What I liked about Nirvana was under all the distorion, the dark, sometimes f*cked up lyrics, were some great melodic songs that a stuck me more than the other grunge bands.
I think a big part of Nirvana's success was due to Cobain's song writing ability. In addition to what turned out to be his natural appeal and charisma as a person and entertainer...

I think you nailed this analysis. I really got into grunge in my early 20s, especially Nirvana, after listening to hard rock and metal in my teens in the 80s. I think a significant part of it was, as a young woman, I just could not take any more "Cherry Pie". Not just the lyrics, but the videos too. Kurt Cobain, in particular, was so deliberately anti-macho (remember the floral dresses he would wear?!) and it was so refreshing. I think it also explains why a band like Metallica, who never got into the "Girls, girls, girls" shtick, continued to just do what they do and be very successful in the 90s and well beyond.
Well, it's all about the song. Sometimes you do not need to be a brilliant musician to get your message across. Having said that, I always thought Kurt's playing was primitive at best, but somehow he could write a catchy hook and that was all he needed.

❤ this so much! I grew up in the seventies I'm a hardcore classic rock but I love this the first time I heard it. Maybe because it expresses my feelings? He was a good guy definitely somebody I would have hung out with
KURT COBAIN WAS A PURE GENIOUS, THE MUSIC THAT NIRVANA CAME OUT WITH WAS PERFECT TIMING, MAY KURT R.I.P., THE MUSIC AND THE MAN WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN, COUSIN FIGEL
I grew up listening to 50's, 60's, and 70's music. I saw these guys when they made their appearance on Saturday Night Live. It was awesome! Even thought the music was different than what I grew up listening to, I loved it! Just all out jammin! They bought cheap equipment and beat the hell out of it! I remember Kurt shoving his guitar right into a speaker cabinet and through the speaker cone! The bass player threw his bass into the air. It came down and smacked him in the head. Dave Grohl showed no mercy on his drum set. It was all out. No holding back. That's what I loved about them!👍😎🎸🎶
Very Interesting analysis on a song that changed everything in the early nineties. Still remember being at a Christmas party in 1991 and this being played over and over and all the kids moshing !
One is extremely talented if they can make full stops in their music from a very high peak, and Kurt does it often in his songs. I love those full stops.
I was lucky enough to see Nirvana live in '93 before he died. He had a weird habit of playing all their songs in 1 tuning. I'm not sure why he used to do that?
A few weeks ago in one of your Yngwie Malmsteen videos I mentioned that Yngwie was a terrific player but a terrible musician. Kurt Cobain is the opposite of that.
Yngwie is a typical artist good at playing music on his instrument. He is not good at creating amazingly beautiful tunes and sound with diverse colors compared to recent player like Misha Mansoor,Tosin Abasi&Reyes and even Julian Lage. You would find great numbers of guitarists learn their great techniques from Yngwie and Van Halen and then dig into depth in melody itself while listening to Allan Holdsworth,Pat Metheny,John Scofield,Wes,Joe Pass… That is the point. And don't get me wrong.I'm not saying Yngwie can't make beautiful melody. He is more like a pioneer started the shred-playing trend with typical classical sound than one of the greatest on complex-harmonic-playing stuff.
What a joke. YJM has wrote stunning beautiful music. He is amazing guitarist who can write some amazing music. Blackstar is definitely beautiful music. So is blue....
In my life, the Beatles were the first group to revolutionize pop music, and Nirvana was the second. I heard musical trends change within 5 days of Nirvana's first performance on MTV.
I always caught that that TOTP were mimed but they looked good lol! I prefer Rockpalast and Midnight Special because they were really live or at least I know MS was, and Rockpalast's definitely seemed to be. Learned about a year ago that the first hit Nirvana had was a cover of Shocking Blue's Love Buzz! I do remember seeing them on MTV when I was a little kid but pretty sure it was this song I saw them do that made them big. That whole 'who cares' attitude, the rawness, power cords, anyone can just pick it up and play - all of that you mention sounds like some commonalities with garage rock of the '60s. The style or type of lyrics and atmosphere are different, but those other elements seem very similar to me after listening to your explanation. Interesting as always, Fil. :)
What everyone has to realize here, is that this song was such an earth shattering hit at the moment, that all Kurt wanted to do here was parody himself and his band, and his success. He probably had the dryest sense of humor in all recorded history. Believe me, if they wanted to mimic the studio performance, they sure as hell could have.
Yes they did have a really good mix on that album, recorded at sound city studio in california... There is a movie about that studio.. I like them they were good..
Yeah, Grunge marked the true end of Rock and Roll as a driving force. It was dark and many drugs were consumed with tragic deaths following. Hip Hop took over from there and our days were over. A sad moment...
Hi Fil. You said it with your very last word. 'Rock'! It's all Rock n Roll but I love it! Paul McCartney was asked one time in which band he liked to be exept the Beatles (and Wings too I think) and he said 'NIRVANA'. And he was for one gig or so.😁
I was a teen in the 90s and saw all the grunge bands and alternative bands at the time, and yes it was a big middle finger to hair bands and polished 80s glam rock and it touched us as young punks, we were already listening to punk at the time, and these bands were, like the song says, "come as you are".. It was a time of be yourself, and there were so many of us that did not fit in. This spoke to us. It inspired us, and will always be the sound track of my youth, I was there, and it was some of the best times of my life as a young man and music lover. It was real it was raw, what more can I say, it struck a chord with my generation, we did change music, we change it all, although it seems mainstream music is feeding people fast food junk again, we did make an impact. Nirvana definitely set the stage of that to happen. No flashy solos no hair spray, no spandex, no makeup. Just good songs. We also smoked a lot of weed..
Spot on analysis of how people will like one type of music and the next is trash to them. I was the same back when grunge came around. I didn't like it much at all. Some was ok, but for the most part I didn't appreciate it until years later. Dave Grohl was and is freaking great! Fil Rox! Great as always!
Fil, love your vids, your perceptions and observations are usually in line with my own. The "grunge" scene was not unlike the early Beatles or Stones of the 60's, the Ramones or Sex Pistols of the 70's, or the early metal of the 80's, very basic in it's presentation and sound but the deeper you dig, the more technically impressive they become. An artist you may find interesting would be Son House, specifically Death Letter Blues, the time signature and slide guitar work is impressive. The song was also one of The White Stripes staples during their live shows. Keep up the great work....
I was living in London for a bit and the cheap flat in Bayswater had a RADIO ALARM clock and I woke up to NIRVANA with a JESUS WTF is THAT!?? AND I heard "They are AMERICAN.... " Oh shit I LOVE IT. Seems I have always been introduced to GREAT Music while Staying in LONDON. Bowie (REBEL REBEL) RAMONES SEX PISTOLS and NIRVANA (my REACTION . Great riff and the DRUMMER is great !) I'm mainly a classic rock fan but I love Grunge. I've been wanting to hear you do an analysis on this genre. Very enjoyable! I would love to hear one on Alice In Chains (Layne Staley) & Stone Temple Pilots ( Scott Weiland) Thanks Fil🤘
There is just something about this song that sticks in my head. It’s? Well I don’t know what! And that’s not a bad thing ! This is not by any means what my fav type of music is but it’s memorable and yes I like it ( my two cents ). Thanks for the analysis!
I like seeing Dave Grohl on drums as he had a very different style to what he does now as lead singer of Foo Fighters. This song is an essential part of a 90's musical library. An enjoyable video showing the quirky style of Cobain and Co.
I was so glad when Grunge came on the scene. Don't t get me wrong i also lked 80's music, but the raw garage rock sound was so refreshing after all the over produced music from just before it. This was the kind of music i could actually play on guitar too. Haha
Grew up on jazz , blues and country. Then Hendrix, Who, Zep and Tull. Punk Rock changed my life. Hated hair bands. Loved grunge. Still would love your take on Gang of Four's "Love Like Anthrax" absolute control of feedback.
Smells like teen spirit has always felt like my guilty pleasure rock song because I'm not the biggest fan of 90s grunge rock. I just love banging my head to it because the song has a sort of beautiful recklessness about it. Anyways, I love your channel and your accent! ☺☺😁
I've lived in Washington for over 30 years, all through the grunge years, although I didn't care for most of Nirvana's music I did really like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, some early Pearl Jam. I did get to see Soundgarden in Seattle in 1992 👍😎
ps - Look how primitive someone like John Lee Hooker was, as far as the musicality. However, he could create magic out of ONE chord. That can be a lot more interesting than tons of chords changes and notes. Lots of chord changes and notes are cool too, if done the right way.
I like Grunge rock like Nirvana and the Punk rock like Green Day and I am an old man. It's not a knock on old school rock because I love it as well. Sometimes, you just want to hear something a little chaotic, lol.
Nirvana made me appreciate powerchords, rawness, and pure chaos.

I grew up in the 60's and 70's and loved all the music.. I didn't listen to much of anything after that, until Nirvana came along. I haven't listened to much new music since.
❤ this so much! I grew up in the seventies I'm a hardcore classic rock but I love this the first time I heard it. Maybe because it expresses my feelings? He was a good guy definitely somebody I would have hung out with
👍
That's what I loved about them!👍😎🎸🎶
👍
The album was called Nevermind I just remembered.
👍
Pretty amazing clip, thank you Fil. Nirvana, always in the moment.
No problem!
Very Interesting analysis on a song that changed everything in the early nineties. Still remember being at a Christmas party in 1991 and this being played over and over and all the kids moshing !
👍
Best video yet Phil! Nirvana rocks!
🤘
Fil is a millennial that actually gives you hope for the future.
Thanks!
One is extremely talented if they can make full stops in their music from a very high peak, and Kurt does it often in his songs. I love those full stops.
👍
I was lucky enough to see Nirvana live in '93 before he died.
He had a weird habit of playing all their songs in 1 tuning. I'm not sure why he used to do that?
A few weeks ago in one of your Yngwie Malmsteen videos I mentioned that Yngwie was a terrific player but a terrible musician.
Kurt Cobain is the opposite of that.
i gotta look for that. how could YJM be a terrible musician, beyond being YJM? ok, my way or the highway but still.
Yngwie is a typical artist good at playing music on his instrument. He is not good at creating amazingly beautiful tunes and sound with diverse colors compared to recent player like Misha Mansoor,Tosin Abasi&Reyes and even Julian Lage.
You would find great numbers of guitarists learn their great techniques from Yngwie and Van Halen and then dig into depth in melody itself while listening to Allan Holdsworth,Pat Metheny,John Scofield,Wes,Joe Pass…
That is the point.
And don't get me wrong.I'm not saying Yngwie can't make beautiful melody. He is more like a pioneer started the shred-playing trend with typical classical sound than one of the greatest on complex-harmonic-playing stuff.
Cant say Yngwie is terrific at song writing yet he is totally not terrible.Just a bit boring sometimes with his endless shedding.
What a joke. YJM has wrote stunning beautiful music. He is amazing guitarist who can write some amazing music. Blackstar is definitely beautiful music. So is blue....
It's always difficult to compare guitar compositions to full songs I think.
And Dave still rocks
Yeah!
Nice take on where music was at! Cool!
Thanks!
👍
Didn't like grunge....but that's what I like about ur channel u give every style a fair shake great job....rock on brother
No problem!
That's right! I don't like it very much (grunge) but the analysis is very interesting as usual...Well, in fact, I don't like that guitarist at all XD
Yeah, Grunge marked the true end of Rock and Roll as a driving force. It was dark and many drugs were consumed with tragic deaths following. Hip Hop took over from there and our days were over. A sad moment...
Long live GRUNGE,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,just joking 💥🔫 😁🚬🍺
Horrible takes.
Hi Fil. You said it with your very last word. 'Rock'! It's all Rock n Roll but I love it!
Paul McCartney was asked one time in which band he liked to be exept the Beatles (and Wings too I think) and he said 'NIRVANA'. And he was for one gig or so.😁
A mosquito, my libido.
😂👍
4:39 this guy does not stop smiling
😂
Spot on analysis of how people will like one type of music and the next is trash to them. I was the same back when grunge came around. I didn't like it much at all. Some was ok, but for the most part I didn't appreciate it until years later. Dave Grohl was and is freaking great! Fil Rox! Great as always!
Yeah!
Will do!
And I got a coffin for sale. Good comment, though.
Did you reference spinal tap with that "love pump" comment? LOL. Awesome variety on your Channel. keep up the good work
Haha yeah an indirect reference to a great piano piece! 😂
I'm Metal also for the most part. Amazing early rendition though. Yeah, see Dave killing those drums.
👍
I was really into grunge years ago. I found myself listening to Primus and Fishbone recently. Technically very proficient, but also very off the wall.
👍
Grunge was America's 'Punk' movement.
Bowie (REBEL REBEL)
RAMONES
SEX PISTOLS
and
NIRVANA (my REACTION . Great riff and the DRUMMER is great !) I do have a gift for the Obvious
Dave drumming was the glue that kept it all together...massive drummer
👍
Yet again being an OG fan of yours give me street cred! OG meaning old guy. Nothing gangsta about me lol. I got to see Nirvana live with The Melvin’s as opener’s Dec. 93. I had shitty seats and I was not hyped. They put on a good show. Not spectacular but I’m glad I was there
Cool!
When I first heard this I was shocked in a good way
👍
Cobain was a Melvins groupie before he formed Nirvana. This is the music that inspired him, hell the whole Seattle Grunge movement: th-cam.com/video/NamE5qRBaSM/w-d-xo.html
NOTHING BETTER THAN A HIGH SCHOOL BAND.
😂
I'm mainly a classic rock fan but I love Grunge. I've been wanting to hear you do an analysis on this genre. Very enjoyable! I would love to hear one on Alice In Chains (Layne Staley) & Stone Temple Pilots ( Scott Weiland) Thanks Fil🤘
I started from Nirvana but attracted by Alice in Chains for Layne's more delicate vocal.
👍
"Touch My Love Pump?" Hmmm, don't remember that one. 🤣🤣🤣
Turn it up to 11!
Thanks for featuring Nirvana. Great grunge and very loose. I love Dave Grohl!
Yeah Dave is a talented dude!
👍
I think Dave Grohl bought up the analogue recording equipment from Sound City recording studio because of that sound.
👍
I was so glad when Grunge came on the scene. Don't t get me wrong i also lked 80's music, but the raw garage rock sound was so refreshing after all the over produced music from just before it. This was the kind of music i could actually play on guitar too. Haha
😂👍
Grunge had only a couple songs I liked but I liked those couple of songs
👍
Grew up on jazz , blues and country. Then Hendrix, Who, Zep and Tull. Punk Rock changed my life. Hated hair bands. Loved grunge. Still would love your take on Gang of Four's "Love Like Anthrax" absolute control of feedback.
Thanks!
I love the Smells Like Teen Spirit album!
It was actually called Nevermind
Speaking of Lynch, have you ever listened to/reacted to Mr. Scary from Dokken? It's such a layered song. I love it.
Not yet!
This guy is spot on
Smells like teen spirit has always felt like my guilty pleasure rock song because I'm not the biggest fan of 90s grunge rock. I just love banging my head to it because the song has a sort of beautiful recklessness about it. Anyways, I love your channel and your accent! ☺☺😁
Thanks!
Maybe try breaking down Enya after this performance. I so enjoy watching you do this.
there are great and very talented musicians in grunge.... Mike, Jerry, Kim, all great guitarists and very specific
I've lived in Washington for over 30 years, all through the grunge years, although I didn't care for most of Nirvana's music I did really like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, some early Pearl Jam. I did get to see Soundgarden in Seattle in 1992 👍😎
Cool!
Would like to hear your take on the Black Crowes.
Thanks!
I absolutely refuse to commit musical senility. I give everything a chance.
Super influential. Great genre. Influence is more important than technical ability.
👍
ps - Look how primitive someone like John Lee Hooker was, as far as the musicality. However, he could create magic out of ONE chord. That can be a lot more interesting than tons of chords changes and notes. Lots of chord changes and notes are cool too, if done the right way.
👍
I like Grunge rock like Nirvana and the Punk rock like Green Day and I am an old man. It's not a knock on old school rock because I love it as well. Sometimes, you just want to hear something a little chaotic, lol.
👍
