My mom and I watched the movie together when I was a child, and loved it. Then I read the book and loved it even more. I see my grandma in Francie, as she was born in 1900 and was living in Brooklyn around the same time as this story was set in. It is my all time favorite book. Did you know that books were printed for American soldiers in WWII to boost their morale and sent to them for free? A tree Grows in Brooklyn was incredibly popular. More soldiers sent in fan mail to the writer, Betty Smith, than did civilians. Makes my heart hurt for those poor boys that were homesick. They had something to hold on to. This book brought them hope I guess. Thanks for your review. I am a new subscriber ❤
I love hearing your thoughts! It is a wonderful book, isn't it? I didn't know about it going overseas, it's a tender piece of history for sure. Welcome to the Club!
@@onemanbookclub2585 Thank you for your reply. I didn’t know about books being sent to our soldiers either. Have u ever seen “Band of Brothers”? There is a scene where one of the soldiers is reading “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” . I remember thinking “wait, what?” So I did some research and found out about the ASEs (Armed Services Editions) It’s fascinating to me to know that these boys loved this book as much as me. Maybe because I always thought that this book was kind of “girlie”. And that they were so big and brave. They just wanted to be home. This story took them there. Edit: They were INDEED brave. Bless their souls. 🥲
My first encounter with A Tree Grows In Brooklyn was in 8th grade my best friend ordered it from the school book club. She wasn’t really interested in it and I picked it up at her house and took it home and I never gave it back. That was 50 years ago and I still have it, along with the kindle version, audio cd version and audible audio version. I love this book.
Splendid review! I also inserted myself in the story and I saw the everyday monotony of life..the struggle of growing up, the pain of lack of money and her excitement in getting a job. All in all, great book!
I saw the 1945 film first (won a bunch of Oscars if i recall correctly) and years later i read the book. The film and book compliment each other so goddam well
I'm 56 and I thought I was well-read. I stumbled upon the 1956 film adaptation. Only after watching that did I learn this was originally a book. What a ride! Your video captures my experience with this book, as well. What a treasure!

I love that story!
She couldn’t have written this book had she not lived it. ❤

Awesome! I'll have to check it out!
*I'm re-reading this after many years--but as a book made of paper, cardboard and glue!*
❤️
