  • Today I will tell you about Greenwich Mean Time, the international time standard.
The time starts and ends from the line you are looking at.
This line is called Greenwich Prime meridian line.
All countries had different lines before this imaginary line was accepted internationally in 1851.
Currently, the Arab world has also proposed the use of Mecca Time.
I will first briefly talk about GMT. Then I will talk about Makkah time.
The Royal Observatory is located on a hill in London's Greenwich Park.
It was founded in 1675 by King Charles II. A monument will be seen here first.
It was gifted by the people of Canada in 1930. A clock will come into view just a little further.
The British remained the British. Still using the yard feet of that Mandhata era.
If you look at the clock, you will see that it has 24 hours. Earlier the clock used to be 24 hours, later it has been changed to 12 hours.
A ticketed entry will reveal a variety of telescopes and sundials. As it is a dolphin sundial.
Timing is determined by where the combined shadow of the two dolphins' tails falls.
A sundial is visible upon entering Greenwich Park.
The prime meridian line. The inventor of this imaginary line is Sir George Airy. He discovered it in 1851.
When people started trading with ships at sea, it became difficult for them to know their local time - from where the ships had left. Then Sir George Airy gave the idea of this imaginary line from which the start and end of time will be counted.
For countries east of this line four minutes should be added for each degree of longitudinal distance, and for countries, west of it should be subtracted.
Bangladesh is 90 degrees east, so add 6 hours to Greenwich time.
In 1884, 41 delegates from 25 countries met in Washington DC and adopted the Greenwich Prime Meridian as the reference for international time calculation. This imaginary line passes through 8 countries of the world.
As I said at the beginning, the Arab world has also proposed to adopt Mecca Time, like Greenwich Time. The proposal was made in April 2008 at a conference held in Doha, Qatar.
Titled "Mecca: the Centre of the Earth, Theory, and Practice".
But its progress is no longer visible.
That's it for today. See you again in another place, on another subject.
    Until then, stay well.
