LYRICS
I’m writing a book on how to stay conscious when you drown
And if the words float up to the surface
I’ll keep them down
This is the first time I know
I don’t want the crown
You can take it now
You promised the world and brought me it hanging from a string
Stuck in my mouth, into my throat
Told me to sing
That was the first time I knew
You can’t kill the king
And those who kiss the ring
Tell me how
It’s better when the sun goes down
We will never escape this town
I wasn’t scared when he caught me
Look what it taught me
Tell me how
It’s better if I make no sound
I will never escape these doubts
I wasn’t dead when they found me
Watch as they pull me down
I’m writing a chapter on what to do after they dig you up
On what to do after you grew to hate what you used to love
That was the first time I knew
They were out for blood
And they would have your guts
Tell me how
It’s better when the sun goes down
We will never escape this town
I wasn’t scared when he caught me
Look what it taught me
Tell me how
It’s better if I make no sound
I will never escape these doubts
I wasn’t dead when they found me
Watch as they pull me down
Watch as they pull me down
Watch as they pull me down
Pulling me down
Dead when they found me
Watch as they pull me down
Watch as they pull me down
Watch as they pull me down
Pulling me down
Dead when they found me
Watch as they pull me down
I’m writing a book on how to stay conscious when you drown
And if the words float up to the surface
I’ll keep them down
This is the first time I know
I don’t want the crown
You can take it now
You can take it now
Take it now

Robert Smith's voice hasn't changed a bit and I love this collaboration.
I need more of this collaboration.
Who's AWAKE in 2021?
Speaking of Robert Smith I heard that the cure has recorded two new albums it should be out this year or next year will see.
Closing my eyes during his Glastonbury 2019 set took me back two or three decades... what an incredible singer he still is and perfect for this collab - bliss (thanks to Chvrches as well obviously! ; )
So true! And Robert's harmonizing with Lauren during the chorus' is just so perfect. The word 'icon' is thrown about so easily these days but he truly is one.
Robert Smith, one of the best preserved voices in the musical landscape, crystal clear like in the 80's.
Speciale with siouxsie and the banshees in '83
For real! I saw him live in 2019 and it was as if no time had passed. Performed for 3 hours like it was 40 mins
Instantly recognizable. Perfect for this
He looks like Alice Cooper LOL
Couldn't agree more, saw the cure live a couple of years ago and every single song sounded JUST like the it did on record but better! Only concert ive been to where it felt like that.
This song exceeded the already massive expectations I had when I saw Robert Smith was featured. This is PERFECT...the production and the haunting vocals from Lauren + Robert of The Cure. Just yes, so many yeses.
how have you heard it? It hasn't premiered yet.
it's out on streaming
I found He said She said to be just ok but I really like this song a lot. I may have to consider getting this on vinyl for my 30th birthday in August.
The song premiered yesterday, the video today
@@Jaysin412 I know thst
I'm sure that having Robert Smith featuring on one of their album has to be one of the things they are the most proud about in their career.
And his too.
Oof yes
Working with Robert Smith and also scoring a game soundtrack for a Hideo Kojima project too. That's some going.
I mean how could it not be? & to have it be such a banger
It's the best kind. I remember hearing Chvrches in like 2014 because I had a Pandora playlist made from Dark Matter (who I heard from GTA V), I forgot about DM almost immediately (rediscovered later) and I listenwd to Chvrches for a solid while.
It's so cool to see new albums come out, as well as collabs, and video game soundtracks. I love seeing the success I know they deserve @@pixelfascination
Brilliant. Lauren and Robert Smith's voices are wonderful together.
*VERY GOOD!!!!!! - But it is SO WORST than this one* kkk

I just said the same to my friend when I sent her the video
It gives me hope that my fleeting fantasies of Lauren collaborating with Dirk Ivens may come to fruition.
I keep hitting the replay button
@Evan Lanning shut the hell up Evan💀Chvrches rule supreme...
Tf you going out of your way to hate man
It's not anyone's fault you don't enjoy life

I don’t think enough people appreciate what you just said. It is difficult and admirable to not just finding who you are, but following that path and sticking it out through all of the changes in one’s life, and the culture around them.
I’m glad someone appreciates Robert the way you do.
This is like '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s, '20s all in a sound. Kinda like the song that you'd listen to in the beginning of the millenium and think it's 20 years ahead of its time. Pure addiction.
So you've spoken the exact words from my mind!
70s
So 2000s!
@@lethewards I agree, this sounds so much like pop from 2000s and i just love it!
That's what I said
Cure was a culture, not only a band. They created songs that are immortal. Their formula is in here. That´s why this works so great.
shut up stu /pid - The name cure is actually more popular than their music - lol - and if it worked so great then why arent the views just as great - lol -
Smith is The Joker since the early 80s and still kicking
This song sucks balls which is why it only has 6.4 million views

Fair enough👍
I’m adoring this new darker CHVRCHES vibe, Science/Visions was always my favorite track on the debut album
YES. Science/Visions was so underrated, along with Night Sky, I think.
Science/Visions is my favourite CHVRCHES song, period.
A deep cut for sure!
Science/Visions is a straight banger, and Tether is awesome too!

The guitar tones alone in this song are such an obvious tribute to the fucking Legend of Robert Smith
absolutly
The whole thing is an obvious Cure tribute ... guitar yes, also the drum pattern, lyrics, everything pretty much. I think it's amazing.
True
Yes, that arrangements are very similar and I looove it.
especially the synths at 0:32 very 80s Cure
The way Robert Smith says “what you used to love” just tears me apart and soothes me so much at the same time. His voice is hauntingly beautiful as always. I’ve just discovered Chvrches and every song I hear is so resonating and gorgeous!
I've been obsessed with this damn song since it dropped
I didn't like it at first, now I can't get it out of my head
Me too
I'm with Anna, I didn't like it at first, but after listening to it again and actually listening to it and hearing the cure tribute the last minute or two of the song, and Robert ending it, I just love it now.

I felt in love at first sight
Robert Smith doing Robert Smith, and still relevant in six different decades.
A true artist. They don't make those anymore....
Ya, he’s pretty cool.
I absolutely love Robert Smith
The world needs Robert Smith more than ever.
Definitely ❤️
To depress us!? 😂
I’ve seen them 3 times and am a fan but my question is “why?”
Oh no, Barbra Streisand is back?
YASSSSS!!!! I was thinking that earlier! We all need The Cure!!!
We need an album full of Just Like Heavens, Mint Cars, Lovecats, Inbetween Days, Friday I'm in Loves, Doing the Unstucks, Close to Mes, type songs. Leave it to Robert Smith of all people to lift us up haha!
It’s over a year and a half later and I’m still awestruck at this collab. It’s seriously such a beautifully done song.
it's a beautiful thing when this happens..
Totally!
My sentiments exactly. My favourite ear worm.
It almost seems out of place, Robert Smith and Chvrches. But greatness recognizes greatness I guess.
@@nicholasstephens4310Ya know, I could see why one would think that. But in the end, they’re both alternative with fairly dark or somber lyrical content, so I really wasn’t much surprised when it worked the way it did, and MAN did it!!
Also, fully agreed about greatness.
As a Cure fan of over 35 years, I absolutely approve. What an incredibly beautiful and haunting song from top to bottom! Bravo everyone!!
I first heard The Cure in Paris in March 1987 when I was 13 (nearly 14), on a school French exchange trip....the era of "Why can't I be you?" and I've never looked back 34 years on... The Cure has been with me by my side all those years and always will be 💜 #thepowerofmusic
I concur 100%. This is frigging brilliant!
Totally agree. In today’s music it’s extremely rare when such brilliant music is happening. I just embrace it and I’m now buying every vinyl records from churches and the cure.
@Jeff B no. modern music is doomed already. But that one song is pretty refreshing.
@Jeff B You cannot be pretentious when your name is Robert Smith this guy has been around for 50 years and I can assure you this guy is not pretending. Now there are two sides of music the main stream and the alternative music. In this forum we are discussing a beautiful song from the main stream Bob music and we are embracing the fact that finally there is something good coming. We understand pop music most of the time is garbage that is true but this is a very beautiful song you don’t have to agree with us. If I want to listen to alternative all underground music I know where to look. And most of the time I listen to my own compositions now you can call me a pretentious.
Robert Smith is The Cure, and CHVRCHES knew how to revive his style (those guitarr effects), representing an entire generation that grew up with his music ... spreading to all those young people even without the need for social networks that did not exist in his time, you are Great
The outro to this song is the most gorgeous thing they've ever done. I can't believe how good this is.
Roberts voice introduction is magical
Robert Smiths voice still sound fucking amazing.
Oh my lord! Chvrches and Robert Smith together? This is just like heaven!
punny
I see what you did there
My favorite song 😍just like heaven
LOL nice one but i agree tho
When Robert Smith sang that second verse I just about melted!!!
To think, a wee lassie from Stirling, just down the road, would sing with the legend that is Robert Smith, and shine! I'm proud to be Scottish, because of people like you.
Cause they sold their souls.
@@Insp.CountMortisWinshipKlaw In what way?

@@sadukar_7th_legion I can see what she is doing especially with her hands and lyrics but it took 20 years of learning what this stuff really is. She was either born into it or was offered the chance for fame for a price.
@@Insp.CountMortisWinshipKlaw Sold her soul? She and the band worked up, they were not elevated in any way I can see, your comment makes no sense, with respect.
As someone who grew up in the 80’s listening to The Cure this makes me smile so much I can’t stand it. What a great song.
This song is so melancholic, it sounds like something is over forever...
yeah i was wondering what the feeling was. laurens voice is perfect for that, you can hear the emotion and melancholy in her voice
If you haven’t listened to The Cure, please give them a try. It’s like this, and it’s fantastic.
@@culbycove4963 you 're right the Cure' songs are melancholic ...but this song is the most melancholist...and i love it....
I agree 100%, especially the way the end of the song sounds, something about the music just has a certain vibe to it, all I can imagine when I hear it is someone slowly sinking in the ocean but not drowning
Its like an animal with a crippled leg who knows the hyena clan is soon to arrive.
This song is brand new but making me feel nostalgic somehow. I feel like i used to listen to this song a lot and i havent heard it in decades, but i actually just heard it for the first time?? And now im sad but like a good kind of sad if that makes any sense. This song makes me feel things, i love it. Excellent work.
The same here
It's the haunting voice of Robert Smith. It's familiar and new and comforting and sad. He just taps into everyone's soul.
Even the video has a feel for the 80s-in camera tricks, static, flickering video, and a singer with a microphone.
This song rings a bell, it resembles some other song which I totally can't recall.
Yes, this is exactly how I feel 🤯
This song and album deserved a Grammy nod. Not that those count for any type of notoriety anymore, but the band deserves it honestly.
You mean the scammies??
They are playing it live at the NME Awards this year!
The Grammys need new blood and controllers.,
To be fair, if any band had to compete against CHVRCHES or The Cure, it would be an awfully short awards show.
@@richardmaloney2648 i mean back in 2001 bloodflowers got nominated for a grammy and lost to radiohead....
The thing that blows me away is his voice has the same clear sound as it did nearly 40 years ago. No raspy or strained sound apparent. Vocals side by side sound the same to me, back then and now.
This song is so addictive.
I’ve listened to it 45 mins straight this morning.
2am when I thought I had seen everything for the night I find this and can't stop listening.
I have to hear it like 12 times a day to get my fix 🤣
I have the last minute of the song on repeat. Reminds me of both 2000s trance guitar and Akira Yamaoka's work on the Silent Hill OST.
yeah its an experience listening to
Very impressed with this song. You can hear the influence from Robert especially at the end. The end sounded like it could easily belong on the Disintegration album. I have been longing for a sound like this again.
You might also like the new Sneaker Pimps album (Squaring the circle). I love both, so maybe you too?

THIS
That ending reminds me to many songs of The Cure, that must be an idea of Robert, the long instrumental end, nice song
So true. Pleasantly surprised and nostalgically enjoyable at the same time. I love the instrumentals at the end.
It feels like it has finger prints on it does it? - but credit to the whole band for making it seem so natural and right. What a great song.
brilliant ending and reminds me of not only Cure songs, but tracks from the early 90s, maybe even 80s, that had the longer outro. I saw an interview where Robert Smith thought he might have been getting in the way with his vocals, I don't think he needs to worry about that, he did great job. Really good track and i'm sure it will do well.
I feel like the structure of this song has Robert’s fingerprints all over them.
totally agreed, the epic ending gothik guitar sound of the evergreen Cure
So I love this song, and I watched the interview with Chvrches and Robert Smith and I loved them both even more than I ever thought possible. Robert is all self deprecating, saying he didn't like his voice on the track. And Chvrches talking about their love for the Cure, and saying Disintegration and Pornography were their huge influences (my top 2 Cure Albums). Anyhoodle everything just all fell into place...why I loved Chvrches so much, why I eternally say The Cure is my all time favorite band. I have had the pleasure to have seen the Cure's Prayer Tour (in support of Disintegration), the Wish tour, and two ACL headlining gigs more recently. They just keep getting better and better. And Chvrches have a breathtaking live show, and I can't wait to see them grow and change over the years and support them at shows. They have healed a lot of my wounds and renewed my faith in modern music. This Chvrches song sounds like a Cure song through and through and this is a huge bright spot in a crappy past year or so.
I love the voice of both these Artists.
Great combination and lovely ambience ,dark ,rainy, cloudy.
Glad to see Mr Smith out n about doing his thing.

CHVRCHES, Robert Smith Thank you for the both of them. This is what I needed. Robert smith forever and CHRCHES.

I just died. The Cure kept me alive for most of my youth. Chvrches have been at the top of my list for 10 years. I’m sitting here crying. Thank you.
I love you.
I’m ashamed I thought this was the lead singer from the cure. Love love the cure still !!! Pictures of you ❤️
You were right!! It IS the leader- I was just commenting on how The Cure in general got my through my youth. I met Mr. Smith a few years back. They say “never meet your heroes” but he was absolutely lovely!!
Now to meet Chvrches 😎
I love you too!! 💜
@@shannonashton4247 Extended Version of Pictures of You...Simply the Best..Still love it after all these years...Turned sixty last month...music keeps you young...my boys put me on to the chvrches years ago
Lyrics
I'm writing a book on how to stay conscious when you drown
And if the words float up to the surface
I'll keep them down
This is the first time I know
I don't want the crown
You can take it now
You promised the world and brought me it hanging from a string
Stuck in my mouth, into my throat
Told me to sing
That was the first time I knew
You can't kill the king
And those who kiss the ring
Tell me how
It's better when the sun goes down
We will never escape this town
I wasn't scared when he caught me
Look what it taught me
Tell me how
It's better if I make no sound
I will never escape these doubts
I wasn't dead when they found me
Watch as they pull me down
I'm writing a chapter on what to do after they dig you up
On what to do after you grew to hate what you used to love
That was the first time I knew
They were out for blood
And they would have your guts
Tell me how
It's better when the sun goes down
We will never escape this town
I wasn't scared when he caught me
Look what it taught me
Tell me how
It's better if I make no sound
I will never escape these doubts
I wasn't dead when they found me
Watch as they pull me down
Watch as they pull me down
Watch as they pull me down
Pulling me down
Dead when they found me
Watch as they pull me down
Watch as they pull me down
Watch as they pull me down
Pulling me down
Dead when they found me
Watch as they pull me down
I'm writing a book on how to stay conscious when you drown
And if the words float up to the surface
I'll keep them down
This is the first time I know
I don't want the crown
You can take it now
You can take it now
Take it now

Thank you for putting these up. This song could only come from veterans. The feel blows me away every time.
I’m safe.
Those TOTALLY sound like Robert Smith lyrics I have to say ... If Lauren wrote them she nailed the song to pull in Bob to collab on. I mean honestly it sounds like a Cure tune all around.
i suoi occhi .....quegli occhi così belli ....profondi ..cosi espressivi ...o signore .
che bello che sei roberth .
This song is a hauntingly beautiful sound that will not leave my mind. I cannot stop listening ever since i first heard it. Thank you Lauren. You are such an artistic musician/ songwriter. And well! What can i say about Robert? The icon that he is keeps contributing to the musical history since forever it seems. I even shed tears hearing him sing these parts. So emotional.xx
Why do you only credit Lauren and Robert Smith? You do know others are in the band right?
@@syntheticgerbil It’s particularly asinine knowing How Not To Drown started as a demo by Martin Doherty, and was heavily influenced by his depression.
@@zecanard makes sense. I’m glad to know the history behind it. I see on the CD credits Robert Smith played guitar and bass on it; which is unusual for him as he usually just does the guest vocals. I guess he must have really liked the song. If Martin is a big Cure fan this must have been a big thing for him.
@@syntheticgerbil Well why don't you just write the review and sentiment for Deborah while you're at it?
@@deepfocus888 Defensive much? Just give credit where credit is due.
That chorus just sails, can't get enough of it. Robert Smith is just more gravy on this beautiful track.
This song was off to a really good start but got perfect once Robert came in.
I'm fully convinced his voice can complete any song.
Absolutely love the chorus and Robert Smith gives this tune a killer edge. Incredible !
Robert Smith...The Cure...Still relevant after all these years..Great Collaboration!!!
This song is a master piece. It's a dream come true seeing Chvrches and Robert Smith singing together. The video is awesome too. Greetings to all The Cure and Chvrches fans around the world.
This is not just a song collaboration; it's a historical moment. We just have the privilege to witness it.
🖤🖤🖤
Relax
Have you ever seen The Cure live ???
Fuck off you have not even met robert smith back stage like I have

Besides that, this is a stunning song, kudos to whoever directed this masterpiece of video clip, I'm not sure if it is even possible to reflect the mood of the song in a visual way better than it was done on this clip... Bravo!
I LOVE how it turns into a Cure song at the 3:51 mark.
I was thinking exactly the same, it could have been a Cure song for the next album!
YESSS, the lushness of the guitar. Straight up Cure.
Absolutely agree!
Well he did do the guitars on this one
This song blow my mind! I didn't know Chvrches... Now I need to listen all their discography!!!
You've been missing out! Great band! 👍
Same never heard of them ..Robert is the reason I'm here
Same , I've been stuck in my cure world , time to expand
This song sounds like tracks in the The Cure's "Bloodflowers" album.
Love this!
Chvrches and Cure should have happened ages ago! perfect match. Looking forward to this :)
My god! NIN Dead souls back beat, CHVRCHES and Robert Smith with some signature Cure guitar melodies....Feels like Heaven !!!
Playing this song over and over again. Its haunting how beautiful this song is.
I agree with you
Such amazing song! It has caught me too!!!!
Me too!
The same ! See my bass cover on my channel 😉
This is fantastic, Robert Smith sounds great, the song is catchy and poppy, his verse is just great...love it!
The emotion in the vocals of this song gives me chills
Damn. This song literally gave me goosebumps. It’s so good!!
Song is incredible. Lauren’s voice just gets better and better. Love this band.
I don't know why but towards the end when Robert finally says he doesn't want the crown you can take it,over and over again I start to loose it.. as someone who's gone thru so many mentally abusive relationships it just always hits me so hard and I cry. I love this song tho no matter what it's actual meaning is. It just sits dear to my heart
This is far from the normal musical genre I typically listen to, but her voice is so beautifully haunting that I can’t get enough. Amazing!
