  • Another week of great questions from all of you. Remember, don't hesitate to ask a question in the comments of this episode, if you'd like me to feature them in an upcoming Wednesday Q & A. This week, we cover junk wax sets & cards, as well as vintage all star cards of all time greats like Mickey Mantle and Stan Musial. Are their gaps in value ever going to close, or will the base cards continue to hold a commanding premium? Only time will tell.

The junk wax still bring back such memories for me; I remember opening my first packs of 1986 & 1987 Topps (like you said, I wasn't able to afford the Fleer or Donruss lol) and how awesome that feeling was. And the 1984 Donruss Don Mattingly and 1986 Donruss Jose Canseco, I used to see those at the LCS in the glass case and would drool over them like Ralphie looking in the store window display at the Red Rider BB Gun. And I only own a few of my favorite childhood cards today, the 1986 Donruss Canseco, the 1989 Upper Deck Griffey Jr and the 1989 Fleer FF Billy Ripken

"Authentic - Altered" is one of my cheat-codes. I especially like when SGC specifies what is altered. I don't mind if someone was able to wash off a stain from the back. Or trimmed it to get it more "centered" or to sharpen an edge/corner. I go round and round on color added. What I really want to stay away from is cards that are "counterfeit." So I focus more on the "Authentic" part than the "Altered" part. And this way I get a card that is a REAL card and it looks really nice. I get why some/many collectors see this as a small step away from counterfeit. But for me and my budget it can come to my rescue.
The other cheat code I like is being willing to tolerate some paper loss on the back. It really knocks down the "grade" (and this is legitimate) but the front is gorgeous. And I'm pretty sure it is simply a card that was glued in a book.

I agree with the poster that said $250 for a table at a small show. I have paid $200 for a two day show and a 3 day show and I wont do that again. $100 for a one day show is my new limit. At that price , for me, its a fun day whether you make sales or not. I love 6 to 8 hours talking cards and seeing people getting excited for buying a card for their collection that I'm moving on from.

    • @ThePennysleever
      @ThePennysleever 15 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

Late to the party and just getting caught up, but are there really local shows with a $250 table? We do a lot of shows from 40 to 90 tables, and the fees are generally 50 to 100. Obviously the proposition is different for everyone, but you'd have to sell a lot to make a $250 table worthwhile.

Hey Graig! Question for next week. When trying to build a collection on a tight budget, should I go raw cards or low grade PSA (yes, prefer PSA over SGC)? To the viewers question where a table fee was $250 for a small show. Why is it $250??? That is crazy. Are they feeding him a 5 star lunch? lol. I’d recommend staying away… tables should not cost that much for a small show. It’s usually 40-150 per table and discount for more unless it’s a table at a huge show like Dallas

@@MidLifeCards Cali/nyc/Texas I can understand higher fees due to foot traffic. Small shows imo shouldn’t be anywhere near $250 unless there is some benefit. $250 is still crazy high…

Authentic cards are very interesting. The question asking authentic vs a 3 ? 99% of the time I’d say a 3. But in rare vintage a 3 may be unaffordable and the authentic is. Or, the card is so rare you are just happy to own it regardless of grade, and if it happens to be authentic, so be it.

I enjoyed all this week's questions! They were all right up my alley. The 89 Upper Deck Griffey is probably my favorite card of all time, definitely from the junk wax era at a minimum. I do love the Canseco though! It was such a huge card back then. The 87 Topps set is really high on my list of junk wax era sets. Our mindsets about Authentic Altered cards lines up pretty close also. I enjoyed it as always! Thanks, my friend!

I have always thought the 86 Topps Traded Will Clark is the best eye appeal card of the junk wax era along with the 87 Fleer Bo Jackson. My 3 favorite designs from the junk wax era are all three sets in 1987 (Topps, Donruss, Fleer)
Even though it is kind of goofy looking now, the 86 Donruss Canseco still gets my heart palpitating looking at it 😄

That 80s nostalgia is awesome! Questions for ya Graig. Have you ever been taken advantage of in a deal? In other words, maybe you were so young/etc., or you just didn't know something and that other person took advantage. Or perhaps a trade that ended up horrible for you in terms of value over time for whatever reason. Thanks for considering. Btw, I loved the live last night, looking forward to the March one!

    Graig…question for next week.
I have some signed baseballs by Hank Aaron, Ted Williams, Warren Spahn, Ken Griffey Jr, etc that I want to preserve.
I really like the Becket dome case for baseballs. I just think it preserves the ball the best, they really set the ball perfectly for eye appeal, and that clear dome over the ball is so nice for viewing and displaying.
Curious what your opinion is for preserving and displaying baseballs.
Also, if Beckett folds, does this great product become a burden since no longer an option?
    Thank you!

Hi Graig! First time commenting on TH-cam, I appreciate you and your channel so much! Question for you for next week: What advice do you have for folks who haven't had alot of experience with in person card shows and aren't terribly savvy at wheeling & dealing with dealers one on one? Are there aspects when you interact with a dealer that you would consider a red flag for someone you wouldnt want to start getting into negotiations with? As someone with some flavor of social anxiety, the thought of haggling and trying to "do the dance" so to speak, makes me want to crawl under a rock lol. But your card show videos look like so much fun and Id love to be able to work up the nerve to go to more myself. Happy collecting!

VERY interesting answers, and some great advice!
QUESTION: Would you rather have a favorite vintage RC in fairly high PSA grade, or autographed? Let’s assume value is not much different and out of the equation. Let’s also assume the auto card has great eye appeal and is slabbed and real as well. Also, let’s assume it’s a living person that can still sign, so we can take extreme rarity of the auto out of the equation. I know how your mind works, lol, so I’m just trying to narrow it down to brass tacks to where it is just a question of whether you would like to have the rookie card autographed, or in a nice PSA grade?

We have been observing a gradual devaluation of vintage cards of low level hall of famers and minor stars. I think most will agree that player relevance is a part of that. Modern athletes stories and athletic accomplishments are more thoroughly documented than ever before. I think that the increased documentation of sports and athletes could have an affect on how athletes of this era are remembered in the future. My question is do you think that the increased availability of highlights, game film and documented stories could help modern low level hall of famers and minor stars maintain relevance and or demand in the hobby over time? Thanks Greg, -Max
