1966 Ford Galaxie 500 convertible restoration part 35 got the fender lined up

  • Got the fender and door adjusted perfectly! The door opens and closes like a new car. Bought a Harbor Freight portapower. It's one of those tools I wanted for years... more like decades. Finally got one. Had to exchange it tho, because the first one leaked all over the floor. Hoping to get the undercarriage cleaned and sanded to the axle this weekend. Next week I hope to be in paint mode. Why I wait for things to dry, I will go threw the power steering gear, wiper motor, and all that kind of stuff.

    When I painted my 65 I took off the hood, trunk, both fenders, the cowl and the stone guard. Painted those, then I had access to the door jambs so I didn't need to pull the doors. Looking good Howard!!!

      I need to repair some minor rust on the drivers door, and some minor surface rust off the bottom of the passenger door. I find it much easer just to pull the doors to do the work. Then I can paint the underside of the doors like new.

      When the neighbors drop by, I get nothing done, as we end up BS-ing for hours. I try to hand them sandpaper, and put them to work, but that never happens, for some odd reason..... I have awesome neighbors! I am so lucky.

      Yea, I really want to shoot the inner side of the fenders with body color, just like it came from the factory. This is the FIRST car I have restored that has NOT been undercoated. It makes for a much easer back to factory original restoration. If the inside of the fenders were undercoated, I doubt I would pull them off.

    Happy Thanksgiving! Since you are so far into tearing the front end apart, it would be good I think to go ahead and take the fenders off. You are only a few more bolts away from taking the radiator core support and inner fenders off while you are at it. I'm jealous, I had a '67 Galaxie that had holes in the frame near the torque boxes you could put your fist in. Whatever you decide, it's gonna turn out great!

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I looked at a fully loaded 67 Country Squire, before buying the Galaxie. It had the same common rusted out frame issues. They can be repaired, but its a ton of work, and the frame need to come out from under the body to weld it up properly.

    It is said there are three stages to any project: 1. "its going cost HOW much?"
    2. "as long as we're at it we might as well..."
    3. "I don't care how much it is; just finish it"

    Great videos > i know exactly what you mean, i started restoring my c2 corvette and went too far and now it's worth too much cash and kind of afraid to drive it too much >> when to stop is the question > now i'm looking for something else to restore , but this time, this one will be a driver .

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, thats why I don't do anymore frame off restorations. My brother has been trying to get me to pull the body off the frame. Thats just going to happen.

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That video of the lights is from the 80's. My dad had this huge VHS camera, you would perch over your shoulder, that probably weighed 25 plus pounds. He used it all the time, and took some video of that tree. The tree, I cut down from a coworkers front yard, and just staked it there and filled it with vintage C-9 lights. He wanted the tree gone, so I cut it down and took it. There were twelve, 25 bulb light sets in the tree. At 9 1/4 watts a bulb, yea it runs up the electric bill....

      I would love to know where you pull these number from.... I have a hobby account, it has a certain amount of money in it. When it runs out, the progress on the car will stop. SO far I am within my budget. I may go over, because of the chrome and top. Thats where the money I make off my videos may come to the rescue.

    Pull the fenders. With that being a metallic color, if you paint the fenders and doors on a different day with different ambient temps, would you be concerned that they would not perfectly match, due to the way the metallic flakes lay in the base coat? Air pressure, viscosity of material and ambient are all factors, or have I been out of it too long? Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, Howard.

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Painted hundreds of cars. Never had a miss-match from weather... only from when I needed more paint mixed, and they messed it up. I am not using base coat. I am going to use acrylic enamel. Over "long term", it will look and hold up better. The acrylic enamel on my Bel Air is over 37 years old and still looks great.

    I would like to cast my supporting vote for pulling those front fenders. Being this close, the added satisfaction of being able to paint them inside, and the backs of the inner fender wells, will make a lot of difference to your self-satisfaction. I KNOW it would for mine :-) Happy Thanksgiving Howard.
