Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Resin 3D Printer Station!

- Adam sets up a new machine in the cave: a Formlabs Form 3L that's his first workshop 3D printer! To get it up and running, he builds a cart for the printer to live on with storage and workspace for processing the resin prints that come out of his large formfactor machine. And after running his first test print, Adam reveals his plans for putting the Form 3L through it paces with a prop and costume project he's working on this Spring!

I love shop infrastructure builds, they give me ideas for my own shop
Cool build but just one suggestion, change out the casters with versions that can be height adjusted for leveling. Although most printers have leveling you still want your station as level as possible.
$11k printer billed as 'affordable'.

Is the difference is that Adam knows how to take over the world using a 3D resin printer?
Every now and then, Adam drops a random Aussie phrase (2:07 "The rest of the place is a bit of a shit fight") that shows just how closely he worked with the Australian production crew on Mythbusters all those years.
I wondered where that was from. It was too refined for just made up.
I've noticed it too over the years, every now and again an ausseism slides out.
I think there was a scottish accent in there somewhere in there too.

A few hours would probably not be enough!
Like the Louvre, you'd probably have to come back multiple times to take it all in...
Maybe a week or two depending on which part of the shop you start in.

There is a virtual tour scan they did when tested first launched that was live on google maps through a manhole somewhere in the neighborhood. Sadly it wasn’t very thorough but its still interesting to see what has changed. They should really do a new one with modern camera tech.

Welcome to the joy and heartbreak of 3D resin printing.
After i upgraded my CR-10 with linear slides, better stepper motors, board etc, i ditched my resin printer to a friend. It reminds me too much of the whole HP ink printer deal. Cheap machine, expensive ink ... and once you know the resin's composites, for no good reason too, i just can't be bothered to make it, it costs far less than the asking price, tho.
Most heartbreak is forgetting a support somewhere and having to reprint. 💔
@@aserta most consumer resin printers are not like that though you buy a bottle of what's on sale and dump it in. Professional ones are like a inkjet and silly.
I think Adam can afford it (and they'll likely send him whatever he needs whenever he needs it, as these videos are excellent exposure).
Aren't the fumes meant to be an issue? I'd defo want good ventilation and an air quality monitor if working long hours in close proximity to one.

One word of advice for new users: CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN! Be sure your resin is clean. You have a dirty, active shop with sawdust barely managed. I highly suggest that when you are not actively printing, that you either A. seal away unused resins and their trays or B. Keep your printer covered with a very well sealed cover.
If you have any debris floating in the resin, you can get nasty voids in your prints as well as un-cured spots that won't hold form well.
Can't wait to see what you do with it. I have been designing my own models since I can't seem to find models with the details I want or the models themselves.
I love that I grew up watching you on mythbusters, which was amazing. But these days we get to see you in this much more personal manner. Thank you for all the work you've done over the years, I certainly have loved not only your content but your approach to life.
I love the videos in which Adam says he's "Done" about 3 or 4 times, and then I look at the time on the video and realize there are still 30 mins left in the video... Always tinkering!!

I love how parts of the "Cave" are so full of supplies that it actually resembles an actual cave.
The Cave is not a mess. It is simply FULL. Full of all your treasures and projects. There doesn't appear to be likely you could "clean it up" without moving half of it into storage
My favourite part of any and indeed all One Day Builds is when Adam inevitably says “I think it’s done, yeah we’re done!” But there’s 22 minutes left in the video.
Your work shop makes me think of Warehouse 13 it's filled with endless wonder.

Surplus Medical equipment casters are my favs. Always so smooth and quiet on pretty much any surface.
Most people would start by printing something small like a key fob or token to make sure the machine is working correctly. Adam: What's the biggest thing I can print in this sucker?
I would totally watch a video of Adam's ancient fitted sheet folding secrets.

That metal cross beam right above the stairs to the loft that has a thick towel wrapped around it instantly tells such a recognizable story.
I just want to say thank you for keeping some sanity alive in the world right now. Also, I'm sure it is a massive inconvenience to have to do all the filming as well as building and talking about it to us yourself, but it does provide a unique bond with the viewer, I feel. It's just Adam and us, and we get your undivided attention (I'm sure some of it goes into what you're doing, but still.) Please consider doing occasional fireside builds on your own with the selfie-style filming even after this chapter of history is closed.

Love the tray concept/build. Horizontal space when you want it, but since it's hidden most of the time doesn't get crap piled on it...
all that space and stuff for one person - that is the most massive man cave i have ever laid eyes on - what a luxury to have
As an additive manufacturing entusiast that owns many 3d printers, I can't wait to see all the cool projects that Adam's going to come up with that are enhanced with the addition of printers to his shop. Plus an infrastructure upgrade video revolving around something I own myself? Perfect!
how do you handel the cleaning after on so big things? do you have a tub of ipa?
We time-lapse through the entire table build but we are treated to 5 minutes of Adam peeling off plastic. Lol😂
Also like 10 minutes of building a drawer.
From previous builds I think they tend to time lapse when Adan is listening to music. Don't want the DMCA take notices so just time lapse while he jams to whatever.
Yeah but the drawer didn't give him a free printer ;)

To whoever edits these videos: Absolutely love the real time audio against the time lapse footage. So much less annoying than the high pitch chipmunk sounds of sped up footage.
One of my favorite things about videos in the shop is playing "wheres waldo" with all of his props and tools. I just love looking at the shop

I once, many years ago, had the job of designing a trolley for a test oven. It had to fit through the door ways. I didn’t allow for the wheels and needless to say it didn’t fit. Ooops!
I just bought myself an Anycubic Resin printer. Much joy will be had working with it.
these formlab resin 3-D printers are insane.. being a big syfy guy and a machinist by trade its pretty awesome seeing this stuff become reality and its all so user friendly anyone can learn how to use them.. you could essentially train yourself to become an engineer with one of these

Great build Adam, just be careful with the resin. It can cause fairly serious allergic reactions, and it’s usually cumulative. Invest in some PPE!
Also ventilation, I have been printing in my living space for 2 years and just learned about VOCs. Was not in the marketing materials...
Watching him actually walk around his shop, i would describe and him walking around In his actual mind. All those projects where they can be seen.
I think we can all agree that we love watching you work and especially think.

I started being interested in resin printing like a month ago, and I love how 3D printers are getting more and more specialized and diverse.
Hey Adam. New printer looks great. As form2 user here's a few tips and tidbits.
1. Use locking castors or have way to lock wheels. You don't want printer to move when it is printing.
2. Can get very messy. Have near sink or water source if possible. Keep in warm temp environment and away from sawdust.
3. Be prepared to keep a work space available for iso tanks and uv cure lights. Also expect to have stock of plenty of paper towels and nitrile gloves.
4. When removing or loading items from inside printer use gloves. Use two sets of gloves - one for iso alchol post and one for handling printer. You don't want iso alcohol anywhere near or on printer itself as it will age machine faster.
5. You will need additional shelving for storing tanks, cartridges, cleaning, etc. Again try to store away from dusty environments. I keep mine in banker boxes for easier storage.
6. Don't throw out box. You might need it in case you need to do a return.
I remembered a channel for ADAM to watch. Ian Davis, and the mechanical hand he’s been building himself. The last show and tell reminded me of his channel!
Edu Puertas makes professional Hollywood class big budget motion picture quality armatures and mechanical skeletons. Y’all have got to check out his channel if you’re into mechanical stuff like that! It’s literally fucking insane the quality.
It`s just amazing, how much Adam has accomplished and how skilled he is, even that he is just 12 years old kid!
I kept waiting for the out of square cart to cause issues. Glad Form Labs anticipated this and it did not have to be remade/fixed.

Starting the video hoping you make a ventillation system. Got mine in a far away room and I can smell it through the whole house
Also, I highly recommend a big silicone dog placemat for the pullout table. Removing prints from the buildplate and washing them is a messy process, and the resin is toxic. Have lot's of nitrile gloves and use a respirator for VOCs.

Adam also forgets that he always orders a few spares... Those aren't casters meant to be used, they are casters that are held in reserve.
They’re like socks you throw the odd one away and then it’s brother shows up.

How do you rate your casters? Are they caster-rated?
Hey Adam, make sure you play around with part orientation next time. The printer is much slower in the z axis compared to x and y so orienting your piece to be wide and flat instead of tall and skinny can save you a ton of print time.
With SLA you never want to be TOO flat though as that can cause issues.
So happy for you!! CONGRATULATIONS on that first successful print!!

Not even a minute in and I'm already distracted by the arcade cabinet with a Freightliner logo.
Careful inspection of that section of the video leads me to believe that the arcade cabinet has another normal marquee that is just covered by a Freightliner logo that happens to be hanging in front of it.

As a metalworker, I've heated countless cans of soup with acetylene torches, warmed up my coffee on top of my propane forges. No need for a microwave in a metal shop.

Nice build! If my experience with resin printers is anything to go by you will drip resin on your cart no matter how careful you are. Uncured resin is not exactly nice stuff. For that reason the cart might do with some varnish on the top surface to make it easier to wipe down. Also gloves man. Photo resin is a powerful contact allergin they aren't messing around with the warning labels. The uncured resin is similar to Urushiol (poison ivy sap / lacquer) in that it's sensitive to UV light and will make your immune system go berserk.
So do solid resin statues or figures have these issues? Do I have to store them a certain way or wait to touch them. I know Resin dust can be dangerous too but not sure what that involves with solid statues
@@historyking9984 cured resin isn't a problem. It's just the liquid state you need to be very careful with.
Note with 3D printed resin objects. You should not touch them with bare skin directly after printing. There's a post print process. They need to be cleaned with a solution capable of breaking down liquid resin(usually isopropyl alcohol is commonly used). There's typically liquid resin still on the printed item.
Then you need to post cure the object to finalize the surface layer. Usually this is done under a UV lamp for several minutes or in direct sunlight.
After that it should be perfectly safe to handle.
I've been FDM printing for about 5 years. I want a resin printer because the smaller chinese ones are so cheap, but I'm still worried about the danger of uncured resin. I know, wear gloves, glasses and be careful, but that's like saying "well mercury is safe, so long as you don't touch it".
Keep it WELL ventilated too, that stuff will fume up a room really quickly. Wear your gloves, a decent mask (the printers usually come with at least one) and some sort of glasses, and you’ll be fine.
I agree that it pays to be more concerned with ventilation than touching resin. Gloves are easy and do a fine job of keeping your skin safe. The fumes, on the other hand, are unpleasant and spread quickly.

HUZZAHHH ADAM FINALLY HAS A WORKSHOP PRINTER!!!! Many of us in the 3d printing community are big fans of Adam but notice he doesnt 3d print. Guess its gonna change now haha.
I think he just enjoys the building process and the accomplishment of doing things by hand. I dont think he is averse to 3d printing, he had 3d printed parts on his HellBoy Glove, so he definitely has used 3d parts before

yes he should get like an ender 3 cr 10 or pursa etc but something for parts. i have no interest in resin printing bc i use mine as a mini lowes. need a bracket? 1 hr later by the time i need it its waiting upstairs
He was also sent this by the printer manufacturer as, essentially, an advert for their printer.

Formlabs is the best. I have one of their first models and it still works like a charm. Very easy to use and great customer support.
All the videos about Raptor Costume are missing. Some problem with the project???
Also don't forget to wear gloves when working with resin. That stuff can be very toxic before curing.
Well not like deadly toxic but you can develop an allergy to it. The more you touch it the more likely. And the allergy can even cause a reaction from the odor. Make sure you wear gloves and vent it well or have really good filters in it. I'm in the industry and many of our machines are photopolymer based.
I have heard that it's riskier "during" the curing because less is known about our reaction to the reaction (could not resist) or more specifically off-gasses of the reaction. I have been provided nothing to back up other than the logic if it's toxic before curing and not after what gets released during cure might be concentrated toxin and until California says it won't give cancer ill always want to air on the side of caution.

So cool to see the form 3 XL in action and your awesome stand. I work with the form 2 and have a couple of tips.
The resin cartridges can totally be removed safely after they are installed. The rubber valve at the bottom only is pinched open for filling.
Speaking of that valve. I have had a couple times where that valve has not flowed perfectly at the start, so I recommend pinching that to make sure it fully opens after you shake the cartridge.
Once again Adam shows his ultimate weakness: Following instructions and not rushing ahead.

I really like when you walk around the shop with the camera in your hand. We get to see all the cool things you have hanging from the rafters.
To late now, but you could have done a "wheelbarrow" thing with just 2 casters. Had the 2 legs with casters, and have 2 legs with rubber feet. No need for locker wheels. And you just lift the "feet" a bit to move it around.
I notice the table saw has the old dust collecting tube attached, so I wonder if this was the project that made him want to improve it

Also, have an Ender 3V2, which is currently being temperamental, so watching some making get done while I am troubleshooting problems is great.

I use the Form3 at work and I love that printer. We just ordered the 3L so I'm excited about that.
Thank you for making all these video about SLA resin printed on your channel. I didn't even know these printers were a thing until a few months ago, now I own one and it is a game changer. It's two steps away from being a Star Trek replicator.
From my experience, you need a very solid foundation for a 3d printer.
It should be fine for a resin printer since the only movement is the Z axis

Props to the editor(s) this episode, and all of these build videos throughout the lockdown. The development of the style throughout has been fascinating to see. I particularly enjoy the experimentation, and evolution, I’ve seen through the time lapse sequences. The mix of music and construction sounds over the drawer slide montage in this video was exceptionally well done.
