While I was almost aghast that you dug up the plant at the end of the video, in actuality that was very educational. And, I'm also very appreciative of your including plant progress well after the propagation. Many thanks!
So glad i found your chanel! I have a type of Salvia in my garden that i wanted more of it but I can’t find them anymore at the nursery, so now i can just propagate the ones i have for wider area coverage! Am so thankful and yes that Whitney insert was hilarious! I agree with the previous comment 😀
I took a White Buddleia cutting in July 2014. It didn't grow very well because of location and competition from other plants. I moved it in Autumn 2017 to somewhere sunnier and clearer and it grew beautifully. I have it on the top left of my channel homepage in 2018, sadly it died in May 2019 due to wood rott from too much soil at the base. Luckily I had already taken a cutting from this plant in 2018 when it started to grow for me. This cutting is the one I still have today and it looking very healthy.
Who else got a little anxiety when she tried to pull the plant? 😅 overall nice pleasant video. Salvias are beautiful, and a treat to grow. The bees thank you.
Thank you for the video. I have been attempting to propagate salvia for some time...I think I may have been doing far too much and making it much too complicated. Im going to follow your directive here! Thank you again!!
Thank you for the reminder that sometimes they die! 😂 In Las Vegas, I struggle with this. I have a gorgeous Black & Bloom salvia that nearly died during this last 120⁰ heat wave. This video gave me the courage to try to propagate again! Happy gardening ❤
Plants that grow in full sun, in my experience here in blazing hot California (or Vegas), do best in part shade, with a lot of mulch on top to prevent the soil from cooking
@@Taydrum Oh, you're absolutely right! Mulch & babysitting plants for caterpillars & aphids are what got these guys through this summer. I only have lantana in full sun (& the other incredibly overused bush here, sage). Other than living on the surface of the sun + wind that reeeeaaaally tries to dry out every last drop of moisture in everything, I'm thinking that there's just so much reflected light/heat? I have succulents & other full sun plants in what is essentially bright shade. Full sun is definitely not full sun here! Haha Now that we're down to 105⁰ (ish) all the babysitting was worth it- flowers & hummingbirds... yay!
@@projectionv.accountability1010 Very nice! Lantana is definitely one of those plants that can take the heat. I know what you mean about reflected heat though, I have plants that won't survive near a reflected wall. I tend to, when I can, water the areas that reflect the heat or try to cover them with something that can absorb heat. Even with that, however, some plants die, it's just how it is in our climate!
Thank you for your video. It was very helpful. I just planted two kinds of salvia for the first time. I dont know much about them, only that they're really pretty and butterflies like them. Yay! I need more, but I don't want to buy more. I'll be doing this and save some money. Thanks again!
Why why would anyone thumbs down this video did she say something that was untrue did she mislead you in any way or are you just jealous of her Green thumb????🌱
Only thing you may want to mention is once the salvia plant is mature or even before full maturity you need to back off watering. Salvia is like a desert plant and doesn’t need much water. No irrigation needed unless you live in a super dry area or experience a drought. In most sunny areas the rainfall is plenty.
Yes, it is a clear instruction, you can see it on other films. Probably the smallness of her garden makes the testimony less convincing. But I thank Hanna because it is a useful advise.
Great informative video. I try putting cutting in the ground like you show and all wilted even when it was water everyday. What zone are you propagating in? You didn’t cover your salvias from the sun.
I was devastated when the one salvia I purchased from the store accidentally got sprayed with weed killer, but then it showed signs of making it on for my family member to accidentally weed whack it, lol. I think it died, but it's partner is thriving, so I'm going to try both methods since my mailbox area where I planted these look so uneven with just one. Thanks!
Cheering for you! i started gardening last year with my wife and was thinking of starting a channel but never made the jump. I like your videos and wish you success on your youtube journey! btw how is your avocado tree doing? that's the first video i saw heh
Thank you so much for the support! The avocado tree is doing very well and looking healthy. No signs of fruit yet, but patience is key with avocado trees ☺️
I bought a salvia blue plant on clearance this weekend and wanted to grow more. Your video explained it well on how to propagate. I was wondering, in your area, is it a perennial or annual, I got it bc it comes back every year in Virginia, a perennial. Thanks
Did you plant it in bark mulch in the ground or was there soil under the bark mulch? If so, what kind of soil? I have clay /rock /construction garbage under black gardening fabric covered with bark mulch. Can I plant it in the bark mulch or do i have to dig a large hole to grow it in soil?
Bought salvia today but broke a branch on the way home so I will plant the branch in the ground directly and see what happens. Thanks for the information
Same thing happened to me today, hence the reason i am watching this video : ). What method did u end up using to propagate your branch, water or soil, and how did it go? About to stick mine in a pot i think rather than the water.
No, I wish! I work full time as a dental hygienist but I love everything about gardening so I’ve taught myself most stuff! Plus everything I look up on the internet or read 🤓
@@passionforplants3242 I recently got into gardening due to the lockdown, I found your channel as I was looking up advice on climbers. I subscribed. Keep up the good work and good luck.
Mediterranean plants yes for the soil method mostly for the soil vs the water for propagation purposes. Those plants like more dry feet to grow better....
The soil has microlife + nutrition, which we can't be sure there is either in her potting mix. Ultimately the roots need to acclimate to soil so the water may be a waste of time here.
I bought some of these at home Depot and after they flowered they started looking dead I cut the tops off and they started growing and branching off so I think I'm just going to cut them off and find a new place to plant them lol
I just learned this today. I bought some last year before winter and planted them. Then, the other day I bought 4 clearencs gallon salvia. (2$)at Walmart ( post bloom) blooms looked dead. Today went out and cut everything off down to the leaves and some. Then later TH-camd (salvia care and how to prune) while getting in shower to listen. ( cuz Plants are freaking hard! I keep killing shit!) …. They said , this plant blooms twice ( only prune big dead blooms, little one you might see mixed in are baby blooms. ( FREAKING WHOOPS!) just cut all my potential baby blooms off cuz I thought they were dead. On all 6 salvia I now have. But one video said you can cut down to ground and it will grow back. .. I freaking hope he is suggesting that I can cut all my new blooms off and they will still re-grow and not just the foliage cuz I’m salty as hell.

Some with no real lives of their own, get off on criticizing others. 😡
You generally don’t take cuttings that have blooms forming. Fresh shoots with no bud formation are almost always more successful
What a great video! I just bought two plants and would love more. The one you put in the ground did fabulous!

Also, like most things, they'll root when potted up in some ProMix, all ten cuttings I took in September have rooted.

Thanks for sharing, what's the ratio of sand and peat moss, Can I also use the ratio for all plants?. Thank you

What time of year do you propagate salvias TIA
I do wonder if this can be done successfully in September ? So that the roots can underground through the colder months. (Alabama)
Will plant some salvia this yr....cant grow much here in Maryland bc the deer eat almost EVERYTHING
In my area salvia is deer resistance,I planted bunch of them in my garden ,so far no deer bother them.
How long should I wait until I try this? I got my mystic blue about 3 months ago.

It needs to grow in soil. Mine had some mulch over the top but soil underneath. It needs soil to establish a good root system

What month do you take Salvia cuttings
Samuel
Glasgow
In California, I can take cuttings pretty much year round since the plant is always growing and blooming
It looks like the roots are not coming out from the nodes. I believe the roots are coming out a little bit under the nodes. Is it right?

Peat-free soil is now preferred. It seems we gardeners are contributing to the destruction of peat environments all over the world.
Luckily coco-coir has peat beat in every way :)
Ah but sure they blame us useless eaters on everything🙄😂
We are destroying the peat beds for no good reason because we have alternatives. I am a gardener and I do not use peat
We dont grow in ‘dirt’ it is soil.
