Bandung's Best Market 🇮🇩

  • Let's explore Bandung's best market - Pasar Baru.
The market mainly exists in a "Trade Centre", which is what Indonesians call a very casual type of mall where it more resembles a market, except it's indoors.
There was a huge variety of products available there, including local traditional batik clothing. The local clothing I was looking for, however, was the jersey of Bandung's football team - Persib Bandung.
Usually when I hunt for a sports jersey it turns into a huge adventure to try and find one. Here, however, the football shirt was easy to find. That was thanks to the locals showing me where to go. Everyone I met in the market was very friendly. Even if they couldn't speak much English they were very willing to try to help me out.
After paying 2,000 rupiah ($0.13 USD) to use the bathroom, just so I could change t-shirts without getting bare-chested in front of the lady shoppers at the market, I was now proudly wearing my nice new 60,000 rupiah ($4 USD) Persib Bandung jersey.
With the football shirt mission complete, it was time to reward myself with some local food. There "Trade Centres" always have a food court on the top floor, so I headed there and ordered some Soto Bandung, a local soup.
It was some kind of beef in a clear soup with vegetables. It was tasty but felt healthy. I'm not sure about the price though. At 45,000 IDR ($3 USD) it seemed like double the price I'm normally selling these types of soups advertised at when I'm out and about. Since they didn't have any prices on their menu I'm a bit suspicious that they gave me the 'bule' aka 'white man' price.
After buying some more Bandung t-shirts in the market, I rewarded myself again. This time with a fresh coconut. The coconut vendor split the top open with only 4 chops and I had myself a nice and natural electrolyte beverage to slurp on as I wandered the streets.
I returned back to my hotel, which was 1km away by bicycle rickshaw, or a "Becak' as they're known in Indonesia. Again, I thought I was being quoted the foreigner price at 60,000 ($4 USD). When I travel that distance by car using the Grab app it's about 12,000. So it didn't make much sense for a bicycle rickshaw to cost 5 times that.
Anyway, I bargained it down a bit to 50,000 and headed back to my hotel. Perhaps being the only guest at Hilton Bandung that's ever arrived there in a becak.

FYI in Pasar Baru Bandung for locals or foreigners the food more expensive than street food, instead u can buy premium or quality goods with cheap prices😄. And the price for "Becak" worth it because the becak puller priced Rp 50.000 (about $ 3,25) cause he has to go back to his place or base so it counts 2 trips and Indonesian face with price increases "inflation" and they just have few passengers and should to deposit money to becak owner because they rent from the owner of becak. Enjoy Bandung home of football, fashion, music, and food, Dale!!!

The nice t shirt you mentioned in 45:03 is Batik, our traditional clothes. Every region in Indonesia got their own special motifs. In Cirebon we have Mega Mendung motif, in Tasikmalaya we have Priyangan motif, in Bali we have Ulamsari motif, and so on. We usually wear them for formal occasion such as attending people's wedding, traditional ceremony, etc. Teachers and students also wear Batik uniform at school every thursday or friday, depends on their school rule.

I'm not from Bandung but I'm from another part of the country where you can find those kind of food court in almost every mall. I'm glad that you asked them the prices,. It's not bule pricing, but they will always give you an insane pricing compared to a dedicated restaurant/food stall inside the mall or street food vendor. From my experience it's starts from 50% mark-up to eye-watering 400% mark-up in some cases. I'm fine if it's actually good meal, but most of the time you'll be disappointed and even think that you're getting scammed. You'll get a much better deal AND quality if you eat somewhere else.

    • @tmsgaming3986

Your negotiating skill with the shop seller is awesome! It shows that you also know about the average price of things you buy. Amazing, since some seller sometimes set the price much higher for foreigner.
Btw please be careful and I suggest you not to wear Persib jersey in Jakarta 😁

Hi Dale, i live in Bandung and I enjoy watching your video.
I can say the price for 'Soto Bandung' is quite overprice and normally its around IDR 20k-30k and the price for pedicab is around IDR 20k from Pasar Baru to Hilton Hotel.
For the other stuff I think the price is quite good.
    Hope you enjoy your trip!

Hello Dale, just recently found your vlog since the Jakarta part and i love it so much!! 🤩🤩
As a citizen of Bandung i can tell you that you can get a much muchh more cheaper price for that Soto Bandung & Rice outside Pasar Baru food court. But it's not like they gave you the expensive price coz you're a Bule, 40k - 60k is the normal price range at that place (the normal price outside is 15k-20k IDR), not many local people eat there coz it's been known for their expensive price.
And yeah, the Becak driver was giving you the Bule price there. 60k from Pasar Baru to Hilton is just too much. Strongly advised you to just use Grab Bike (the motorcycle taxi, not the car) if you want easier transportation access with reasonable costs.
Also if you'd like to try our local street snacks, you might want to taste some food like: Batagor, Seblak, Lumpia Basah, Cireng Isi, Jasuke or Tahu Sumedang! You can get those foods in a foodcourt area too if you're not sure about the hygienic in the street vendors. Have fun and enjoy your stay in Parijs van Java!! 😊

As an Indonesian, it would be a pain in the ass without translation because only about 40% of the population speak English fluently. Always ready your google translation audio just like what I did in Japan, makes travel way easier and save times.

LOL if you call going to an Indonesian market very relaxing... LOL
      It's STRESSFUL lol
      1. Gotta find the tight parking spot (if THERE'S any left).
      2. Squeezing through the crowd.
      3. Haggling tough.
      4. Give some "charity" to them beggars & street performers (otherwise they get angry lol).
      5. Finding your way through the smelly maze, with people staring at you, and offering your myriad merchandise
      6. Now get your car/cycle out safely through the MIGHTY crowded street.
      7. Finally back home, phew! Phew!
LOL I wouldn't call that relaxing.

Yes, the food is a bit more expensive than usual, those are restaurant prices. The price for rickshaw/becak service is very expensive. You have to try the food at the populist food stalls, which are very cheap and no less delicious! You can use public transportation, angkot, to travel, it's cheaper, only US$ 0.3 for a distance of 5-8 Km. I hope you don't get bored always come to Bandung, Bro!

Hello I'm from Indonesia. Well in many places like in food court inside the mall or for this case the place that you came in this video, the prices for the food usually higher than usual. So in my opinion your price for the soto bandung is totally makes sense. Except for your orange juice. i think it was lil bit expensive because usually the orange juice's price is just 10.000 rupiah.

44:00 he's just kidding Dale, he speaks Sundanese which if you understand what he means it's very funny, Sundanese people are very happy to make other people laugh
55:00 Becak is expensive transportation in Bandung, because it is usually used to carry a lot of groceries, usually the normal price is around 30-50idr depending on distance ,the owner said going to the Hilton is expensive because the road is a bit uphill

52:30 Becak is always on more higher prices than any transportation mode and it's understandable that in some area (especially in Bandung, Yogyakarta) they charged more higher bcs the traffic is really complicated (some area only have one way traffic that you must get round around to only get to a certain place).
