In high school, I thought that going to a community college meant that you weren't smart enough to get into a good college. Now I see whoever went to a community college were probably more financially literate than a lot of the Ivy League graduates who had to take out massive loans.
@The Colour Green i got accepted to great schools for my bsn like penn state university and uni of miami but both would've resulted in horrifying amounts of loan debt even though they offered me bits of scholarship money.
Because Ivy leagues have such large endowment funds their average debt after graduation is only 10k. The US average is 32k. Ives are not the problem when it comes to student debt. Its large college with small endowment funds that are the problem.

The Colour Green what you said is completely accurate. An Ivy League education could end up costing some students less than tuition at some community colleges. But otherwise, OP’s comment is right on the money.
If someone will not have UG as the terminal degree, it is not a bad idea at all to go to smaller, cheaper school and saving up on the tuition and board expenses. Then, apply to really good graduate school with a star profile, which is so much easier done at a smaller school because most professors would support in any way they could any outstanding students at an average college. They key is knowing what you do with your time and money (time comes first).
The 38 yr old sounds like she ruined her life with all these loans and would go back and do everything differently, probably not even go to college.

SARLI you don’t get paid back for anything except maybe a meal plan and parking pass. University prices are the same for online or in-person learning so they feel no need to reimburse you. You also don’t get refunded for housing on campus even when all dorms close.

@@amycieloo I went to university for undergrad studies, worked there in a few short positions, and tutored some of the university students for several years after. I agree with Niko that it matters greatly what you major in. Yes, lots of people even in engineering and computer science don't get related jobs after graduation or get a much lower position than hoped. Gender studies students will 99%+ not use their degree to get good paying work. A computer science graduate will more than half the time get a related position and start a career in a computer software or IT-related field. That's where my fellow classmates from computer science went in the few years after graduation.
Or study abroad, europe is cheap and the unis are internationally recognized.
@@amycieloo it really is a question of the worth of the investment. Getting a couple thousand in student loans because you went to a school that was good for value and you earned scholarships, etc. is a good deal if you’re leaving with a degree in finance or engineering and you’ve gone to the career fairs. Then you can easily pay it back. If you go for gender studies the degree is worth nothing and so any debt is a loss. Don’t work at a loss when you have the choice to work at a massive gain.

Khanh Tran She said she didn’t understand the IMPACT the loan would have on her life. It’s an easy mistake to make and one which I can understand. 27 years ago, I graduated with 40k of law school debt which I consolidated to 20 years because I could not afford the repayment and ended up aggressively paying off in 11 years. I had no trouble finding jobs but it still required sacrifice. Also - Law is not as lucrative as many think, but you don’t know that while in law school. If I had it to do again I would have gone to law school at night (4 vs. 3 years) and worked to graduate with minimal debt.
@@ptt218 I agree with you, but it was her dream to be a lawyer. Most people won't say no when they apply and get into law schools. She will take any amount of loans if that's her dream to be a lawyer. She only regrets the loan cause she didn't like the career path she choose.

Exactly. And the reason she's making far less, not being a lawyer now, thereby not paying off her debt? She didn't like the job. When did we all get entitled to do a job that we like? How about doing the job that's most responsible, and not complaining about the consequences if you choose to be irresponsible.
This is why I’m glad I went to community college first right after high school. I went for 3 years then transfer to my dream school, but during that time I saved up for my other school and now I’m about to graduate this year in the spring with no student debt!! I would definitely recommend having students go to community college first and work hard to save up. You can have either have less of a student loan debt or no debt at all

Community college and dual enrollment classes in high school. Cannot stress that enough. Everyone told me I was “too smart” to be going to community college, but that is BS. I’m too smart to be paying $15,000 more per year

A year out from a PharmD degree, but I'll graduate with 160K in loans. ~15K paid by my blue collar parents. I'm lucky and thankful for them, because without their help financially I wouldn't have been able to do my undergrad curriculum. My fiance and I have plans to pay off my debt in 3 years after graduation. I think regardless of degree, you have to be realistic. So many students think they're going to be a doctor or lawyer, but they need to be honest with themselves!

My “dream schools” were private. So I never even applied. I then settled for a public school which I ended up not attending. My FAFSA application was flagged and my award amount changed. I lost all the pell grant money and got a bunch of loans instead. I just remembered crying that day and in less than an hour I made a drastic decision to withdraw and enroll myself in a community college. My main motivation to go to a four year university was to get out of a toxic home life which explains why I cried so much. It came down to being miserable at home for the next 2 years or be miserable for the rest of my life with all these loans. As an immigrant, it’s absolutely terrifying how education is a business exploiting young people. I’ve been reading some of Dave Ramsay’s books and it’s crazy to think that we are not financially literate.

Private schools give a lot of money. I graduated highschool with a 3.5gpa.and 27 act. I got 0$ from all public schools and about 30k from a private school that cost 40k to attend. The cheapest public school in my state is 15k a year.
Also that private school included room and board while the public school cost did not

I went to Ucla and took out over $45k in student loans to pay for it because I felt the pressure to go to such a great school even tho I didn’t know how I’d pay for it. After I graduated I wasn’t making much money and tried as best as I can to pay as little as they’d allow me (I went on interest only and then income based) and hoped eventually they’d be forgiven. By 28 I was fed up and didn’t want to just hope the government would bail me out. I discovered dave ramsey, followed the baby steps, had a better paying job by that time, budgeted, AND did ridesharing. After a lot of focus and sacrifice I paid off over $68k of student debt and credit cards in 3 years. Since 2018 I’ve been debt free!
congrats on repaying your debt. The pressure to go to an expensive school that may not be for you is real. We need to stop pressuring kids to go to expensive school and instead go to the school that's best for them.

I was nodding my head in agreement until she said that she’s hoping that within 10 years she’ll get it all forgiven? No, thats not the right way to think, you should be hoping that in 10 years you’ll have paid it off and moved on with your life.
145 thousand dollars paid of in 10 years is around 1.8 k per month if u include interest accrued during those 10 years. So when she says 145 in 10 what she will really pay is around 200 k. 1.8 k a month is near impossible for people to pay off. Unless their working upper level jobs that pay 70 - 80 k a year or they can live with their parents and not have to pay rent. Even with a 70-80 k salary it would still be super hard, you wouldn't be able to have a car payment or live anywhere nice.

I agree that she was completely ignorant and never even thought about paying off the loan. Hence why she says during the interview that she never made a single payment to her loans, which after 5 years she went from owing 117k to 145k in loans. And now she's hoping that after not making a single payment after all this time that she'll just have it all forgiven and not pay a single dollar. That's a straight up insult to everyone else that had to make their payments and become debt free

V King Well my plan is to land a 9-5 job and have whatever I make go straight to student loans. Right now I make just enough to scrape by doing freelance work so I don’t mind living like a broke college student for another year or two in order to become debt free.
I believe in you but student loans also depend on major and or the quality of work that is provided so most the time higher student loans are because it has a higher chance of getting you a very well payed job
Try side hustles, or passive income if you can. If you excel in some skill, I’m sure that you could put it to good use, and make money on the side.

Seth Kang it depends on the field you get into and how savvy you are in getting a job. I am in my last semester of a computer science masters degree and I'm already working full time as a software developer making $75K a year.
However, my undergrad was in biology, and it was impossible for me to find any meaningful work for a whole year after graduating. I was stuck underemployed at my same job for a long time. The only job I was qualified for without going into a medical profession was as a lab assistant, and those don't even get paid very well at hospitals. And most positions wanted work experience. I'm glad I made the switch.

I will never forget. In my senior year of high school, all the teachers were trying to push us all to go to University and said and I quote: “well nobody can really afford college. Just take our loans and think about it later.” 😟. I am so glad I did not take that advice. I feel bad for my former classmates who are drowning in debt now cause they didn’t research for themselves and blindly took that advice.
Yes! Same experience! and then I heard the same thing from the university and from the lenders. It’s a win-win, no risk, smart investment and you HAVE to have a degree - you’ll lever be anything without it! The degree (doesn’t matter which one or in what field) is SO valuable, loans will pay for themselves in 10 years! Don’t worry about how you’ll pay - just know that you WILL be able to pay because of how many doors this is going to open for you.
My college even promised a 99% job placement rate within 6 mos of graduation, making at least 20% over median wage in your first year, and if they needed to, they would make a job for you! That’s how many connections they had! 🙄
It was all such a scam. But it wasn’t at all obvious at the time since it was coming from all angles. Now everyone says “well you shoulda known better! You took out the money, now pay it back, sucker.” 😞

I remember all my friends thought I was just giving up when I said I was taking the year off after high school. I just chilled and partied and got my road map together. Joined the Air Force and got a job in HR. I literally sat at a desk for 4 years m-f. Never deployed worked maybe 1 Saturday. Got 4 years experience in HR. Got an associates then got out at 23. Transferred all my credits and now I’m about to finish my masters, with the 4 years experience with zero school debt. Not only did they pay for my school, they paid me to go to school so I didn’t even have to work, and I got max pell grants straight to my pocket so I would occasionally get 3’000 checks that I could just keep. Now I’m gettin ready to move to philly for work. I highly recommend that as a route for young adults. When you’re 18, people act like if you’re 24-25 in college that’s old lol. Than you turn 25 and realize you are just getting started. At 25, I have zero student loans, about 20k in savings and have a rental property. I’m tellin u guys. That 4 year investment I made to the Air Force saved me and made me THOUSANDS long term.

Patrick Carnevale Lmao, you,ve obviously never taken the time to really listen to him. Why do you think so many ppl recommend him? Because he shows people HOW to pay off all their debts. People that follow his advice pay off most of their debt within a handful of years meanwhile others take 10+ years to just pay off student loans. You think him just telling everyone to “pay off their loans” without much substance would result in millions of people getting out of debt?
If you want me to go into public 4-year universities, it will make Ramsey's plans look like an utter joke. Tuition being around 14-20k in-state. Same living costs, include all your rent (w/roommates), utilities, groceries, transportation and books into this: 12-15k (no frills included). Depending on the area you could spend more. An estimate of around 26-35k/year for university. 104-140k/4 years (if you graduate on time).
Now tell me what summer job will pay a 17, 18, 19 y/o 26-35k? $288.89 - 388.89/day, and say you work 11-hour shifts for 7 days a week for 3 months (highly unlikely at this point honestly). You would need to be paid $24.07/hr - $35.35. Minimum wage will be around 5.15 - 14/hr; so realistically you will need to find 2 jobs to actually pay this off. 7,416 - 20,160k/year per job assuming 30 hr a week and working all 12 months, but also remember higher wages are usually in areas with higher living costs. Maybe if you have a 6k grant thrown in it will be feasible for only the cheapest option. And of course I didn't factor in taxes yet ;)
In this case, you would need to have two 14/hr jobs at 40 hours a week for 12 months (full-time) to cover the lowest option of 26k with no additional grant assistance. Don't get me started on the 35k. 4 years are not accessible. That shouldn't be the case.
Anyways, that is what Dave Ramsey should do. Give plans. How to find the cheapest option. I can't believe I just wrote all that, but I am sick and tired of hearing all the Dave Ramsey dick riders on every youtube video about "student loans" that he is "THE BEST" or "In Jesus name I pray" kind of people (If you believe in that sort of thing that's probably how you ended up in debt, lol). All he tells people to do is pay their loans they took out. Simple, but there is no need to make a whole channel with that level of over-redundancy.
Pmoose Travern I never said his plans for paying for college is unrealistic, I agree that they largely are. All I said was that he doesn’t just “tell people to pay off their loans”. Your dad could tell you to pay off all your loans, but is he gonna provide you with a step-by-step plan on how to do it and provide access to a community of people that are doing the same exact thing? No, that’s what Dave does. To add, he doesn’t just tell people to pay them off, he tries to make sure they become literate and responsible with their personal finances. I feel like I did EVERYTHING right when it comes to college. I went to a public college that didn't charge that much, it was local, it had the degree I wanted, it was absolutely the best choice for me. I had in-state tuition, I had money saved up from my grandparents, and I had pretty substantial scholarships. I still left with $6000 worth of loans. I know it's not much, but I still had loans AFTER Scholarships and a college savings account that my grandparents had been putting money in since the day I was born. It feels impossible to avoid them.

Try to pay off more. The issue many experience, is they pay the minimum. Ex, if your min payment is $300/month try to pay $600 (300 will go to principal in addition to your original payment)

That sums up a good portion of BuzzFeed's complaining videos. I don't know why so many people go to university when it is so expensive. There are too many followers when everyone mindlessly does the same thing despite the huge cost. I'm happy I went but I had a strong interest in what I studied before going in. It sounds like these people went into university just to feel normal, hang out with their friends, or because them and their parents were naively sold on it leading to a great paying job even though the supply of university graduates was already saturating the labor market.

Online universities seem like a bad idea to me, given what hiring managers I think likely think about them. I don't believe that a degree guarantees you a job, but that the degree gives you aa chance that maybe you will be able to get a job with that degree, and some degrees have a better chance than other degrees with landing a job related to your major (example: nursing degrees generally produce a higher likelihood of finding a job related to your major than say, a degree in film or drama I am guessing)

Sometimes I really regret going to college. I wish I would have waited until I figured out what it is I really want to do. It's a joke to think 18 year olds know what they want to do for the rest of their lives or commit to something that will leave them thousands of dollars in debt.

Even though I got great grades and aced my sats and got into all my dream schools I decided against college. Now its been 10 years later, I have my own house, paid off cars and have enough cash to hold me down a year atleast. Best decision of my life. Unfortunately all my friends who went all the way are dying from the student loans. We have to teach kids that it's ok if they don't want to go to college and it's ok if they do, just have a plan. Unfortunately they don't teach financial information to an extent where these kids can plan better.

I agree with you 100%. Spending thousands of dollars on your education does not mean you will get a higher paying job. Sometimes, going to a school that costs less will help you get the same job. Not everyone who spends thousands of dollars in school will turn rich.
But isn’t that a breech or contract? College is sold as a way to massively improve your income. If you take out loans because of their ability to increase your future earning, but there’s no guarantee they actually will - shouldn’t you get to “return” your degree if it turns out to be a dud?
There’s no other industry that can sell a false bill of goods like this, and be GUARANTEED payment regardless of whether they actually deliver on their promises.

When I went to college, I never considered having to take out a loan. I am retired. Grew up in California. School is only good for all the teachers, not all the students. Trade school will return your investment.
I live in NYC and I had around 65k in student loan debt after grad school. I recently paid it all off, which was around 80k in 3.5 years. I was hired immediately after grad school, so I was able to have stable income right away. I am also extremely frugal. I live with my parents for $700/month, so I was able to save a few hundred every month had I lived alone or with a roommate. I don’t splurge on things I don’t need like manicures/pedicures, bags and shoes. I don’t eat out much, and even if I do, it’s usually under $20. I don’t smoke, drink alcohol and coffee, and do not own a car, so that helped a lot. I take the subway/bus, bike, or walk get to where I need to go (no Uber or cabs). I didn’t date either. I did travel somewhere once a year, whether it was Asia or somewhere in the US, but other than that, I aggressively paid off as much as I could paycheck to paycheck. My biggest hurdle was when I was let go from my job last year, and I was unemployed. I had lost my only source of income, and was probably depressed. I had enough savings to last 6 months, and luckily, I was able to take on a consulting job for even more money within 5 months. I worked hard and was able to transition into a full time position with a higher title and pays 60% more than my previous job. I ended up making more money in 2019 than I did in 2018 despite working 5 months less. As I am debt-free now, my lifestyle has not changed; I have no plans on spending money on things I do not need. I am now investing more into my 401k, finally opened a IRA account, considering investing in stocks when the market stabilizes a bit, and would like to buy my own home in a few years (or at least afford the down payment).

Nerdy Lolly Ivy League schools, no matter your income or tax bracket, will *always* be more expensive community colleges, state schools, public schools, any university or college that is not Ivy League. Also tuition does not change for low income students. Their financial aid does. Huge difference

Then, once I started grad school I was already working full time so I was able to save a bit and pay tuition as I went along. Living at home might help you cut down on some costs so that’s always something to consider!

My little sister is 18 and already knows she wants to be a surgeon for sure. Our uncle is a the Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon in hospital in Vietnam so she was able to have work experience and shadow the doctors there. She’s lucky she knew what’s she wants to be right out of high school
I tell kids who wanna get in the medical field try getting a job at a hospital or retirement home for something “simple” and work your way yup. A lot of hospitals and retirement homes have tuition reimbursement that can help or they have problems that’ll help you get certified in things.

Even my local state school was too expensive without the federal loans and I come from a typical middle class household, Scholarships are incredibly competitive and schools are way to expensive. I got 40k a year in scholarships and still have to take out the 5.5k. She seems like she has a plan in place and is trying her hardest. College is more competitive and more expensive than it ever has been. She is not screwing up her life, the schools and government and screwing us and we are trying our best. Please do not judge her when we do not know her situation. She seems to be sensible and educated, as is most of kids in college now. Dream schools are also not everything but going to a well respected school can help you in the future. Plus, it is important to remember that college is also about academics and experiences. This school may have just been a better fit for her. The dream school rhetoric may have been poor but still don't be rude when you don't know. To get into a school of the caliber she suggests, you have to be a very hard worker so I doubt she will end up poor. The issue isn't that she is making poor choices but that se (and most students) must choose between perfect finances or getting a good education. If you pay student loans correctly, it can boost your credit. If she is already paying $100 a month and is only taking out 5.5k, she will be in very good shape. We need to work on improving the education system not tearing down people for simply getting an education.

Don’t let pride talk you into debt. If you decide college is for you the trick is to do all your prerequisites at a community college, if not your whole undergrad degree. Don’t let loans be an option. Work while you go to school, look for scholarships/grants, do well in school and sometimes your school will give you academic scholarships. Don’t be discouraged when you realize it’s taking longer than normal for you to graduate because you have to take breaks in order to save enough money to pay for the next semester. Personally it took me twice as long to finish undergrad but I’m debt free and financially stable. 🙏🏽 Also, trade schools are a great option, so are straight up apprenticeships.
Trust me, paying as you go may seem hard, but it’s worth it.

This makes me so grateful to live in Australia. My university costs me about $9000 a year and you can get that all from the government. There is no interest charged and you only have to start paying it back once you have a job in which you earn over $55000. I simply cannot imagine having that much in student debt.

Watched my friends go to university and party every weekend. Went to community College, worked full time, and owed $2,400 after my bachelor's. My first year at my job made
I studied physics in Switzerland up the PhD (Dr. rer. nat.). I would estimate the total costs of my education at about 400'000 $ (120'000 for the Masters and 280'000 for the PhD).
I paid 3'500$ in fees the rest was paid by the tax payer. Today my taxes finance other students, just like I was financed back when.

How about: I didn't read the terms of the scholarship,, even though i was clearly educated enough to be accepted into a grad school and oh btw, i've already had an experience taking out $18K for my undergrad.'

student loans are a scam (ive got a ton) but these 2 spending 6 figures on grad school and then not even getting jobs that can make minimum payments is uh...questionable
I know people say you took out the loan so pay it and you shouldn’t get a break. But I can tell you from experience in my senior year of high school in NY. Everyone applied to private schools like NYU, Columbia, Fordham, PACE, and everyone was ok with the loans because we all were certain we would get a degree and make a lot of money. That’s what was constantly told to us growing up. To make a lot of money, you have to get a degree and the better the school, the better the career. We were 17 and it’s not even funny how misinformed we were. Unfortunately, our uneducated parents didn’t know either because they bought that story too. As an adult today, I can truly say that a 17 year old has no business agreeing to loans of that size. They had no clue what they were doing. None of us even owned a credit card with a $200 limit yet we were taking out loans for thousands of dollars. SMH. Thankfully I went to CUNY and paid most of my tuition out of pocket but so many of my friends are stuck with loans upward of $60k or more. Some only make $60k a year. The information out today was not available then. I didn’t even know what predatory lending was until after college. SMH

This video is so so so important! I am a college student and all I had to do to get a loan was send an email to the office at my school and it was in my account in 3 days. Make sure you guys know what you’re doing!!!
I’m honestly so grateful for having a family that can help me afford college. I go to a public university and I couldn’t be happier. I do have student loans, but there’s a huge difference between having a family supporting you a little bit financially and attending public uni or your local community college. We often fall in love with these private universities but I personally could never risk my sanity and financial stability just for a fancy school. My family always told me that it’s not the university that makes you outstanding, it is YOU and the opportunities that you take while doing your degree - no matter if you go to community college or Harvard.
Student loans in a nutshell:
Government: we need you to get good jobs but you have to pay yourself!
Schools: one textbook is a bajillion dollars!
Parents: start saving!
Student: applies for every scholarship ever.
We gotta add this to the HS for all students to talk about it
It should be mandatory that schools must first give students a total of how much they will owe when they are completed, and how long it will take to pay off
I decided to drop out of my first year college and started a trucking business. Now I make 123k a year and I have no debt. School is not mandatory for life
I also dropped out as well, started my crypto trading company and I have put in over $60k into digital currency with a 200% profit annually, what state are you from ?
Unless your studying to become a Nurse/ Doctor/ or Software engineer, then just avoid college and get marketable skills from work experience
Debt = Living a miserable life & being owned by someone else. They have to own you to make money. Its so evil.
Not if you actually did something useful with that debt. Do you expect to borrow money for free? I loaned money to start my business. Now I have a sustaining business in something that I enjoy. I am thankful to the bank that approved my loan. Without it my life would really be hell.
Foomanlol Not everyone can get a loan & yes people get loans all the time for school,houses, businesses but look at the reality now. Many businesses wont survive but the banks will definitely get a great bail out. Its just unfair & miserable to live a life of debt. 🙏🏼❤️

This makes me feel so much better about my loans. Going to do the debt snowball method and get them paid off within the next year or two, then never, ever choose get in debt again. Student loans are evil. Never again.
I am soo happy I skipped college. It’s all about hard work and moving up the ladder. I am 25, I was able to secure a career in Human Resources at 23 and managed to get promoted within a year, have very minimal debt (credit card), amazing credit score and ability to save a ton monthly.

Don't party, don't splurge, don't go to college unless it leads to a job, get rid of your landlord as quickly as you can, get a mortgage, do overtime until the debts you do have are paid off.
No one will save you, your parents won't be here forever, crying doesn't pay the debt.
Exactly. It's outrageous.. We all know this sort, they absolutely MUST go to the most pompous, pretentious overpriced school. Like home-girl and her 'dream school'.. Then stay at the nicest, freshly remodeled ON CAMPUS, overpriced dorms.. Hang out at the on-campus Starbucks, drinking overpriced lattes while clacking on her overpriced MacBook..
ALL paid for by these loans, so of course they get huge... But then they want US to pay for it, they want US to pay for their 4 year college party.

@@vandav3859 Why is anything so expensive? Inflation I guess (getting a LOT of it right now). I'd say the high cost of healthcare is much more concerning, as that is essential, life and death... Higher education is not.
There should be a healthcare debt forgiveness program, not student loan forgiveness.

Thank god i didn't go to college yet. I graduated 2017. Worked for 4 years in 4 different states (New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Alaska). Now 21, Joining the Navy and earning my BS degree in electrical engineering and computer science. Then using the GI bill for my Masters. Sounds like a good plan.

We don’t need loan education we need different systems. Knowing how loans work won’t give you a refund when you think you have a full ride and it gets taken away at semester
If you started school after 2010 you really have no excuse about not knowing about the dangers of these loans. There are so many videos, blogs and posts made from people who went. Personal responsibility has to come into play
