    John, you made me laugh out loud when you called yourself a "jammy swine", that is a real beauty! What a wonderful treasure to find. That makes up for having to deal with that rough walking plowed field. I also loved the coins you found. Well done John!!

    That bit at the 20:00 mark looks very much like an electrical lug. Wire goes in the round end, crimped and it gets attached via screw to something.

    Great day treasure hunting, John! The red stones found in your area are called Pyrope Garnets and Garnets. The stone on the wax stamp could be one of those.

    • @Tseringlhatso
      @Tseringlhatso ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree: many fob seals have carnelian intaglia, but that stone is too pink, it does look exactly like garnet. What a beautiful find.

    • @theRhinsRanger
      @theRhinsRanger ปีที่แล้ว

      There is also the lost field of agates (chalcedony family i think), i think possibly with ww1 & 2 it just fell out of importance, maybe the people that know keep it quiet. Like you say there are Garnets up that way, Ruby bay on the east coast.

    • @mishajameson8939
      @mishajameson8939 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carnelian tends to be more red-orange. I agree with the garnet guesses. Beautiful!

    19:40 An electric wire crimp terminal. Was there an electric fence nearby? The gold pendant- the weight end for a pocket watch in a stylised version of the owners lady love, in a hooped dress, to keep her (metaphorically) close to his heart. As the model has no actual head, the face could well be of she who presented the piece. I wear pocket watches now so am learning some of the history and symbology.

    So cool!! I wonder if the intaglio could be the head of Hermes? He was the gods’ messenger and was connected with speed and travelers, so it would make sense to have his likeness on a sealed envelope that was meant to travel speedily to its destination, right?
    You said it looked Roman, but the Victorians were pretty big on the Hellenistic aesthetic. I believe the period between 1830-1860 is actually called the Victorian Greek Revival, so it could fit! I think I may even see wings on the helmet 🧐

    At 3:24 on the electrical fitting, on the right hand end at the top, there is a faint, pale circular shape. Sometimes the contact point of a switch, for industrial electrical fittings, is a small circle of silver. There is one piece on either side of the switch, because of the greater electrical conduction of silver. VERY rarely, it is platinum or even a platinum and iridium alloy.

    What an incredible find... and funny that the mudlarkers 'kit and caboodle' found an intagglio (if that's what they're called?) on the video they put out today, they were talking about the history of them, there was some good information on them if you want to check it out. They said those are for wax seals ( the one they found was for ink (the design raised) made of bloodstone. Another great day, so pleased for you, well found !

    You're such a lucky guy!!! 👍 Maybe I should ask you to fill out a lottery ticket for me. 😂
    Hmm, the red stone in the cute gold charm/pendant... Probably wouldn't be bloodstone (also called Heliotrope), as that's green with just some red speckles. Carnelian is possible, but most often looks more like an orange-y/brownish red (at least the ones I have in my mineral collection do). I'd tend to think it could be garnet. Ruby is red, too, but in that color intensity probably too expensive. Garnet, however, was very often used in jewelry in the era you mentioned the pendant could be from. The mudlarkers also often find it in the Thames down in London. And the shade of red would fit as well. I have some tiny garnet pieces and they have that color. Whatever it is, it's a very beautiful find once again! 🤩

      Couldn’t agree more Don. Honestly some really bizarre finds turn up in the middle of nowhere. I suspect many items end up being discarded into rubbish in the 1700/1800/1900’s which was then spread on fields and then a mixture of farm worker losses and then casual losses whilst walking, hunting, horse riding and so on.
      Amazing !

By the way, you made me laugh out loud with 'Is it Excalibur?' 😆 And just a thought... it may be worth your while to get some acids for testing silver and gold, they're not very expensive and I find them easy to use. Brilliant work John! Yet again. Greek goddess Athena bust with the spear below by the look of it although you might be right - possibly Minerva/Roma. 100% a fob seal. Beautifully made and looks like it has a bit of weight too so very valuable.
    The sterling silver case has multiple hallmarks. CC of course, then three below it - the lion passant on the left (can't resolve if facing left), possibly the pre-1820 London crowned leopard mark, and another on right presumably date. Top right might be another crown and I can vaguely see scratched letters/numbers too near the hinge. On the outside of the case is definitely some kind of engraving in the middle. Needs a microscope I think to resolve any more. Awesome!

    The case is definitely silver imo- the grey chasing is a dead giveaway. As it's damaged, a bit of tinfoil misted with water held to it will generate vigorous bubbles of hydrogen sulphide and the smell of bad eggs. I'd be curious to see an impression of the intaglio in putty or blu tac. Incidentally, I wouldn't rule out Apollo as the image on the intaglio. I think he was associated with poetry and prophecy and seems to feature in impression pieces for letter writing going back centuries. Nice one John...you are indeed a lucky swine! :D
