I've had the pleasure of visiting both. The Buddhist Monastery was really special place to visit. I wonder if you went inside the hieroglyphic room of the Buddhist. They don't allow cameras but I didn't realize it at the time and did a pano of it. It was beautiful. Another must do is plan a trip to watch the sunrise on Alishan Mountain.. Its an overnight adventure because you would have to take a tour bus and stay the night (unless you drive or have someone take you which we had) then get up around 5 and take a train to the top. Not to worry if you think you'll be alone, the train was packed. Also take a coat it's going to be cold. After the sunrise you get the added fun of walking around looking at some of the oldest and tallest trees in the world. I'm talking a thousands yrs old! Its something I know from watching you two that you would really enjoy.
Come spring around Easter, if you're still there, you will see or better yet experience something truly special. Not sure what they call it, but I think it translate to the gathering of the Buddhas. Each area, town and some countries bring their Buddhas back to this one main Monastery where they will stay for a certain time. Its close to Chiayi. Do ask about it. Well continue your journey. I hope to be back there next fall.

We're definitely going to plan a trip to Alishan mountain, maybe for Chinese New Year. It might be too crowded though. Thanks for the tips!

Check out Wulai Hotsprings. Awesome. Also, another thing to check out maybe during the Spring time is Alishan to see the sunrise and "Sea of Clouds".
Those veggies are a type of a mountain fern. They are one of my favorites and are usually covered in a sweet mayonnaise (Japanese mayo).

Agree 100% on wulai! The hot springs are real mountain water and I stay at Rainbow Resort which is very reasonable and has legit spring water. Be careful as some resorts are just tap water!

Can someone explain why nearly everyone says "Taiwan is friendly"? How can it be friendly if no one there wants to be your friend? I asked many this and they are all stumped. Very weird. There is a total disinterest in making friends in Taiwan. It's the most antisocial country in Asia for sure, besides Korea and Hong Kong. The women and girls also have a very negative hateful vibe that makes you feel uncomfortable. Trying to socialize with them or chat them up feels awkward and inappropriate. Everything feels wrong and off. Kind of like Seattle, WA but much worse. It's hard to explain. You gotta go to Taiwan to know what I mean. But of course it's taboo to say this because Taiwan is all about being politically correct, not honest. So in that sense it's unfree, even though it's a democracy. Anyone else notice all this too?
Btw, the problem is NOT me. I am very open and social and down to earth and been to 14 countries and met thousands of people. I only have problems in super cliquish places like Taiwan and West Coast USA. Outside of the US and NE Asia, I have many friends and meeting people comes naturally, just like in the movies. Only in Taiwan and USA is it not, so the problem is NOT me.
Btw I would not recommend Taiwan for nature tourism, because there are too many insects that bite you if you go outdoors and try to hike, which is very annoying and distracting. Also most of the hiking trails are too steep up and down and strenuous on your knees. And the nature is nothing special. The national parks in the USA are far more spectacular without annoying insects and have a wide variety of trails, including flat level easy trails.
