  • This was lots of fun and way more successful than I had imagined. At what point do you consider an artist professional and why? What should I take on next?

I have gone through two sketch pads trying to utilize your technique. So far people who have viewed my drawings tell me that they look creepy. (And that’s kind of OK with me). I learned today that you do a lot more softening than what I have been doing. My drawings are so dark, and I think that is my challenge... seeing behind the blur. Thank you so much. I will continue to learn As long as you continue to post you videos.

I’ve done about 30 so far (I started with charcoal couple days ago) and have been getting the same responses lol. Mine were also very dark to begin with but i started using the kneadable eraser to bring more whites out i think its helping a bit

I use cheap paper and I make my own charcoal. The materials and tools you use should never be the reason you create great work :)

dude that's really impressive, it's not always the materials it's the skill.

Y'all I made a drawing by crushing burnt charcoal for BBQ. And it turned out good except that the charcoal dusted off.

That’s the tough part about not having compressed charcoal

It's all about practice......so true. I'm using what I've found at thrift and re-sale shops, plus old supplies from 20 years ago as I start my charcoal journey.

It's pronounced tort-tea-yon, accent on last syllable. Pretend you're saying tortilla with yon instead of an a. French

Ah did not know thanks! I usually use large blending stumps so I don't say the word often.

I just started doing charcoal drawings based on your videos about a month ago and the progress is unbelievable. I went from being unable to draw people or faces to drawing pretty decent cool looking charcoal and pencil portraits. Thanks for the inspiration!

If you have two drawings of equal artistic and technical merit and one is of an attractive subject and the other is of an unattractive subject, most people will think the attractive subject is a better drawing.

I sometimes teach an art class in a local community centre for those who have never tried to create art and I get asked the same question every time. I'm a firm believer that you don't have to spend a fortune on art supplies especially when you are just starting to experiment and learn. I provided them with a piece of 100 GSM rough paper, cheap willow charcoal and a putty eraser each and for a group of 25 it cost me around £8 ($9.91) and I proved that cheap equipment works just as well.

Dollar store art supplies for a kid who, “thinks” they would like to try art, would be perfect! Get them more supplies at an art supply store if they keep up with it.

I'm not an artist at all and I can't draw at all. But the way you paint, the way you go from light to dark and back again is very mesmerizing. Sometimes I try to repeat your lessons and I fail, really bad. But when people see my drawings, they say how cool it is))) but I know that what you do is really cool) Thank you very much for sharing your skills, it's worth a lot )

A creative artist can produce a beautiful painting using musterd, catsup, carrot juice and juice made from spinach and a feather for a brush. It's all in the mind of an artist. No need for expensive products. lol
