I'll do a TL;DR on Malcador. He was the Emperor's best friend and closest advisor ever since the unification wars (when the emperor conquered terra). He is considered one of the strongest human psychers, although not on the level of the emperor. He gathered the initial grey knights before making his sacrifice. What happened was that Magnus had opened a hole in the webway project of the emperor while trying to warm the emperor about Horus. This lead to the emperor having to stay on the golden throne to keep the rift shut, and to stop it from swallowing terra. But to go fight Magnus, he had to leave it. This is where Malcador sacrificed himself, taking the spot on the golden throne, despite not being fully strong enough to control it. So it was tearing him apart slowly. Surviving only just long enough for the emperor to make it back.
