It gives me a chuckle that christians don't know what shrieving your sins means. 😜 The hermit doesn't replace him, he hears the Mariner's cofession and absolves him of his sins.
    Here's the bullet points:
The mariner turns up at the wedding and starts telling his story to a guest.
The ship sailed south but got lost in fog. The albatross followed the ship.
The mariner, for his own reasons, superstition or malice, kills the albatross.
The crew chastise him for killing the bird, thinking it's a bird of good omen.
The fog breaks and the crew change their minds, praising the mariner for his crime, and become culpable.
The ship sails back to the north, but is becalmed. No rain, so no water to drink, no wind so no motion.
The boards shrink, the crew suffer, and they realise they are cursed so hang the albatross from the mariners neck.
The ship of death comes to them, and the spirits of death and life-in-death roll dice for the crew. The waters are filled with monstrous, ugly, scary things.
The crew are won by death, so they die but still move and crew the ship. The mariner is won by She-life-in-death and he can no longer die. He is doomed to live forever on the ship.
The mariner prays for the sea creatures, the ugly monstrous things... like the albatross. He prays, honestly, for their beauty, their wellbeing, and this real act of compassion for the creatures breaks the curse.
The ship, cursed to remain becalmed forever, now can move again, the dry weather that parched the crew breaks and the rain comes back.
The ship can travel again and takes the mariner home. Their job done, the dead crew's spirits are taken up to heaven/the afterlife and the mariner, still owned by She-life-in-death, is alone.
The pilot, pilot's son and the hermit row out to meet the ship. (To clarify... A pilot was a navigator who knew the waters around particular ports or sections of coast or river very well. When sailing into port a ship would often have a local 'pilot' come on board to bring the ship in, avoiding any hazards like sand bars, reefs or rocks. The hermit seems to be a priest figure... and a ship returning to port after being over due for so long would likely have dead men aboard who would need last rites).
The mariner leaves the boat and it sinks, he confesses to the hermit that hears his confession and gives absolution or forgiveness. However, the mariner still belongs to She-life-in-death and as such cannot die, so is driven, as penance, to wonder the land, telling his story as a warning not to disrespect nature or God's creation.
Which is why the wedding guest is now saddened but wiser and the Mariner is forced to go on and find others to tell. Forever.
I definately recommend the original poem by Coldridge. As an Atheist, I read it very much like a Halloween story, in an almost Lovecraftian mode. I imagine as religious people you would find certain parts more poignant. I DO find it interesting that, though clearly, heavily influenced by christian thinking, the poem and later song have characters like death and She-life-in-death in there... Not traditional christian figures. But that becomes more about the poem and analysing that rather than the song itself.
I must admit... This song is amazing to meditate to. To just relax and let the muscles unwind. Considering its macabre nature... still incredibly soothing.

An excellent and accurate summary of the Coleridge work. The only thing left unmentioned is the rime from the title, which is often misconstrued as an archaic spelling of 'rhyme,' which it is not, so much as it is a kind of frost.
As was pointed out here, the mariner is accursed to share his tale as he wanders, to make others who hear the tale "sadder and wiser" about how they respect nature. As the title suggests, due to his curse, the mariner is ancient, as in, very, very old. An old man, with an icy, white beard that goes with his age. Thus, the rime (or frost) of the mariner is his long, white, frosty looking beard.

As you’ve probably been told by now, “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” is an epic poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge which Steve Harris (the bassist) was a big fan of. They considered making a video/mini movie about the tale but it was going to be too expensive. The quiet bit in the middle of the song was when the cursed ship hit the doldrums and the sailors started to die of thirst.

Clarifications on what's going on in the poem:
Mariner sets out to sea with a 200-man crew. An albatross, which is a large sea-bird, obviously, follows the ship. In ancient times, this was a good omen, because birds know shit and know when shit's gonna go bad, so good bird = good voyage.
Unfortunately, the mariner kills the bird (explained in the poem as due to the bird landing on the ship and eating the crew's food. Of course, they weren't helping the situation by tossing it food to begin with), and the crew was like "Dude, that shit ain't right."
Meanwhile, a thick fog had settled in around the ship, making navigation difficult, which just so happened to break once the mariner killed the bird.
So the crew were like "Yay! The fog's gone, we can sail home! W00t! Apparently this was the one evil albatross in the whole world, and killing it was a good thing!"
That's where they justified the mariner's actions, and I think the poem mentions something about they danced with its corpse, I'd have to read it again. At any rate, instead of either cooking and eating the bird or laying it to rest all proper-like, they do some dumb shit.
As they continue sailing, they come to a dead spot in the sea - no wind, no waves, no rain. For days. Food's gone, water barrels are dry, literally up the creek without a paddle, because sailboats.
So then we get to the part of day after day, we stuck nor breath (of wind) nor motion (of the water). As idle as a ship in a painting, literally.
Surrounded by salt water, which dries out the planks of the ship, and is impossible to drink - water, water, everywhere, and not a drop to drink. Bajillions of gallons of water, and you can't drink it. They're fucked. In a really bad way.
So yeah, the rain had been withheld for days on end, as well as the wind.
Where the mariner messed up was in the fog - it was shielding them from the blazing sun all that time, even though it kinda did mess with their navigation. All they had to do was keep feeding the bird till they got to better waters, and safe harbor. When they got close enough to land, the bird would have flown to it, and they could have followed it, even through the fog.
It's a bit of a parallel of trusting in God to get you there, even if you can't see where you're going. You gotta have faith. Mariner didn't have faith, he had arrows, and he got his crew killed.
So he gets to go through survivor's guilt, as well as the guilt of knowing his actions directly resulted in their current situation.
So he repents, and prays (or offers praise) for the beauty of all God's critters, and learns his Life Lesson. The albatross falls into the water (he'd been wearing a dead, smelly bird for like 2 weeks or more), which is what they should've done with the dead bird to begin with.
And then it starts to rain. Buckets. Water barrels fill up, the boat isn't a dry-rotted hulk waiting for one good sneeze to fall apart, and there's now wet dead bodies on the deck.
However, he's still days away from home, or any port, so Good Spirits (Angels? I don't wanna say aliens, but...aliens?) come down and inhabit the rotting corpses of the crew so they can work the rigging and tote those bales and hoist that jib and stow the mizzenmast and batten down the hatches and such to get him at least in sight of home.
A good samaritan sees the troubled ship from shore and collects his own son and a local hermit (a crazy old coot who'd been through similar shit in his own life and was thus obligated to wander, looking for someone who had fucked up bigger than he had so they could take his place - it's a bit complicated) and they all row out together.
The rowboat pilot's son goes bat-shit crazy when he sees the mariner, somehow, from something. The sight of the whole scene, I guess, I dunno.
As soon as the mariner steps off his own boat and into the rowboat, his ship sinks "like lead". Like *slurp*: gone.
Meanwhile, the hermit says "Yea verily you have fucked up something fierce, and have repented, and are forgiven. Go now and teach by your own example." And then the hermit died in the boat (I think, can't recall. have to read it again).
So there's the rowboat pilot with his son who's now gone mental, a dead hermit, and a ragged mariner needing a lift back to shore who's telling the most fucked-up tale, but still the pilot's like "oh yeah? your son go bat-shit on you and a hermit die in your boat whilst giving a ragged-ass mariner a ride home too? No? Then STFU while I row my boat and think of a reason to not just tip us all into the drink. Have you even seen the cost of mental health care around here? No, you haven't, because there is no such thing as mental health care."
So apparently at some point in the mariner's post-traumatic travels, he happens upon a wedding, where 3 chaps are just waiting for things to get started - hanging out, passing a pipe, chugging the champagne, and the mariner stops one of them to tell his tale to this one guy in particular for whatever reason, and holds him up even after the music starts and the bridal procession passes. Which leaves him with one hell of a tale to tell as to why he missed the wedding procession, which the telling of most likely ruined everyone's day, so yeah, thanks for that, right? Nothing makes a special day even more memorable than a fucking tragedy. Thanks, Todd. Last wedding you get invited to.

"The metal community confuses me... I would never imagine them to make a thirteen minute bad-ass song to say take care of the animals!" -- so says Sori at 26'20'' Interestingly, metal has always been the most literate and philosophical of rock 'n rolls many sub-genres -- and nobody embodies that better than Maiden. The more you listen, the more amazed you become. But imagine hearing a track like this back in the 80s when you're still in elementary school -- it was like stepping through a doorway into another universe. To say it's not Wham! or Michael Jackson would be an understatement. And then imagine the look on your mother's face when she hears what you're listening to!

Bruce Dickinson't solo stuff is fantastic. How it's so little well known is an enigma. So many damn great songs. The whole Accident of Birth album just kicks ass. Or take Tears of the Dragon off Balls to Picasso, one of the best ballads ever. With violins that are at the edge of hearing them. So much damn good stuff.

Anyone that came up out of a struggle feels this, like why were you chosen, you were chosen for a purpose, if you know what I mean, so goal is spread what you know in life to push others to continue to want to learn. I just really relate to the mariner ❤

I got this album when it came out and this track was solely responsible for me being able to quote some classic poetry when put totally on the spot in an English Literature lesson at school LOL! I'd been hoping to see someone do a reaction to this but most seem to leave it alone due to the length. I'm still going through your vids, but I'd strongly recommend looking at some live performances by Iron Maiden, there's a real good reason why they've been so popular for almost 40 years. Maidens earlier albums all told epic sagas n stories. They took you on a journey.

please try "Infinite Dreams" or "The Clairvoyant".
so many epic songs by Maiden... always theatrical they make songs that tell stories, with despair, pain, drama like this and "Flight of Icarus". stories with dark threads & often moral messages. there are some filler songs but the majority all stand on their own.
you should also try some live versions, massive shows with great production. quality is usually improved. (harmonies being added since they ended up with 3 lead guitarists)

The mastery of classical literature, history, and ancient mythology on which much (maybe ALL) of Iron Maiden's material is founded is truly astounding.
I strongly suggest you read the original poem on which this is based.
Lyrically, it is brilliant, musically, it is stunning, and there really is no weakest link in their line-up, nor have I ever heard a bad song from them, although clearly, I like some more than others, as anyone does with even their favourite musicians, authors, or any other area of the arts which attracts them.
It's great to see the reaction of people coming to their music fresh, and learning to appreciate it's quality and complexity.

The synth guitars that they used on that album are magical and it's something that is not used today. It was a thing that they used in the eighties, but even then it was rarely used in metal. Those guitars make the album sound so much better. "Caught Somewhere In Time" is a masterpice when it comes to the guitars.
