$0.06 Market Snacks in Toraja, Indonesia 🇮🇩

  • A day of exploring in Tana Toraja.
I jumped on my scooter and travelled from my home stay in North Toraja, down to Tana Toraja.
My first mission was to find Jesus. In this predominantly Christian area of Indonesia, there is a massive Jesus statue at one of the highest points, looking down onto the village. It was surely built with inspiration from Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro.
I arrived at the Jesus Christ Blessing Statue in Buntu Burake, Makale and realised there wasn't much to do there, other than admire the statue and the incredible view.
I did very much enjoyed the drive up there, however. The second half of the journey was on mountain roads that were beautifully paved, with brilliant views and barely any traffic.
After visiting Jesus I decided to visit Makale town centre. Makale is main town in the Tana Toraja regency.
I went to the Pasar Sentral (central market) there and found some friendly people selling local cakes and sweets. I sampled a few of them and liked everything I tried. So I bought a big back full.
These cakes cost just 1,000 rupiah each. That's just $0.06 USD!
There wasn't much else that interested me in the market, other than a souvenir Toraja t-shirt. So I bargained for one of them and then headed out onto the streets.
I was looking for something to eat when I found a meatball shop. A pork meatball shop in fact. As there are so many Christians living in this area, it seems that the sale of pork isn't limited in any way, and is readily available.
I enjoyed my Bakso Babi (Pork Meatballs), which was served in a nice soup. These Indonesian meatballs are very different to the meatballs we have in Europe. In Indonesia they use tapioca as a filler, which makes them cheaper to make and gives a very chewy texture.
As the soup was very salty, and I was already struggling with the hot weather, my next mission after leaving the meatball shop was to find myself a nice refreshing drink, such as coconut water or Cendol.
I ended up finding a vendor selling something called Pop Ice. This is some powdered drink that's sold in small sachets. The vendor had dozens of different flavours and I chose melon flavour.
He added a lot of extra ingredients and toppings to the drink, so it was amazing value at just 5,000 rupiah ($0.33).
Feeling refreshed, I was ready to head back to my homestay in Rantepao, but a local man invited me to his home to try his wife's Pisang Ijo dessert.
I had planned to continue the adventure a bit longer but the weather changed quickly and ruined that plan. Instead, I waited for the worst of the storm to end and rode my bike back 30 minutes in the rain to the comfort of my homestay, a hot shower and a lovely home cooked meal.

Yeah...especially when I live in India and whenever I go to market there are people trying to sell things with unfair price, especially if you are a foreigner...someday i hope all people in India would also have this kind of honest behaviour.

Dale, the price for the t-shirts 100.000 is very close if not his actual cost. Those are not mass produced, only made for the local region, so they are much more expensive than the cheap ones you'd find otherwise. I know because I have specialty t-shirts made for me in Indonesia as well.

lol didn't expect to see the older brother of my old friend in the thumbnail, it's quite a lovely surprise to see familiar places and faces as I haven't been in Toraja for years now. Took a good look and I remember him, didn't know he sells cakes and cookies now. And I think that's his mom or auntie scolding him for giving you stuff freely but he said in Torajanese "Let him have it, I'll pay for it". Good guy by the way. They are of Bugis ethnicity but live peacefully with us Torajanese in the town. There are other ethnicities living with us now compared to in the olden days.
Glad you to see you enjoying your time there. I always saw your videos and posts somewhere and only now, I'm finally subscribing to your YT channel. Wish you good trips to where ever you go to after this.

Thank you so much Dale for visiting Jesus statue 🙏🙏🙏 this is actually my 1st time seeing foreign vlogger come to see the statue
Comparing to the one in Brazil, the statue's height in Brazil is 30m, while the one in Toraja is 28m - but along with the base that is around 32m - making the Toraja's as the tallest Jesus structure in the world 😁🙏
Actually, Indonesia has 5 Jesus Statues located in places that are predominantly Christian - 1 in Toraja, 2 in North Sulawesi, and 2 in Papua - while the Mother Mary Statue is in East Nusa Tenggara, since the majority there are Catholic
as a matter of fact - since you've also been to Lake Toba b4 - a new, and said to be the tallest Jesus Statue in the world (around 60m height) is now still on progress of construction, and hopefully will be finished in September this year
and if you come to Central Java, you'll find the largest Buddhist temple in the world, and 6th largest Hindu temple in the world, built in 10th century when the archipelago was predominantly Hindu and Buddha 🙏
Once again, thanks much for the vlog - love it ❤️❤️❤️

yes, it must have taken so much strength to actually give it all up and walk away, ignoring all the natural calls and people telling you how to live. I also think that this natural instinct is just useless and I try to ignore it all, find a wife or have many friends. I don't need any of that, no drama.
True happiness is being happy alone, needing little and doing what you enjoy.
You are God, you are the center of the universe and I can only bow before you, Dale :D
Of course, always enjoy good company and don't lose your sense of humor.

About "middle finger" in Indonesia especially in Village, children or even teenager don't know what's the meaning.. Some of them think it is a cool stuff to do when take a selfie (like peace fingers).. So that's why I think those bocil did "a finger" to you because they saw you hold a camera 🙌🏼

Hopefully I can visit Manado, if I have enough time. You can also find the Jesus Statue around Manado, you know.

This one's the best! The slow start to some hectic yet funny and wholesome encounters, especially the children, they're behaving like, CHILDREN! some are better than others, but again they're just "bocil". You're like that cool uncle who found his lost nieces and nephews in the market. And his face 01:04:10 😆. Looking forward to your next vlog, maybe a 2 hour one next? 👀
