a 9 foot bull shark you couldn't get me in that water! All of the years I've fished off of the coast of Louisiana I never knew that white sharks come into the Gulf of Mexico and I didn't know that they come to the mouth of the Mississippi River chasing tuna! My cousin was fishing for bull reds at the mouth of the Mississippi River and he had a red cut in half then as it was happening again he thought it was either a Tiger or bull but as the fish got closer to the boat he saw a 13 foot great white chasing the red! I'm sorry but you are crazy getting in the water knowing that those monsters are there!!! Good luck and stay safe!!!!!

      @@williamoleschoolarendt7016 Well, i am not sure i would dive in murky water and in the rivers in Louisiana cost indeed. Issue is visibility too. Bull sharks are probably more dangerous than GW just based on the waters they swim in. Also in general, scuba diving would likely be safer in shark areas than swimming early mornings or late afternoon with a drysuit. You just look like a sea lion at feeding time !

      @@SailingIdefix we were water skiing in Lake Ponchatrain years ago and my cousin jumped the wake of another boat going the opposite direction and when he fell we circled back around to pick him up and right as my other cousin reached for his hand the bull shark hit him! It clamped onto his ankle and when we wrestled him away from the shark his foot was gone! Lake Ponchatrain is brackish water especially near the canals and bayou's that feed into the lake! We were close to a bayou when it happened! Lately since they have been opening the Bonne Carre spillway we haven't seen as many sharks! In fact a few years ago when they hadn't opened the spillway in a while we had reports of Tigers being caught and seen in the middle of the lake! I'm really beginning to wonder if they don't open the spillway for a few years I wonder if the White shark's would enter Lake Ponchatrain since they have been spotted all around the southern coast? Anyway Peace out stay safe!!!

    Sharks are very misunderstood and its critical we protect them from commercial fishing and fishing in general. They are a key pillar of the food chain and essential for maintaining healthy oceans. I wish the powers that be, would clamp down on the exploitation of our oceans, not just sharks but all forms of commercial activity with in the oceans. This clip helps prove they are not the mindless man eaters the media would have us believe, they are just really large underwater puppy dogs.

    Does anyone agree with me that she may have been pupping? That's why she was Leary of the divers. Also, does anyone know what the line was coming off of her? I have NEVER seen a white swim with its mouth open the entire time like that. It looked like she may have been in some distress?? To me, this video was sad:(. If it was a hook and line, it needs to be removed:(. She is obviously VERY pregnant and it may be interfering with her feeding and then the outcome of her pups!!:(.

      Maybe she was pregnant, but seems difficult to confirm. Could be well fed (good :-) which in this case make them look very fatty (their liver would get very big to store energy for a long time). Maybe both, who knows. I prefer to think she was well fed and curious rather than pregnant and hungry!
      Difficult to tell about the line as well. It is possible it was from some shark feeding event where they attach a tuna head to a line to attract the sharks, and this line got entangled into her teeth. I doubt there was a hook as the line was big and didn't seem to be a fishing one. But nothing is sure. She may have been in distress, but helping by removing this line would have certainly been a different challenge.
      I understand the line is a big negative, but i wouldn't call the experience nor the video "sad": It is rare to see GWS with divers, and it is good to show that such animals can be just curious and not dangerous.

I don't believe in teasing the beautiful creatures with a bait line and dangling it in front of them for our pleasure. If this is indeed what the line was, look at the outcome:(. That's why I said it was "sad":(
      D idnt know you were in the UK. That's an even more AMAZING experience as I believe until fairly recently, there was a misconception that GWS weren't in your waters (at least from the videos I have watched). Ocearch and other shark trackers (trackingsharks website) have very good directories of dorsals. A group in NZ modified facial recognition software to “barcode” the fin into 3 section for more accurate identification. If I can find her name I’ll come back and post it.
