replacing fact checkers with community notes and saying it out loud is hilarious. going from checking facts to anything else means you are going to allow lies
@@MarcusAxel-p4r No. If lies algorithmically spread to people an order of magnitude more than the moderation/fact-check/rebuttal of the lie, then on net you've done almost nothing other than amplify a lie. I suppose that's free speech since the gov't isn't arresting anybody, but it's not "much better" and a really perverse way to run a democracy.
As opposed to obviously biased layman’s? Yeah that’s obviously superior, truth should be decided by those who can present evidence which fact checkers do
@@SkepticalJesusOfficial I do not use Twitter, so I am not familiar with how community notes work there, but if I understand correctly how the community notes will work (based on my own assumptions about how it logically should work), the community won't be able to remove content but can add notes, intended to add context or warnings against misleading (or potentially offensive) information, which will display prominently on the content if enough people upvote the notes. I consider this preferable to censorship by moderators for a few reasons: 1) There is less risk of preventing potentially socially valuable discussions from taking place. For example, it is easy to imagine that social media could be coerced into silencing discussions about Luigi Mangioni's case as "encouraging violence" if the oligarchs push back on it enough, or social media could be pressured to silence discussions about international conflicts if they are flagged as "misinformation" for the simple reason of going against approved propaganda for another example. I think the community notes won't entirely shut a discussion down. Users can use their own discretion whether to believe or ignore the community notes. 2) It is a more democratic approach. I put more trust in the public overall to be unbiased than I do with any smaller organization. 3) It opens up the options to allow more personalized censorship for users. For example, if the community notes are categorized by type, a user could choose whether they personally want to by default show/hide content flagged for particular reasons (ie., sexual content, violent content, potential financial scams, potential misinformation, hate speech, etc.). It puts more control into the hands of users to decide what they consider acceptable to view.
@@SkepticalJesusOfficial ^ My feedback in my last comment is based on assumptions about how community notes should work though and I am open to hearing how I might be wrong. Do you have any information about how the community notes will actually work in practice?
Trump has nearly everyone in media and related fields scared beyond comparison. They are bowing to him. Nearly all of them are bowing to him to curry favor and to not be on his bad list. I’m concerned and have my eyes and ears wide open to see what he does over the next several months and years. I think it can be very similar to Germany circa 1936. We shall see.
Nah you are wrong they aren’t scared. They now have excuses to be themselves, be truly expressive who they are, fear always had slight tinged of defiance but only a fraction who did, most if not all felt relieved.
"Fact-checkers have been too politically biased." Oh, because they called out Israel? When did Zuckerberg start this guru look? I saw coverage of this on another channel, and one of the presenters, describing himself as a "watch nerd", said that Z is wearing here a $900,000 watch, made by Greubel Forsey. That's obscene.
No they are politically biased because we did our own fact checking on these fact checkers, I work at FB as a data scientist. It was pretty clear their political affiliations, the content they were marking as false claims and the content they were letting slide.
It's a bit sad and scary to really start to know that the 1984 threshold was passed with big tech probably 5-10 years ago. You only start to appreciate it with hindsight. I don't know how you guys do this and stay well. Thank you so much.
Sam mentions the Democrat failure to deliver their message, immediately after detailing the right wing dominance of all forms of media, but doesn't seem to complete the thought. How do you deliver a message effectively across a broad swath of the population when the vast majority of media outlets are so strongly skewed against you.
I also think you need to add to this equation that maintaining a moral compass is a bridge too far; they see the proof that there is a huuuuugggggeeeee reward for incorrigible behavior.
You know what it boils down to? Americans have to decide that they want better and demand it. Do the hard things, make the hard choices. The truth will disseminate when we have learned to respect it collectively. What will that take? Welp, I won’t be holding my breath, but there are a lot of you I am thankful for.
It's impossible for one person to hoard resources from millions of people, unless they're a psychopath. We award the very worse of society with extra money. Tf
Facebook literally started as a way for college students to rate other students on attractiveness, which got Zuckerberg in trouble at Harvard, so he turned it into a social media platform instead... the whole thing was cursed from day one.
Just a note for fact-checking: Meta/MAGA as well as Twitter and Google have let a lot of employees go in the past year or so, but these folks have not simply been replaced with AI software or a mysterious algorithm. Much of what is referred to as "AI" is actually under-payed and overworked people in several countries of Africa as well as a couple of states of India. These workers are expected to make a decision about a video or reel or post in a matter of seconds. That time constraint, along with cultural differences perhaps or other considerations about knowledge of specific references, is part of the explanation for mischaracterizations. Pluto Press and PM Press have a couple of good books on this and I'm sure there's ample information online. Regardless, good episode!
Meta and X are vulnerable right now due to their spending on AI. If everyone starts deleting their accounts they are screwed. AI isn’t generating enough revenue to offset the amount they are spending and if people stop visiting the platform their stock will tank.
I work at one of those, go ahead, do it, I dare, I double dare you! You or even a few millions deleting their accounts wouldn't make much of a dent. You think we are running these multi billion dollar empires just willy nilly and don't take these scenarios into consideration? 3.29 billion users across platforms, a couple million users is within the margin of error.
Thank you for taking the time to educate your viewers. It's exhausting being lied to and talked down to when you are just trying to learn about what is happening around you, so thank you for being honest and professional.
I've seen the new policy in action today- When a right winger posts a piece of bullshit and starts getting flamed for it, Facebook automatically turns off comments.
Terrorism could cover a whole host of topics. It probably wouldn't be limited to Gaza and the West Bank. It may include frustrations with our our healthcare system; anti-billionaire and anti-oligarchy statements; anti-Trump; anti-annexation with concerns to Panama, Greenland, and Canada; and more. This may seem hyperbolic, but with the way this country is going, I just dont know anymore how "terrorism" will be defined by these people.
It's time to aggressively boycott the billionaire oligarchs ... don't buy their products (yes, it might be difficult), don't invest in their companies, don't support them in any possible way. Instead, support those who support democracy and the people (those still subject to the rules of law).
Social media should be required to perform KYC, no minors should be allowed, and disinformation is not free speech it's anti-speech and undermines freedom.

Because basing one's entire politics around being anti-trump 2017-style simply isn't going to work anymore. Future resistance will require a bigger tent, focus on kitchen table issues, a broader populist movement on the left, greater cooperation, and better messaging beyond just making fun of Trump.
@@ILaunchNukes This. Also by better messaging, dumbing things down. You can't give a 12 pt statement on why something works. "THEY ARE EATING THE PETS" was effective enough to pull some folks off. Keep a broader message for the politically aware and absolutely dumb it down and fire off the simple messages for 4 straight years. There has to be a pipeline of information much like the right has from social media to podcasters. Putting out great messaging means nothing if the people are more entertained by pothead radio.

The reason why Zuckerberg has changed his hair as he is obsessed with becoming a modern day Octavian. The adopted son of Julius Caesar. Octavian, also known as Augustus put the nail in the coffin for the Roman Republic becoming dictator for life. Since it was the custom in some ancient nations for the rulers to be worshiped as gods, he declared that Julius Caesar was a God and by extension, Augustus declared himself the son of God. He died in the year 14 CE/AD. So if there was a historical Jesus, he would have been about nine years old at the time. What I’ve noticed is people who are into politics, tend to ignore culture, religion, and the lifestyles of the opposition. The conservative tech Bros have so much money every fantasy can be indulged in.
Some capitalists make the pivot to fascists easier than others. You can tell it's right up his alley and he's been wanting to walk up it a long time. Plus it may hold less accountability and more profits.
I mean honestly all Meta platforms have been becoming more and more right wing. All he’s doing is catering to his audience. He’s saying that the third party fact checkers were “biased”. What he really meant was the right wing has more of a propensity to spread misinformation and didn’t appreciate being called out on it.
Maximum political contribution. Illegal lobbying, see other countries like England and Canada. Mark, I'm not sure what look he was going for, not made if money.
One one hand they say those that consumed political news content voted Dem... and on the other are decrying the move to allow political news content... Pick a damn position.
He's been in personal contact with Putin since he purchased twitter, and he's supported Trump publicly since after 2020 election. That he finally became a fixture of the campaign and donated money is the finish line my friend, not the start.
I have no idea how can Sam say that Musk wasn't out to buy a president in the first place. Before Trump took the throne with Musk's full-throated support, the top challengers for the Republican nomination were first DeSantis and then Ramaswamy, both of whom he heavily hosted on Twitter. Clearly he was ready to buy out whomever would get the nomination. The suggestion that there is a single major politician in the GOP that would not sell out to Musk has top joke of 2025 potential and we are barely in January.
I mean, what else is he supposed to do? Elon Musk is too close to Trump and Musk has a vendetta against Zuckerberg. Either he steps down or shows his belly. Otherwise he risks Elon convincing Trump to target him and Facebook.
no kid, itmeans what he said it means, you are speaking for him. which you cant but thanks for your point of vieuw;) good to know how little you know .

This might make me look dumb as hell which is fair But how the hell do you make money by being on Facebook? I thought Facebook makes money by selling our information to advertisers. But Sam clearly said his revenue from Facebook. Am I missing something?
Advertising. They don't just sell information, people pay to advertise to users. Ads get shown alongside content, content creators get a small cut of that ad money for keeping users on the website.
this perfectly illustrated why i can't stand the anti AI crowd. because they hate ME just for using the thing rather then ELON for being just in general a terrible person.
Well, that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. You’re on a social platform right now talking into your microphone doing your majority report. You are on social media and don’t you do a podcast too. Don’t pay attention. What a liar like out front you’re telling everybody you don’t pay attention to them when you’re on one makes no sense.
i was never a fan of zuckerberg, but i am a big fan of open source frontier level AI models. Meta's given the open source community seriously powerful resources over the last couple of years with the Llama models, directly countering openAI and the US govts stance on this.. basically doing what Alibaba and other chinese research groups are doing. I can see a bunch of self serving reasons for continued moves like this, but when it comes down to it hes giving serious power to the people with these models, and contradicting US govt fear mongering on open source LLMs etc
After seeing trump congratulate him and hearing that he threatened to jail Zuckerberg for election stuff last time, this is feeling more like caving under pressure n threats
On the other hand, you have to realize that having a centralized authority, whether that’s a government agency or a team of moderators, determining what is fact or not does pose a threat to freedom of expression. Like it or not, what is politically correct is not necessarily what is objectively true. We need to allow even unpleasant discussions in public so that the public can form their own informed opinions without being hindered by censorship. One good thing about the internet is that people have the freedom to choose whether they engage in a discussion, and can walk away from their screen at any time if they don’t want to participate. Freedom of expression should be reinforced for the ways that people communicate in the modern world. Even if you question the motives of the oligarchs on this issue, what they claim to be standing for in this case is actually good at least on the surface.
Utter rubbish of course. You only have to look to twitter as an example of how this light touch approach to moderation pans out. Your comment about political correctness tells us everything we need to know about your dorky scatter brained world view
no one saying this when conservatives where getting banned and de platformed but once democrats start dealing with what republicans had to deal with they cry. trump won the popular vote. get over it 😂
oh you sweet summer child… Multi billionaires are stealing this country, spending your tax money on vacations and you don’t even care. Its like they made you eat a shxt sandwich and your reply was “please sir may I have another”
Because conservatives being banned were being unbelievably hateful towards others, spreading outright false information, and threatening to harm others. You can just outright say Nazi rhetoric on Twitter and Elon will share it. If you can't see the glaring difference between the two situations, that's really quite sad. Especially when Sam outlined it quite well in the video. You just came here to "own the libs" and you couldn't even do that.
Dude you guys were crying and praying outside the polling places on election night 2020 and then stormed the Capital when you didn't get your way. Then you pretended you didn't and called yourselves tourists and peaceful protesters. You first.

Free speech means allowing lies, community moderating calls out the lies. It's much better than trying to fact check billions of posts.

Replacing fact-checkers with community notes is just truth by popularity
You prefer truth to be decided by a group of potentially biased moderators?
@@_Painted Why would you assume they're biased? They would be trained to moderate in fairness.
I consider this preferable to censorship by moderators for a few reasons:
1) There is less risk of preventing potentially socially valuable discussions from taking place.
They are not scared of him 😂 they brought him 💀
I don’t think Elon’s scared of him.

Yes. Maga is weak, dumb and selfish. Humanity is in for it.
The only thing I can say here is Trump is nowhere near as convincing. He is such a liar people would even fact check him saying gravity is real😂
Imagine what a normal family would spend that much money on.
Lol the long list of things that I don't like about the zuck makes his 9k watch not even a thing for me.
No they are politically biased because we did our own fact checking on these fact checkers, I work at FB as a data scientist. It was pretty clear their political affiliations, the content they were marking as false claims and the content they were letting slide.

He downloaded a new skin but he still can't hide the uncanny robot voice and the glitchy demeanor.

How on earth did no one see a problem with Facebook from the very beginning? It was clearly ridiculous all along.

He tried to change his looks to look more human. We still remember that jacket u had on in that interview

One is about news content in general and the other is about Fackbook content that's not fact checked. Easy.

Elon didnt start rubbing up with Trump until after Butler PA.
Don't forget that all big pharma and military industrial complex were already buying joe and kamala.
I mean, what else is he supposed to do? Elon Musk is too close to Trump and Musk has a vendetta against Zuckerberg. Either he steps down or shows his belly. Otherwise he risks Elon convincing Trump to target him and Facebook.

But how the hell do you make money by being on Facebook? I thought Facebook makes money by selling our information to advertisers.
But Sam clearly said his revenue from Facebook. Am I missing something?
Advertising. They don't just sell information, people pay to advertise to users. Ads get shown alongside content, content creators get a small cut of that ad money for keeping users on the website.
If your Facebook site generates revenue through advertising you get a cut from facebook.
But you are correct facebook takes the biggest cut and also earns money by selling user data.

I can see a bunch of self serving reasons for continued moves like this, but when it comes down to it hes giving serious power to the people with these models, and contradicting US govt fear mongering on open source LLMs etc
