      Hi Tom Love your teaching and your STYLE. It has helped me a lot. I agree that we should not rotate our hips first on the downswing. As for me on my DOWNSWING I like to THINK first, RIGHT side BEND with forward tilt and rotation. This happens in a split second. This allows the hips to move toward the target first and then rotation and of course I have had forward tilt from the begging of my backswing.

      Watched the video then hit the simulator, instant change to shot shape and distance, both positive. Granted I'm still new and have lots to learn, but this was a fantastic lesson and has helped me onto the next step (whatever that is!)

    Yes! I was told over and over again to rotate and “fire” the hips like Rory but rotating left too early struggling with path. Loving the crispy contact Tom! 🙏🏻

      Yep! Therein lies the missing link to that piece of misguided instruction. So welcome to "the dark side", where the spoils of "conventional" instruction - chronic inconsistency, physical pain, and endless frustration - yield to the fruits of body-friendly enjoyment of this great game for a lifetime. 😆
      Have fun out there building in the correct hip action, and keep it crispy!!

      My pleasure, David! I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated well with you. Premature hip spinout is an issue that afflicts many golfers, sending their downswing paths out and across the ball. I hope this helps you overcome your problem and crisp up your ball striking!!

    Excellent video Tom on not "firing the hips" to gain more distance! I am a victim of "firing my hips" on occasion and get a pulled left shot or a large fade! When I make a lateral move with my hips, which is most of the time, and as you suggest, the outcome is much better! Always look forward to your videos Tom! Keep up the good work!!!

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks John!!
      I'd say that the majority of golfers out there are victims of that premature hip spinout move. If folks can get those hips working properly in the downswing they will experience noticeable - and likely significant - improvements in ball striking!

    Tom, you always explain these things so clearly! I have been seeing multiple websites and videos about slowing the hips but never really understood the concept until you described it here. My private instructor would always tell me that I release my power (hands) too early and now I realize it’s because I’m firing my hips at the start of the downswing. Thanks a bunch for the help!

      I appreciate your kind words regarding my instruction content and teaching style, and I'm very glad to know that this lesson connected with you. Many misdiagnosed downswing and impact issues are actually a result of improper hip action at the transition. Get that right and everything just seems to fall into sequence as if on autopilot.
      I hope this lesson performs well for you!!

    Thanks Tom. This is the best tip ever and not complicated. Fire the hips is totally wrong. I was told by a college golfer to carry the club on a horizontal line until the club automatically forces you to turn. He didn't tell me anything about turning my hips at all. My swing was great until i was told by countless know it alls to fire the hips. That's when my swing went to crap. Up until then when i only worried about holding that lag position until my body automatically turned. I got all my weight early on that left side and i wasn't part of that shit show that came after with every one telling me to fire my hips

      Unfortunately, such sorcery from this dark underworld of golf instruction rarely finds its way to the mainstream because if too many folks found out about it the mainstream would then be rendered irrelevant....... 😎
      Consider that despite all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100. Epic failures within the realm of modern “conventional” instruction, perhaps??? So many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings - such as taking the club straight back, turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the arms, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, firing the hips, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of inconsistency and chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). I’m doing my best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness.
      Anyway, I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you and validated what you were doing previously, and I hope it helps you to recapture that old swing when you put it into practice!

    👍🏻 Awesome!
    For years I’ve been trying to “Fire the hips” (as many suggest) and trying to keep my upper body back
    … near impossible! 🙄
    As a result, I can hardly ever finish IN BALANCE 😡
    I can only dream of posing in a balanced finish like I see golfers do in TV.
    I am definitely going to try this in the X-Golf simulator this morning 👍🏻
    And you’re right, probably even more important with the Driver. My miss with the Driver is not a slice, it’s a push out to the right (a block), … probably because my hips are too far ahead of my arms, right?
    Thanks, Tom
    … you’re the best 👊🏻

      I'm glad this lesson resonated well with you, Parski, and I hope it does the trick for you! Just remember that the "firing" move is likely well-ingrained, so be patient in trying to implement this change.
      As for the driver, had to say without seeing the swing but it could be that you're getting stuck and that's forcing the path that is too much from the inside.
      Hopefully things will soon be thawing out up there so you can leave the sim behind for the real thing!

    I’ve had this problem, as many others I see on the range. This is very difficult to overcome. The “feel” that’s helped me, as we know “feel” isn’t totally “real”, is to try and keep my back to the target as long as possible, and swing inside out. I realize it’s all a sequence, but some of us have to exaggerate, over do it, to get to where we need to be, as you explain in your videos. I define the move you’re explaining as “spinning out”. To me it’s like taking off in a car. You don’t slam on the gas, or you’ll spin, and lose control. It’s a gradual acceleration to get more traction, as we all need in the golf swing…. To make any changes in the golf swing, we have to stop swinging so hard as well, or we’ll end up in the ditch, that would be the woods, in golf terms…..

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice comment and analogy, Ron! Indeed - for golfers have have deeply ingrained that hip spinout move at the start of the downswing this will take some incremental and exaggerated drilling to overcome. The "ghosts of swings past" do not vanish on their own, and this particular one can be quite stubborn.

    You’re the best Tom. Always making sense and always making the lesson relatable. I’ve been working on feeling as though my right shoulder pulls behind my head and before it completes my left hip bumps towards the target. This is the feeling; opposing pulling during the transition. The swing is shorter, snappier and I’m not spinning out causing me to come across the ball. I think the key is that the lateral move towards target should come sooner than most golfers think.

    watched your video on hand path and club path loved it
    the question i have is where should hand path between the ball and a your toe line
    i realize the distance between hand and club head will increase or decrease due to the length of the club
    but the hand path would be the same

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad that lesson resonated well with you, John!
      The only real variable - as you allude to - is the difference in length/lie angle from one club to the next. That certainly changes the "shaft plane", but since the hand position is the same for each club - even with the inside of the lead thigh from the face-on view and directly under the chin from a down-the-line perspective (with the exception of the driver, where we push the hands out an inch or so), we should not really "feel" any difference in the hand path between the various clubs.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you enjoyed it!
      I’m using JumboMax Ultralite grips in extra-large. I wanted to give them a try for a few reasons, including the fact that DeChambeau uses them and we share similar swing philosophies. Since then, I haven't looked back. These grips keep my hands much quieter - which I personally prefer. Also, since my fingers don't wrap all the way around and dig into my palms, I'm not triggering any forearm tension or activating arms muscles that may otherwise have a tendency to take control of the swing.
      The Jumbos are not necessarily for everyone - and my fingers are a bit longer than average - so I routinely tell folks to "try before you buy." However, having a properly sized grip is critically important as it is our only connection to the object that is going to deliver us blissful joy or deep anguish, yet it is perhaps also the most overlooked equipment fitting component in golf.

      For the time being I have phased out general in-person instruction so I can further dedicate my efforts in support of the online school. I will, however, continue the V1 Swing Video Analysis lessons as they are instrumental to the progress of my school's members, and these can be done for anyone from anywhere across the globe, school member or not. This enables me to put my eyes on your swing and offer some very specific observations and corrective action plans if applicable. The process involves downloading the free V1 app and then submitting two videos to me through the app - one down-the-line (captured from your stance line, not the target line) and the other face-on. You'll find more information about the V1 Analysis on this page of my website site: saguto.golf/p/lessons
      And here's a link if you are not already enrolled in the school and would like to know more about it: saguto.golf

    Hi Tom! New subscriber and love your videos. I have started to lose my swing over the past couple of years because I don't play 3 times a week like I used to and lost the feel for it. Now I'm looking for a swing I can trust and always count on anytime I play. Your videos make it seem so simple with less moving parts and can't wait to try them out the next time I can get on the range. With the thought of delaying the hips, would thinking about having the arms just fall from the top of the swing or keeping your back at the target as long as you can, rather than firing the hips, as your first move help with this swing change?

    • @SagutoGolf

      Hi Josh, and welcome aboard!!
      This body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance swing system is designed to provide a lifetime of enjoyment for all golfers, and since it is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology it does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everyone in between, inclusive of the best players in the world. As such it ought to serve your needs quite well!
      With regard to your question, yes - those options are fine if they happen to work better for you. I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible because we're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. This is one reason is why the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school is so effective, and why thousands of folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result (and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews). The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. My main swing thoughts are arms straight shoulder turn , spin tilt and hips back to address position when I hit the ball . I play crap golf if I don’t do one of those things and when I do all the other parts just take care of themselves and I flush the ball pretty much were I aim it
    All from your vids I’m nailing the ball play yesterday every drive was nailed down the fareway even put a 5 wood tee ball on the front of a short dog leg par 4 cut the corner felt the confidence to take the line

      Perhaps I’ll do another at some point, and if so I'll see if camera-shy dad wants to come along. My hesitancy is that vlogs take a considerable amount of time to film and then edit down to an acceptable length. Couple that with the fact that vlog viewership lags well behind the lesson videos, and that makes it somewhat difficult to justify the efforts and opportunity costs.

      Hello my name is Harrison
      I now dont fire my hips too early!
      We tried the stick in the belt loop which felt a little strange but after a few shots slowing the swing it felt good. What my Dad noticed was it helps me focus on downswing from the belt line and not from the top.
      Pretty good results from tonights session Tom, i did get a few funny looks from some members but one important thing is take the stick out before you go in a doorway👍

    Hi tom, quick question: is it helpful to try and synchronize the hip “turn” with the sensation of “punching” the ball with your trail hand so that both are done at the same moment?
    I’ve had success with the though of “delaying the hit” from one of your other videos

    • @SagutoGolf

      Hi Robbie,
      It's really a matter of what actions/sensations work best for you and from there to let your ball striking and shot shape be your guide. This is why I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. This is one reason why the comprehensive, structured, step-by-step learning platform of my online school is so effective, and why thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result (and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews ). The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness.

      Sadly, many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings of "conventional" instruction - such as turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the club, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). I’m doing my best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness.

    I KNEW this one was gonna be juicy in the first 10 seconds, or should I say “crispy.” I developed a nasty snap hook on my pursuit to get into that “dreamy” impact position everyone raves about. I love Rory’s swing and the more I try to duplicate it, the worse I get and the more problems I introduce. I Could never understand why I couldn’t get the club to shallow out behind me on my down swing and why my weight shift to the front foot was suddenly non existent. Now it all makes sense. I have rabid squirrel hips. This one was both juicy and crispy. Love it.

      I'm glad this lesson connected with you. And yes - while there are certainly helpful elements we can extract from our favorite Tour pro's swing, we ultimately must build a swing that works for us and which we can truly take ownership of. That's why I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. Can the slowdown of the hip turn be accomplished by trying to keep your right foot down until after impact?. I have tried that key before and had decent success with it..

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, Tom - the suppression of that trail foot release by keeping it planted can certainly help with this, as can rolling the trail foot inward and towards the target. This is supportive of the lateral targetward action of the hips, which acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep their upper torso square and their swing center intact without having to fight their body. It's also a very powerful move that you will notice with every great ball striker. (Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your finger, mouse pointer, or some other reference tool on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while the head - and thus the swing center - remains in place.) Most amateur golfers already have plenty of the rotational component; they need to build in the lateral hip slide to suppress the early-onset spinout that causes so many to get steep and across the line, or they get stuck, early extend, flip, etc.
      While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joseph,
      There's a lot of great information in that book, but there have also been many misinterpretations that have led numerous golfers - and their ball flight - astray. I do my best to take what Mr. Hogan conveys in the book as his "feels", apply it to the reality of what he actually did in his swing, and translate it into something we all can learn well from. For example, here is a lesson from the archives on what Mr. Hogan called "the most important part of the swing" - the starting of the downswing with the proper lower body action: th-cam.com/video/iejRWhuB7y8/w-d-xo.html
      Have a look at that lesson if you can, and marry it up with this most recent video. This will help you to avoid the premature spinout of the hips that afflicts so many golfers.

    Correct me if I am mistaken, but I believe you had another video lesson about slowing the downswing down a bit for better ball striking? Is that essentially at least part of what you are referring to here with the hips?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is on a separate topic, Ken, although slowing things down can help you to feel and build in this correct hip action. The lateral targetward action of the hips demonstrated here acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep his upper torso square without having to fight his body. Most amateur golfers already have plenty of the rotational component; they need to build in the lateral hip slide to suppress the early-onset spinout that causes so many to get steep and across the line.

    question: if you don't slide BACK with your hips on your backswing, why do you slide FORWARD on your downswing?
    isn't that forward slide causing your arc to realign and in turn adding in a timing variable into your swing? thanks.

      The lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep his/her upper torso square - and centered - without having to fight their body. Hi Gian,
      Without seeing your swing and/or knowing more about angle of attack, quality of contact (smash factor), path, shot shape, etc., it's not possible for me to diagnose your issue. There is a possibility that you have early extension in the downswing and have lost your stored up power potential by time the club reaches impact, but that is just a wild guess.

Your videos helped my ball striking a lot the last couple years but no matter what I try I can’t generate more club head speed. My angle of attack ranges from -4 to -7 with irons (it’s not super consistent except that it’s always negative), smash factor is good, 1.4-1.45 range with irons, path is very in to out-almost always +8 or above, and my shot shape is a draw, sometimes an overdraw.

      It will release through the zone, and it should be fully straightened shortly past impact. Here is a lesson specific to the trail arm: th-cam.com/video/ukwnUkpWxHM/w-d-xo.html

    Hey Tom-I’ve been noticing for awhile now that your grips are pretty thick. What is the reasons for the thicker than normal grips?
    Thanks

    • @SagutoGolf

      Hi Skip,
      I’m using JumboMax Ultralite grips in extra-large.

      Please check with me again as we get closer to summer, since at least for the time being I have phased out general in-person instruction so I can further dedicate my efforts in support of the online school.
      Thanks!

    Dying to try this!! It makes so much sense how everytime i try to "fire my hips" bad things happen. This is because I'm firing way too early.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you, and I hope it performs well when you put it into practice!
      Sadly, the "firing the hips" move is routinely either improperly conveyed or misinterpreted, and as a result far too many amateur golfers are afflicted with a premature spinout of the hips in the downswing - even as early as in the transition. We see it all the time with paths that are steep and/or routed across the ball from the outside, causing a host of poor impact conditions and undesirable shots. This lesson is intended to lead them out of this abyss of perpetual frustration and put them on a path towards the type of crispy ball striking they've not ever imagined possible. 💪💪

    I burst out laughing at "The GX7" comment. Also, I hit a new milestone in golf thanks to Tom Saguto. One of my golf buddies and I played a round at a trackman simulator. Thanks to Tom's instruction, I shot seven over par for the first time ever! However, we did have it set up to auto-putt - 12 feet within hole one putt, outside of 12 ft. two putts. So, stokes definitely gained on the green. The point is I was hitting my irons crispy KFC and rocking my driver. I split the atom with my driver. My friend was amazed. I sent him Tom's video dedicated to hitting the driver.

      @SagutoGolf  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's awesome, @Theophilus!!
      I'll grant that you likely did gain a few strokes with those 12'-and-in gimmes and no possibility of three-putts, but still - the ball striking says it all!!
      Thanks for sharing your improvement, keep up the great work, and hopefully you'll soon be able to get on the real grass and get your season underway!!
