    Let's also not forget the history before and after the Biblical stories of Bet Shean. The large tel next to the Roman ruins show the Egyptian occupation when Egypt ruled the area and ruled the Canaanites (this is why Canaan is considered a son of Ham even though they are semitic and speak the same language as the Israelites).
    There are two or three Eastern Orthodox churches on the grounds of the archaeological site but not visitable. There are also an Ottoman seraglio and mosque nearby. Unfortunately the Israeli state hasn't kept those buildings well. The seraglio is used sporadically and the mosque is destroyed and behind a fence.
