And here I was crossing after high and always at night. I was doing it wrong all this time. Each time was a near death experience but I just thought that was the way of the sea. Now that I know how to cross correctly, no more having my family join me in the kitchen for a potential last ever hug before I departed for a low tide night time bar crossing.
It says to cross in the 3 hours before high tide. But some places have diurnal tides (one tide cycle a day), and some semi-diurnal (2 cycles a day). Which tide pattern is the 3-hour rule for?

So how did the Orpheus get it wrong?
Why not cross a bar during low tide?
Because waves are larger, closer together and crest easily at low tide
