That scratchy trip-hop beat and ethereal vocals are just so authentically 90s, love
It's a fantastic rehash, but it's not authentic. From the "VHS" filter switch in the beginning (why not do a proper VHS transfer), to the unnatural way that the vocals sit too far back in the mix (pop singers of the 90s were almost always pushed to the front of the mix, they were the commodity after all), it's all a good facsimile, but it's just that. There are too many nuances to any era that are impossible to authentically replicate.

The production on this is incredible. I was alive for 80s and 90s music on the radio and this hits all the perfect 90s vibes without feeling cheesy and manages to lay some 80s era vocals on top. It's like if you mashed Tears For Fears and a boy band with P. M. Dawn but it came out perfectly baked. Unbelievable work here.

yep! it takes the best parts of all those songs and artists, then tosses the stuff that made them cheesy and shitty out. dude perfected that whole sound and genre in a single song lol. song transports you instantly to like 97-98. when everything had that silver/blue tone lol definitely nailed the pm dawn vibes too, literal companion piece to die without you.
Damn, alot of music videos fail at the 90s vibe, but this feels so much more authentic. The aesethetics, the cinematography, editing. This nails early 90s euro-pop just like the song itself.
My grandma and I used to listen to his records together. Sadly she passed away in 2001 but I remember back when I was in third grade in 1998 hearing this song for the first time it brings back so many memories. Happy to have found it again here.

We used to listen to this in our Vauxhall Astra coming back from Exeter or Littlecote House or wherever it was that Fantazia had just torn the roof off. In the early morning light speeding down the well-built roads of the UK, everything felt like it was going to be okay. 30 years later, I'm a little older and no wiser, but I still hold onto that hope. Thank you for all the memories!
Black guy here, this song touched me. Don't know why I felt the need to mention my race. I guess because this song (and his music in general) speaks to 90's early 2000's generation. This music was made for us, we are the ones who can truly understand where this music is coming from. You had to be there to get it.
As someone who grew up in the 00’s, this whole vibe from George triggers some latent memories in my brain of TV I must’ve watched when I was a wee lad. Plus I was always into MTV and VH1 where they had whole shows dedicated to 90’s pop culture and music videos that I’d watch every morning before school. I agree with you, made for us!!!❤

This is your best work yet, George. I’m 36 and this honestly feels authentic to my childhood growing up in Europe. This track is not a pastiche, nor a simulacra, it feels real. Not sure how you did it, but fair play to you.
I think the key is simply being an actual fan of the style of music. The reason a lot of throw back songs can feel inauthentic is because the artist just wants a quick copy. "Oooh i want to make a Nirvana sounding song" is gonna come out different than a huge fan of the grunge scene wanting to make grunge revival for example.

I remember back in 93 this was playing in the background at a blockbuster (shows how old I am) and I loved it, so I asked the clerk what song it was. She told me it was one of her favs at the time, I couldn’t find it anywhere so she later just gave me her personal tape. Went on a few dates later to, it didn’t work out but it’s still a great memory. Sampled it in a vaporwave track too that I’ll release later
