Do you remember the construction of Rutland Water?

Do you, or someone you know, remember the creation of Rutland Water? Now a team of volunteers in the local area have got Lottery funding to create a documentary and digital archive featuring people's memories of the construction of the UK's largest reservoir more than 40 years ago. It was a huge engineering feat at the time, but it wasn't without controversy. Today it sees hundreds of thousands of visitors a year and is a vital part of the local tourist economy, as well as supplying a large part of our region with water and providing a thriving wildlife habitat.

I lived in Upper Hambleton in 1967, and became the representative for the RSPB in Rutland. At the time an reservoir was being planned at Empingham by the Anglian Water Authority. I attended many development meetings with AWA. At the time representing both the RSPB and the Oakham Angling Society of whom I was a member. There were many discussions involving the environment and its inhabitants.
It is therefore very satisfying to see that the Ospreys have returned, and that monster Pike are being caught.
During the early discussions the AWA considered that the reservoir should contain only trout, and the thought of monster Pike and resident Ospreys and could only be imagined.

My husband Eugene Reilly and my father Charles Shields both worked on the construction of Empingham Reservoir in 1973 the both drive RB cranes ,we lived on the site while they were working ,i remember it well and at the time the talk was about hiw to get arround the task of saving the church
