WHY THE RED BULL HARDLINE TRACK IS CHANGING?!

The 2024 Red Bull Hardline course is brand new! A whole new top section of downhill track is going to push the worlds fastest World Cup racers to ride further and rougher features than ever. This is my first track walk video with the pro athletes seeing everything through new eyes. But the news is now official that the river gap is being removed from the track. So although I tested the insane canyon gap on Friday with Bernard kerr and Jim monro who had the crazy crash - the decision has been made to remove it from the course and create a plan for the future to make it work better for all riders. Thanks for all the amazing comments and support for hitting this jump! Legends
You are part of an exclusive club. 1 of 3 that attempted it and 1 of only 2 that landed it. 👏👏
I mean...technically they all landed..
@@TheWildCamper what goes up..
Hell yea mr obvious
@@JakeWolven😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@TheWildCamper One did the whole jump and landed without a bike even, now thats gotta be more difficult hasnt it ??
Matt so excited he forgot to take the tags off his new jacket
🤣
Yea.... hes gonna sell it as brand new...
He got it from the GAP
Nah, he's going for the Top Gear look
🙂
You have to keep the tags so everyone knows it’s authentic lol
The river gap not being included is the most sensible call... considering 3 guys jumped it in your last video without the race pressure and fatigue of the ride... you over shot the landing, one nearly missed the landing and the other almost died..
As if the consequences of not making the distance weren't enough you also have to factor in that if you do land it off centre you're literally doing the eternal yeet and disappearing off the edge right after the landing strip...
Yeah I agree, I also though right when I saw the first video about the jump, even though it’s Red Bull, I just feel like the jump didn’t fit, it feels like something that shouldn’t be in a dh race. and with everything being and making use of nature, this ugly tower of scaffolding looked ugly, I’m happy about this call
It was irresponsible to let them hit it without a safety net. I love Hardline, but my excitement turned into anxiety, and that's not why I watch.
If you watch Bernard in slow mo, you can see just how huge those 2 compression points are on the lip. It's a bad design and it felt rushed and unsafe.
Plus a lot of riders would've dropped out. No shot Dunne would hit it given his place in the standings and the year he's having, and if Jackson was healthy he wouldn't hit it either. Too much risk for too little of a reward.
@@FeatureFanatic951that's actually a really good point ... Yeah, the course is IMO the nicest in the world, the mix of natural and man made features blends into the landscape really well. Then you have that monstrosity and it sticks out like a sore thumb. The scaffolding and all the blue pads, it kinda just ruins the vibe.
It’s been rebuilt with a new lip with less compression they just couldn’t get a net in time as the council took too long to approve the planning but it’s been confirmed it’ll be in the course for the next 5 years 🤙
@@LKnight32 nothing really wrong with it being on the course for me…
It just can’t be a feature that is guaranteed to kill the rider if they make a mistake… making it safer would also not reduce how fucking cool it is to jump such a big gap over the canyon.
I suspect a bit more safety planing would also see the riders like the idea more and enjoy the feature rather than feeling terrified by it
It was a wicked cool jump but yeah safety for riders first. It's difficult to tell where the line is for "too crazy" when redbull is constantly redefining where that line is
Got a really cool photo out of it though!
I might offer Gee's drop at Rampage last year as a good example of what might be too crazy.
What are you talking about?! They are all PRO'S, Matt and Bernard already cleared it?? If you can't do it you shouldn't be at Hardline!!!
@@kristian6622 😂 troll
@@kristian6622 I think this is kind of a legit comment. They are professionals and they are totally capable of deciding themselves if a jump is doable or not. We saw that it was possible (allthough extremely sketchy), and all of them have a good feeling for the speed necessary and how much you have to pull.
Big props to the trail builders, I hope they realize how much we all respect them.
Definitely the right decision. The weather and the construction was asking for someone to get seriously hurt.
They'd be lucky to get seriously hurt on that thing. You come up short and there's a good chance you're dead.
this is the best man to watch mtb on youtube , like you see the best parts of a clip in just 13 minutes that is amazing , keep it up bro :)
im actually relieved that the river gap is out.
I'm gutted. Only reason I was interested in watching
@@LeeCFC Don't watch then,if you only want to see huge air then go watch mx
Something about that jump felt very very cursed. As stoked as I was to see you Jim & BK go for it, I'm glad it's been removed. ROLL ON HARDLINE 2024!!!!
Jump was fucking insane! Would’ve been unreal to have it in the race but understandably why they removed it…
Wonder if it would’ve made a difference if that jump would’ve been at the start with a massive ramp like they do in the Winter Olympics where they send the skiers off the ramp. They’re fresh, no popping off a rock feature with muddy caked on their tyres. Would be interesting!
Same, I had a bad feeling about that feature
Almost certainly would have ruined at least one life.
Dude, love to see all parts of the track, even the small things that should be easy but are just horrible! I think maybe Hardline has become too focused on the big death-gaps, rather than the "actual" downhill. Big props to you guys, you're the best
I’m all for riding as hard as possible; however, I don’t want to see a pro-rider die because the jump is that gnarly. The river gap is too much without netting, and quite frankly, it would be a travesty if a rider ruined their career or life for one jump. Glad to see it removed as odd as that sounds.
So glad the river gap got pulled. Hearing Mat 'relieved' that it's not being used but also dreading the drop that's back in as a result says to me that it's the right move. The drop is a feature that belongs in this type of event - a crazy dh race.
The river gap has the shock and awe element for media use, but it shouldn't be used while at the level of risk involved. One serious incident there could really set back the future of these types of events.
Good thing we're keeping some lives in the sport!
I got called a Karen for calling this jump dangerous the other day. 😆 Red Bull is now the preferred drink of Karens everywhere! Glad to hear they made the right call here.
Yeah, that Karen comment was unnecessary.
Glad we’re saying RIP to the river gap… and not to a rider.
So glad they took out the jump; you guys don't have to prove anything - you're the best on the planet as it is!
9:07 redbull hardline canyon jump gets handrail before his home compound 😭😭😭
Yeah you both doing good job on talking through stuff in a sensible way. Good redbull has noticed that and gets you both in/around the events.
Theo is always a highlight in any video he's in. Such a cool and charismatic dude.
thank goodness sanity prevailed and nobody had to die for us to be entertained.
Co-incidentally watched your video about the giant river gap on Thursday, then on Friday went on holiday to Wales, only to pass the exact place where the Redbull Hardline was going to run! Gutted I missed it by a day, but yeah the midgeys were terrible, the weather was rainy and the hills were awesome.
Glad to see the river gap is out. You can never make that safe and the outcome of getting it wrong would be catastrophic for Hardline and future events. Sure it was a difficult call for the organisers but they made the right decision. At the end of the day, riders shouldn’t be put in situations where they are getting seriously injured or worse just for the sake of pushing boundaries beyond reasonable risk. I’ll be there on Sunday to watch the race unfold without any serious mishaps. Good luck to all the riders who take part and enjoy…👍👍
We need a compilation of just Theos laugh 🤣🤣
Whole track is absolutely terrifying. Props to you guys.
Matt has improved so much from last years downhill, it’s pretty crazy. I would have never expected this stuff from Matt 12months ago. Jumping the house, testing and racing hardline etc…
Who else was thinking that brendog would be a absolute nutter & backflip the river or canyon gap just like he did last year at hardline in America 🇺🇸
Happy to see the river gap out of it. It wasn’t appealing to a viewer, too unnatural of a feature for mtb
Spoiler alert. There's no actual action.
As sad as it is, I think we can all agree it was the smartest decision
I haven't watched much hardline content before. Are any of the course builders filming the process of how they are building these lines? The logistics of it all seem like backbreaking work and I would love to see how it's done.
Thank god, well done community for vetoing this death trap. Those crash pads won’t do sh*t.
Actually an insane jump.
You looked soo good going down Hardline here in Tassie 😍 Love from Tassie
It's changing cause the last video had me scared sat on the edge of my seat just watching it . Wild well done 👍
That was your brother? Genuinely thought it was you and was confused af 😂
Shouldve kept the jump. Apply netting underneath, best riders in the world lmao
Great video! Can’t wait to watch over the weekend
Best trick river gap session 😮
Yeah big ups on doing the gap mate. You just did it no questions 🤯
Enjoying your year fella! Thanks for great vlogs and mad dog riding 🎉
I'm glad it's gone lol, that gap had ridiculous consequences
Matt “ça va”. French man “ça va et toi poulet”! He just called Matt a chicken 😂😂😂😂. Guess he didn’t see him clean the wooden waterfall jump across the valley.
I can't believe you rode this matt. You're crazy respect 🙏🏽 I can't wait till the main event your channel just keeps on getting better 🏆👍🏾
Honestly thank god they decided not to use the river gap. There is no way everyone was going to clear that clean, no one wants to see someone die in one of these.
It's awesome to see how seemingly comfortable you take in the road gap now. It's hard to imagine that being dwarfed, but it seems the river gap may just have done that.
love watching you guys open new lines, features, parks, etc... so awesome
I hope the canyon gap can be improved and net added for next year. I for one would love to see it included (*safely).
Maty the progression you've made is insane!! Love the videos! Patiently waiting for you and jono to hop on the mini bikes again 😂
Hi Matt I am a huge fan I’ve watched you for years and I’m big into mountain biking I’m 11 years old and from North Yorkshire I would love to meet you and your my inspiration to ride mtb and downhill
Thanks.Tom😊
Theos laugh is insane
Good coverage. Guess that jacket's going back!
Fuck that gap , no way that should be on the course
Good insight, even though Matts a pro he looks at it like I would and calls out all the savage stuff, all the other pros just walk by like yeah whatever!😂
I think this is a wise choice, because of wind, which, even if calm elsewhere, could be unpredictably strong within that ravine, and nearly guaranteed to be a crosswind. But wow, the bragging rights: you landed a jump that's too hard for Hardline. You guys should make a t-shirt or something.
Thanks for showing the small details Matt. That's just as interesting as the big stuff !
River jump needed to be bigger.
Congrats on 800k!!! Cant wait till you gee to one million and hopefully you can clear the house
*get
Matt when are you going to make another series like The down and The playground, I have watched both series twice and love them. like this comment if u agree.
The big road drop was mental but there is a big difference between that and a possible death gap. The take off transition was far too steep with no contingency for shorting it. Good to see sense prevail in the era of big sponsored caffeine drink insanity. Kudos for the send but I bet 50% of the field would not have sent that.
Okay this is my second day in a row watching one of your videos. Yesterdays jump was epic, the crash not much so. (hope dudes all right) but what I was going to say is if I spend two videos worth of time watching someone's content they get a sub and a thumbs up. Good luck brotha I'll be watchin!
Hello Matt always good to see your video. You make watching videos fun You're sense of humor and wittiness with your buddies always has me cracking up and I don't even ride I'm a 60-year-old man. But I sure do enjoy watching you guys do what you do. As I have said before the vast majority of you people have brass balls. It's just amazing what you're willing to do on a bike. Looking forward to your next video. I know you have a life but if you'd put out 50 videos a week I'd watch every single one of them. Peace from Oregon
Fascinating to see the track in such detail.
Watching you guys blast down it doesn't give a true sense of just how jagged and treacherous the rock sections are.
Seeing them like this increases the respect for your riding ability enormously.
I look forward to watching the competition and hope you all complete it unscathed.
Best of luck.
Love your videos, Matt, keep working👌
Glad to see that ridiculous river jump gone too! Honestly, we need to get back to old school DH racing and away from this Jackie Chan stunt bullshit....
Who paid to build this ridiculous feature? You're fired!
They should keep that jump for a separate gig where those interested can hit the (fixed) jump. Would be pretty cool. Was daft keeping it in a race run though.
1:55 - 2:00
Just like 4 wheeling. Take a picture and show people and they are like 'Dosent look bad.'
That's disgusting. Makes it more impressive that johno done it on such a heavy bike.
I'm sure rider's will want weight for that river crossing. I'd expect that valley to be pretty windy and with such a 'small' landing it's going to be hard to watch
6:21 Thats what she said 🤣🤣
Love your vids and updates
should have kept it
1. Kudos on the jump! Absolutely madness 😁👊🏻
2. Concussions are no joke.
Avid mountain biker, I love fast Rhythm sections, big berm turns, sweet jumps..... even 60 feet or more Gap jumps. But, there's really no sense in having that Jagged and large rocks that are a life-threatening as well as mechanically ending hazards...... just at a jogging Pace you fall on those rocks, and you're done if not killed your career most likely over. I can understand making the life-threatening and risk-taking jumps and just the all-out speed even the river Gap jumps and like the downhill events...... the giant Jagged sharp rocks, you can't get up good speed tear up tires rims and your life ..... not necessary to make it exciting and dangerous at the same time
I have a feeling that to be successful at this you basically have to have zero imagination. All the "imagine going wrong here..." kind of thoughts would surely stop any sensible person from flying their bike down this :)
Looking forward to some proper POV race footage!
This dude doesn't stop complaining. Every video ive watched of his he is complaining about something/anything. Kinda exhausting to stay tuned throughout a 10min+ video of a guy moaning.
I had serious anxiety watching you jump this on yesterday video. If it goes wrong it could go wrong catastrophically. Sensible move to take it away.
If it was easy I'd be riding it, just sayin'.....less than 1% of mountainbikers would be able to land most of that shitt....🤨
Keep pushing the boundaries and someone will die, that gap was a bridge too far (pardon the pun)... those 90ft plus jumps make me feel sick just watching.
Honestly kind of dumbfounded RB didn’t just install a safety net. With their budget, it seems this gap could have been made “safe”.
They couldn't source one
defeats the point lol
They would have if the kept it in for the rave also you're forgetting all these riders have jumped way longer jumps there's longer jumps on the track the 90 foot most land at 100 so yeah 30 feet longer then this. They rebuilt the kicker on it and it was still to kicky and they just don't have the time to build it how it needs to be also wants to make the landing wider on riders left as well it'll be back next year
Budget?! They can hardly give riders a payout for winning the event lol
Everyone worried about a river gap , but all good with jagged rocks 2 story drops and 90ft gap jumps like none of that shit could hurt them😂
Impressive course without the canyon jump! Impressive riding as well!
It is an almost 100% fatal event if you miss. If you pile into the scaffolding the whole thing comes down on the rider. There is no good ending if you don’t clear it. Unless there’s some sort of safety net constructed it’s not a surprise. I watched you guys hit it in the other vid. Bonkers. 🤪👍
Honest question: If women are doing Hardline, were they intending to also do that canyon gap or was there different routes that were planned? Seems a bit wild that women would’ve been sending that canyon gap. Wondering if that played in to the decision to eliminate the gap (?) Glad to see that the course can safely accommodate women as well.
The sound on this is so much better than bernards video
The transition so brief
The lip kind of steep
Never mind your intentions
The gap wants you to backflip
"This bit's horrendous"
Do you mean the entire track? You should. Every shot just looks like Nopes to me 😂
Im super gutted the canyon gap got pulled, but if it's too crazy for the best riders in the world, then you have to respect that decision. Really hope they manage to make it safe enough to ride for next years though.
What did that, err, French dude say to you from atop the start line?
Something, something enculer?
😮😅
I'm not a down hill rider and I am so pleased that gentleman was okay after that horrific crash...it is so difficult to see what happened, how did he get separated from his bicycle?
"Wont cease to hurt you" hahahahaha
Feel goods
They should have just put a net between the takeoff and landing. Then it shouldn’t be as dangerous as it is without. Its a bit sad to put in all the work for the river gap just to not get ridden😢
That wasn't the issue with it... all these riders have jumped longer jumps the issue was the kicker was to kick they rebuilt it and it was still to kicky and now obviously no time left to fix it it'll be back next year why are yall crying lol first it was oh no it's to dangerous now it's oh no why'd you take it out 🤦♂️
A net was part of the plan, they said at the end of BK's video.
Matt got the shot of a lifetime tho 😂
@@freerider8737don't see many people complaining that it's been taken out...
After watching the race it’s crazy to see this and see how rough and sharpe all the rocks and track actually is. Crazy
When you think your pretty good on a bike ,then watch your vids. big erm erm .loving the vids some bollocks on you mate keep them coming my mate
Even tho it's not really the biggest gap on the whole course it's probably for the best that we just put the river gap on hold for now lol.
those that crash on the jump would immortalize the sport. nothing is more appealing than watching someone do something knowing the risks. it taps into something primal.
Lets be honest, it needed refinement. It sure got attention world wide though!
It's amazing in this age of nannying and health and safety that this track exists... I'm betting the riders have to sign all manner of disclaimers though!
They still ride the TT as well, which is astonishing.
yo sick stuff today matt keep it up
I think the river gap can be a good feature but it needs more time to be perfected. Hopefully it can be included next year
I think they should have left both ways open and do as you may. Then nobody is forced down it and props to both ways. 🔥
Why run air in tires? Why not run bibs like dirt bikes? Bibs are where you fill the tire with foam. And you can choose the pressure
