Have we ruined Koh Phi Phi?

  • Koh Phi Phi has changed a lot over the last 10 years since we first came. Have we ruined it? It's a difficult question and it depends on what you are looking for. Back in the day it was mostly backpackers that came, but now it is far busier with way more hotels, a large Burger King & a McDonalds.
It feels like there are very few backpackers now and that there are a lot more tourists in general. For us, it feels like the island is suffering as a result but maybe that's us.
Have we (tourists) ruined it? That depends on your viewpoint and what you want. If you want to drink buckets, party and spend time at pool parties then you'll probably have a great time still. Just down't expect it to feel like it did if you came here a few years ago.

Yeah, it’s a shame as we loved it the first couple of times we came to Phi Phi.

It sure looks like. :( This is what I feel like at many of my travel destinations. But I guess we are a part of the change since we go there.

I guess any beautiful or famous destination (the film “The Beach” was shot here) will always get busier. For me it becomes a real shame though when they aren’t properly protected and we start to damage through shear numbers, pollution etc Some places handle this well with environmental taxes etc that are put back in the local community etc but others not so much...

Yeah our experience was very similar. We loved it the first couple of times we came but it’s really changed now.

@@ArunsTravels I could wait to leave to be honest. Everything was so much more developed and too many tourists being sick urinating and having sex on the beach and on the roads! Such a shame.was the most beautiful place I’d ever been to. Wouldn’t return and your comment about the beach vibe is totally accurate

D D agreed. It was really sad for us as we’d had a great trip so far on Koh Lanta & Koh Lipe and we were really looking forward to Phi Phi. I think the kind of people going there has changed a lot plus there are just too many now.

Don’t forgot it was also ruined by the 2004 tsunami

Sure but I’m talking about the over development in the last few years. Koh Phi Phi was hit really hard in 2004 but I went in 2006 and it was back to normal.
