0:52 Glaciers didn't create them, they merely freed them from their host basalt and deposited them elsewhere. Lake Superior agates formed roughly 1.1 billion years ago from silica rich solutions that seeped into vesicles (air bubbles) in basalt volcanic rock (formed from gases trapped in the lava as it cooled).

Agate days highlight of every summer sinse I was a very small child, still go only now it's crazy busy. If you grew up on agates you can never leave them, as they say "we lick rocks" and once you start you can never stop. Even on certain types of concrete when there is embedded rocks we'll go "ope there's a nice agate, wish I could get it out." We even go on vacation to find agates, we recently went on a 3 day trip only to spend half of it picking for agates. Growing up an agate child you become an agate adult! Gotta love agates!

I often go fishing, and usually come home with .... rocks. Was told, "No rocks on the motorcycle!"
I did not ask if it counted that they were in my pocket, which I concede is technically on the motorcycle. 😎
Frankly, my friend has gotten with the program and started hauling nice rocks home for me. Lol

A lot of them aren’t visible, ie, they aren’t broken open. You need to know what you’re looking for.

Okay that would be the best day ever if they were to dump 3000.00$ worth of maybe agate gravel in my street. Omg I would be there till rocks were gone. I have a beach where I live called Pebble beach and it's just like that. Don't need a reason. Just go to the beach and get lost in a gravel bed for a whole day!!!! My kinda day!!!!
Happy hunting .. keep on keeping on!!!!!!

That is one theory about how agates were formed, but not a very good one (from glacier waters??). That is how they "moved" down to my happy agate hunting ground----Stearns County.

Just curious... how are agates formed? Always wondered. Sincere question… cuz I don't know the answer. 😊

@tonimj61 if I was to take a wild guess. Let's say you had some rock formations like the ones in AZ.(layers one layers. Well say you had a huge flooding and then a super freeze. Glacial formation on top there would movement and compression

Little information, terrible examples and specimens. Talks of eye agates, proceed to show different stone and no eyes. "100,000s of thousands of years ago, a glacier created these stones" they might be a bit older and were not created by the glaciers. The "lines" are called bands....

THE agate capital of the WORLD based on who? Minnesota? The US? Let's be honest. Lake Superior agates are pretty but they are not the greatest, prettiest or most awesome agates at all. Madagascar, Mexico , Brazil and Turkey produce some of the most beautiful agates on the planet..and the formation was over a billion years ago, not a few hundred thousand years.

Now I know how to pronounce the word if I'm ever in Minnesota: "AY-gut" (like the "A" in "hay") rather than "A-gut" (like the "A" in "cat").

"EYE agates aka orbicular agates are actually the tubules of the quartz filled lava where the agate was formed has been cleaved perpendicularly. The most spectacular orbicular agates are found in Madagascar and the Gobi desert in China NOT in Minnesota. Most of what is shown here are NOT eye agate. They just have shown the center of a fortification /Lake superior agate. IF A person does not know what they are talking about, and the interviewer has no clue either, you get a lot of MISINFORMATION like this. GLACIERS did not form agates, they moved them around. LSA were moved down as far as KS and Missouri by the LS glacier. THis was not hundreds of thousands of years ago. NOT EVEN. Agates esp LSA were formed over 2 Billion years ago. They were broken and relocated by glaciers. Hallelujah. WHERE'S THE TYLENOL.
