This song is one of those songs when you look into someone’s eyes and even though they seem happy you can tell that inside something really is hurting them
I am so sad about her being gone so young. But I am even sadder that this amazing song has had only 138 views. I have listened to this song for over 50 years and I still love it. May she RIP. Thank you Sandy.
I was introduced to Sandy Denny in 1971 when I was hitch hiking. A girl picked me up and we went to her home in Berkeley and she put the Fotheringay album on. From that time even unto today I am a fan of hers and believe she had the most beautiful voice I ever heard.
Sandy fans are for life, there is no way you can ever forget or not listen anymore to Sandy. She was the greatest female singer and songwriter and the most introspective.
Also hitchhiking, in southern France in 1971. I met an English guy in Tarascon at the youth hostel. He told me about a group called Fairport Convention and said I might like it. I found their album with Sandy singing and that set me on a lifetime of searching for more of her and others like her! I owe that guy a great debt of gratitude.
A staple in my highschool English classes. Used to have the class listen to Fotheringay - then try and write down the story as they heard it. Yes, of course it took several careful listenings - and some little discussion. But then, that was the point, wasn't it. Hearing her voice makes Life more beautiful each time.
Sandy Denny will live forever in her music even when our generation has gone . She paid the price of her fame and beauty at that time when drink and drugs took so many young lives . R. I .P . Dear Sandy xx MARTIN SHUM
She is rightly celebrated and remembered for her fabulous voice, but she was also a wonderful songwriter, as this song shows. One of my favourites. I love the way that the band leave the space for her voice with some beautifully restrained, soulful playing.
Great song, with a very contemporary sound even it is from 1970! The guitar playing is very impressive, seems that Mark Knopfler also had this album :-)
Thank you Sandy Denny, you have left us with your beautiful voice with Fotheringay . May you rest in peace. We have lost a true gem in music. The Swiss Trans Am Bandit.
sandy denny la grande élégance elle fait partie de ses grands artistes qui en concert était toujours impeccable niveau voix et instruments bravo a elle paix a son âme
What a beautiful & very moving song this is. It`s been some years now that I have not heard " Nothing More " I will pull this 5 star album from my collection. I do own the first press LP in mint condition of this wonderful album,I will make sure to open a good bottle of wine by the fireplace this weekend with my wife to listen to this gem again. Thank you Sandy Denny for the music you & your group have given us!!! The Swiss Trans Am Bandit.
Yes, Sandy Denny wasn't the tallest of women - just look at the photos of her together with Robert Plant! - but the stature of her VOICE was far above and beyond anything measurable with a yardstick! Her voice was not only HUGE but unbelievably moving, majestic and haunting in equal measures. One of the very greatest singers I've ever heard (right up there with Luciano Pavarotti, Steve Perry and Ann Wilson). What an amazing gift that the mere sound of your voice can move those who hear it to rivers of tears. You can wait around and hope, but you will never hear the likes of "The Lady and Mystical, Melancholy Weaver of Musical Dreams" Sandy Denny, again. Sleep well, sweet princess... sigh...
I think I am probably about the height of Sandy Denny. When I stand next to guys that are around 6' or 6' 1" that is where I stand too. Photo at about 2:28 on video. Have been such a long time fan of Sandy's, since the late 1960's. I am in USA and only wish I had had the opportunity to have seen her in concert. Was in UK and Amsterdam in early 1970's but don't think they were performing at the time of my visit. Did make it to the Isle of Wight though.
Just finished reading Sandy's biography. She wrote this for Richard Thompson after he was recovering both physically and mentally from the Fairport accident...'so my friend you are suffering'
There is just something about this song that moves me every time, and I never tire of hearing it. It is one of her masterpieces. There are only a few songs that give me shivers every time I hear them, and most of them are Sandy Denny's. Two others that spring to mind are Natalie Merchant's 'Thick As Thieves', and Free's 'Come Together In The Morning' (especially that haunting Paul Kossoff guitar solo).
Much as I love Sandy Denny, that's not really a competition. That's apples and pears. This song is brilliant - Sandy Denny had a great voice, perfect for what she sang. But compared with Piaf? Get serious.
I think there's this connection to being young (15-24) and the singers of those times. That's a given. Add to that the generation that was the "60s" (which went into the wee 70s too), the politics of reform and change that was in the streets of developed nations and you have some kind of glue ready to fix. Now put some big drops of Sandy Denny in there and the bond is everlasting----and good.
Sadly ... Sandy took the Stairway to the Stars ... all too soon ... how very beautiful she was ... greetings to one and all from Jarrahnut ... in wonderful Western Australia!
wow, have not heard fotheringay for ages, but as I remember, the ladies loved this band as much as the men did, just kind of a band that everyone loved. Thanx for putting this on
Pop? NOOOOOOO. Try British Folk Rock, or Progressive Folk Rock. This is a great Folk rock song, and Denny was clearly the vocal queen of the Folk Rock era.
She was a short little thing who played that huge guitar with skill and ease. Beautiful songs and her gentle voice of conviction. Olde English So special....any true folk singer knew Sandy Denny and played her.
@@neilasimpson Don't you think you're being a bit over sensitive?. It's just a figure of speech. In fact, I meant it in the most endearing way. She was petite and cute. Get a life for heavens sake and stop looking for issues where there are none.
My friend I know you've suffered Although you are still young Why was it you who'd not take help From anyone? Oh, it's true, it's very true, he said Some hard times I have known But I have always overcome them On my own Oh, the pearls that you hold in your hand They are beautiful to see But you show them not to anyone Not even me For you are like the others, he said I never can be sure That you wish just to see the pearls And nothing more Why can you not see reason? Our lives they are not long Why can you take no time To tell us all we're wrong? My tune it does not change, he said And neither does your song And words I use them rarely When I'm all alone
Beautiful song, still amazing now Im 74 and still love it. RIP Sandy😉

Today would have been Sandy Denny's 76th birthday. This song is one of her masterpieces. Such a beautiful voice.
I loved her from scratch! Especially Crazy Man Michael. Bob.
yes..j'ai 76 ans pour elle....
@@rolandtruc 77 years now.
those years 1969-72, Sandy Denny's total awareness of how little time we have, no matter how long we might live, nothing more

Sandy Denny was a wondeful vocalist, what an expressive voice, so powerful, best female folk singer ever..and a superb songwriter, what a loss.
This track utterly slays me
She was a true treasure to all who was lucky enough to hear her. Missing her. Bob.
Well said. Nothing more to be said.

You could have heard it in our home in Berkeley too. ❤
Oh, Sandy, you left us much too soon. You brought happiness to the world for such a short time. Rest in peace dear woman.
A good day to celebrate and be thankful today. Sandy Denny, born 71 years ago today.
Great backing here by Jerry who shined bright, to share a pint with Sandy, laugh and see that smile once again; i'd give a donor heart.
one of the best females singers forever ad ever!!
Not just one of the best but quite simply THE BEST!
Just heard this for the first time and have been listening to her all my life. How the hell did I miss this. A PURE WORK OF ART.
I’d somehow missed this song over the years. I’m simply blown away at how much I instantly fell in love with this one! Absolutely love her music! ❤️

So much raw emotion, and that guitar.. whoa
Such a beautiful voice
Great times in 1970's never to repeat

She is like the British Kurt Kobain... raw emotion, skill, irreplaceable, & gone too soon.
what???? 🤦
No offense, but even Cobain would laugh at that statement.
Sublime.
I just bought the lp on catawicki , marvelous
As soon as she starts to sing i just melt, she pulls so many emotions out of me.
I'm right back in the seventies and I remember all the words
Fantastic
Fantastic - I keep going back to Sandy, Fotheringay and FC - It's all beautifully timeless
This is a great popsong, magnificent and sensitively sung by Sandy Denny. It's not underrated but unknown to a lot of people and that's a pity
It's not pop.
Pop? NOOOOOOO. Try British Folk Rock, or Progressive Folk Rock. This is a great Folk rock song, and Denny was clearly the vocal queen of the Folk Rock era.
If Sandy Denny was pop, she wouldn't be 'unknown to a lot of people'. Instead she would be known by all and be Pop-ular .
Beautiful Sandy 💕
beyond cathartic....the very best
Love her

how is it underrated?
I think he means underappreciated, as It is very highly rated by those that know it.
Gerry and Jerry are super too fantastic group with sadly 2 R.I.P.'s
Good drum sound, well played.

I think this song was about her relationship with Richard Thompson. Always found Thompson rather empty, and that’s what I think this song is about
Could be reading the lyrics but I would describe Thompson as detached more than empty and that fits the lyrics also
beautx
Kinda hear where Zepp's Stairway's guitar solo ideas come from here.
That kund of chord progression is everywhere
@markcbb okay...
Personally, I think it's the vocals & piano that 'make' it
A song for Frank.
My friend I know you've suffered
Although you are still young
Why was it you who'd not take help
From anyone?
Oh, it's true, it's very true, he said
Some hard times I have known
But I have always overcome them
On my own
Oh, the pearls that you hold in your hand
They are beautiful to see
But you show them not to anyone
Not even me
For you are like the others, he said
I never can be sure
That you wish just to see the pearls
And nothing more
Why can you not see reason?
Our lives they are not long
Why can you take no time
To tell us all we're wrong?
My tune it does not change, he said
And neither does your song
And words I use them rarely
When I'm all alone
sadddly she neeed it , so sad ...
!!!
@arhatyellow Beautiful comment. You were interested in more than just the pearls.
is nothing else matters was inspired from here ?
so sweet

Bin ganz der selben Meinung.
It sounds so better live. There's far more emotion in the live version.
