To bloated to consume high potassium foods and i feel miserable that potassium after a workout bring you back to life you feel amazing
So consuming potassium to counter the high sodium diet is the key to maintain the sodium/potassium ratio rather than take drugs to lower your blood pressure. I wish this good doctor's knowledge would spread throughout the world.
DR BERG, I couldnt sleep for 3 months. I woke up atleast 3 times every night, and my sleep was very pooor. I tried melatonin and 5htp and valerian... the list goes on. but..... I took Potassium last night, together with a lot of veggies and a few bananas before sleep - and BOOM! my sleep went back to normal! it's a miracle.
Potassium chloride can and will elevate Potassium levels in the blood, so could be dangerous. Potassium citrate is the same form that's in food so is just "available" for the blood to uptake enough Potassium to reach optimal levels. I don't know about Potassium bitcarb. Best solution would be to supplement with Potassium citrate powder, you can add to morning water, increase gradually as it can upset the stomach until you're used to it. Once Potassium levels are optional then just salt your food to taste as having optional Potassium levels gives you a bigger margins for error with sodium. I do this, it has been a game changer for me.
@@Crazeefish313Can I ask how much you would be taking as well. I had a very strong heart flutter for a moment while I've taken this over the last 3 months but it's only happened once and I was taking either twice or 4 times what it recommended at the time
1-4 ratio of sodium to potassium is only for sedentary individuals. Physically active people need more like a 1 to 1 ratio or a 1 to 2 ratio, because 10x more salt is lost during sweating than is lost with potassium.
I get some of my potassium from a lemonade I make by adding sea salt and low-sodium salt (potassium). I drank it once and got a headache a couple hours later that wouldn't go away. Took my blood pressure and learned that it was lower than normal. Gave it some thought and remembered that I had donated blood just a couple days before. Bit of an unusual circumstance but I think it's worth pointing out that potassium can lower blood pressure. That's good for a lot of people but if you have normal to low blood pressure or have recently given blood you might wanna go easy on the potassium supplements and see how you feel before you take a fair amount. Just a suggestion.
I'm good now but I really appreciate the insight. You really saved me with your potassium info a while back & I'm really grateful. I won't forget it. I send people your way, wish I could do more. Take care, God bless!
This was very useful! I do fast and eat whole healthy foods. I am an older, small woman and I find it hard to eat the large portion of veg that you recommend, and I worry that perhaps my vitamin/mineral intake is not enough.
Justme I buy potassium citrate in powder form. A 1/4 of a teaspoon = 1,000mg. Or LoSalt is cheaper and the same. You can add to your food, or I add a 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon in my apple cider vinegar drink and add a slice of lemon. That amount then allows for potassium to be consumed in food.

I used to get my potassium from bananas alone. Since I cannot eat that any more :) Now mostly get it from veggies and avocado. Be careful with potassium supplements. Dr Berg recommends people get it from foods not supplements. I took way too much potassium from his mix (it has almost no sodium) and got high pulse rate and BP. I was super thirsty which was my body sayign to drink water to flush it out. Blood test showed high potassium and low sodium. Went to the bathroom all day yesterday and today have no problem with urgency.
Wait, isn't a high potassium to sodium ratio supposed to lower your BP? It raised yours?? From taking his electrolyte mix? How much did you take? I was thinking about making my own electrolyte mix, with a 4:1 potassium to sodium ratio or so... But your comment is making me pause...
Dr. Berg! Thank you for addressing this issue. You suggest potassium so much and so often (and I know it is important), but your people need to know the difference and know when to watch for it and not just start chewing on lite salt all day.
Dr. Berg would you ever recommend adding cream of tartar (potassium bitartrate) into your smoothie as a quick hit of potassium, especially for those who just started out on this being severely deficient in potassium? What downsides would there be using this as a booster of potassium intake in addition to the 7-10 cups of veggies you recommend?
I supplement potassium, but I work outdoors in central FL and sweat a lot, especially in the sauna-like summers we have. I also supplement magnesium, and salt some of my food.
It took awhile but i learned the importance of electrolytes while intermittent fasting. In tracking my food intake with an app and even with healthier eating, i find the sodium is usually always higher than the potassium when it should be reversed. It seems deliberate in our food supply to not have these levels more balanced.
my experience with potassium is that I can't take more than half of half a teaspoon, otherwise a feeling of tachycardia occurs. Dr.Berg often talks about having a 1:4 ratio of sodium to potassium. The issue with taking 2300mg of sodium (which he recommends), is that you would need to take 9200 mg of Potassium to follow that ratio. What am I missing here?
Yes plz! I've been researching, trying to determine which form of potassium is best- or if it even matters much; potassium chloride/citrate/etc. I've read quite a bit saying potassium chloride is best for low carb eaters, but it's usually a report w/a product promo or such- so who knows for sure. Went to medical journal type sites, but they simply describe each form-errggh, confusing!
On a different video Dr Berg listed “potassium citrate”, but that’s just from memory from a few days ago. Maybe try looking up “Berg and potassium” on TH-cam or his website

LMNT has 1000mg sodium to 200mg potassium! 5:1 ratio! I was wondering the same. I'm considering making my own electrolyte mix but I'm trying to see what the ideal ratios should be.... LMNT's ratios are basically the exact opposite of Dr Bergs...

Hey Doc, the Mayo Clinic states this: Heart disease-The sodium in sodium-containing citrates may cause the body to retain (keep) water; the potassium in potassium-containing citrates may make heart disease worse, Can you do a show on this?
@@Drberg So does that mean a 1:4 ratio would be 1500mg of sodium and 6000mg of potassium? Isn't that kind of low for sodium on keto ? Should it be around 3-5g which would make you consume like 12-20g of potassium?
I consume about 1800 mg of potassium citrate powder as a supplement everyday. I makeup 100 vege '0' capsules at one time with a manual capsule filling machine. Each capsule holds a 1/4 tsp which has 448 mg of potassium which is 10% of the RDA. When I was starting my potassium supplement search, I bought a bottle of potassium chloride and found out immediately that it was way too salty to use as a supplement. LoSalt is an example of potassium chloride, a salt substitute which I don't use because I do not want to eliminate sea salt seasoning (sodium) from my diet. Sodium is just as important as potassium but I use the two like at 3:00.
Hello Dr Berg, How much potassium could I take whilst on telmisartan 20mg and amlodipine 2.5 mg. I am worried about kidney problems. I use my healthy table salt which is 50% sodium and 50% potassium. No kidney problems and just starting my blood pressure meds a week ago. Thanks for your great video's.
I am going to add more potassium to my diet and see if it helps with blood pressure. I just looked at my suppliments and it said only 99 mg which is nothing.
Noxious vs Nauseous Q: Does ‘noxious’ and ‘nauseous’ mean the same thing? A: No, not really. ‘Noxious’ means (morally/ physically harmful; disgusting -especially smell) while nauseous on the other hand means (causing sickness in the stomach to the extent of inducing barfing). E.g. The reek of rotten egg is so noxious it makes me nauseous.
Was on the avocado only (because well, Hell I'm 45 Mexican Italian [which health wise isnt the best combo] and I don't really have a non sedentary job)....went on the egg only diet.....besides bad breath it shot my tryglicerides and cholesterol up. Gonna go back on raw veg diet. Mediterranean at the most..........(no high blood pressure no too bad tri/cholesterol....trying to keep it there)
Thank you for bringing this up because I’m taking potassium with salt tea water because I do have Addison’s disease and I don’t want to overdo it but it seems to have been helping me. Thanks for letting us know how much too much is. I really appreciate that I need all the help I can get.😁👍
So I did take too much potassium. I had too much salt in my diet so I used a salt substitute. I just kept putting it on and didn't realize it created physical repercussions until later. How do I dump it quickly? Do I have to fast? I don't really want to do that right now, I feel like I need to keep my energy up and I'm too fragile to do so.
I just need to write this somewhere - trying to go keto this week of thanksgiving was not my brightest idea! As a hostess I'm cooking so many dishes and I have to taste every side dish I will be serving, impossible to be carb free this week 😂 Who else out there feels stuffed today? We will make it! We can do it! 💪🏻😂😂😂
I was looking to make my own electrolyte drink mix, so i wanted to make sure i have the ratios right. LMNT, probably rhe biggest brand for electrolyte powders, has 1000mg sodium to 200mg potassium (5:1 ratio).... The sodium seems rather high... I saw a Harvard article that said hunter gatherers had more of a 1:16 (one sodium to 16 potassium) ratio in their diets, which is way, WAY different from what LMNT says... My blood pressure is slightly high, so im trying to see what an ideal sodium: potassium ratio would be for me for my electrolyte drinks. Maybe 1:3? (One sodium to 3 potassium?)
Is it ok to drink water ONLY when we are thirsty? How many glasses do you recommend? I drink a lot but I don't want to be low of potassium. Thanks doc.

@@deborahdanielson8901 I did that very thing~ thanks Deborah =)
Chloride is the best. Citrate is for kidney stones
If I am doing OMAD would I need tons of electrolytes?
thanks Doc.
Sounds damn near impossible to eat enough veggies to become sick due to high levels of potassium.
Dr Berg...do you recommend creme of tartar for potassium?
Hi! Here's a video of Dr. Berg that talks a little bit about cream of tartar: th-cam.com/video/hevna_sDcvA/w-d-xo.html
He did not mention the difference in supplementing potassium from food or through oral pills (powder). It seems there is a huge difference
I have had TIA's ( mini strokes) last 2 winters, my skin gets really dry and hard I was on dirty keto first time and then I was on day 11 of a fast last time . hopefully this winter with alot more Potassium and lots of veggies, I won't stroke out this winter.
Dr Berg, why do all the electrolyte supplements have more sodium than potassium?
LMNT has 1000mg sodium to 200mg potassium! 5:1 ratio! I was wondering the same. I'm considering making my own electrolyte mix but I'm trying to see what the ideal ratios should be.... LMNT's ratios are basically the exact opposite of Dr Bergs...
Came here to ask same question
Great information, thank you, I upped my potassium mostly thru food to lower BP and to my surprise it dropped around 10 points. I since decided to stick to food only just to be safe.
Thank you! Dr.berg really appreciate your knowledge....
So glad you addressed this! Thanks!
Dr Berg, you inspire me to be healthier! Pls can you do a video on high white blood cell count and what it means and treatment for it thank you!
Great episode as usual!
Fascinating! I didn't know that, thanks!
Glad you find this video informative.
Saeurkraut, Kimchi, & Avo's 🥑. I do sometimes put 1/8th teaspoon off Cream of tartar in my AM electrolyte drink though, pretty sure I'm OK. Thank you for sharing this very important information with us all, & take good care off yourself to. ❤🙂🐶
I've read nettle tea is a good source of potassium because the body absorbs it well. I naturally crave it anyway because it helps me to warm up my body
I’m usually fasting until lunch. When is a good time to take these supplements? Potassium, Magnesium, vitamin c, vitamin D, multivitamin.
How to ask for pottasium ? Is it good to take
Potasium citrate ?
What about potassium supplements?
Please do more on this topic.
Thank you for your suggestion, we will look into this for future videos.
What type of potassium in supplements you would suggest to take ?
What about if you’re getting chronic kidney infections from a hernia?
I've been with your channel for about two yrs and always great info.. learned alot. Most I knew but the way you break it down.. impressive!
Hey Doc, the Mayo Clinic states this: Heart disease-The sodium in sodium-containing citrates may cause the body to retain (keep) water; the potassium in potassium-containing citrates may make heart disease worse, Can you do a show on this?
Doc had a question I am taking L-Arginine and cetruline is it safe to take potassium?
But if keto rdi for sodium is 3-5g and potassium 4.7g that's not a 1-4 ratio?
🤔🤔🤔🤔
When I say 4.7g, that is the min. it really should be around 6g
@@Drberg So does that mean a 1:4 ratio would be 1500mg of sodium and 6000mg of potassium? Isn't that kind of low for sodium on keto ? Should it be around 3-5g which would make you consume like 12-20g of potassium?
Your body can automatically make you crave what's deficient....
greg814 It’s all clearly in the video.
Did you notice any effect on your blood pressure or heart rate once you started to supplement with potassium?
Hello Dr Berg, How much potassium could I take whilst on telmisartan 20mg and amlodipine 2.5 mg. I am worried about kidney problems.
I use my healthy table salt which is 50% sodium and 50% potassium. No kidney problems and just starting my blood pressure meds a week ago.
Thanks for your great video's.
I am going to add more potassium to my diet and see if it helps with blood pressure. I just looked at my suppliments and it said only 99 mg which is nothing.
Noxious vs Nauseous
Q: Does ‘noxious’ and ‘nauseous’ mean the same thing?
A: No, not really. ‘Noxious’ means (morally/ physically harmful; disgusting -especially smell) while nauseous on the other hand means (causing sickness in the stomach to the extent of inducing barfing).
E.g. The reek of rotten egg is so noxious it makes me nauseous.
At night take one capsule of potassium citrate by Thorne Research at 99 mg., in the morning 1/4 tsp of Himalayan salt in hot water.
Can you take potassium bicarbonate
Was on the avocado only (because well, Hell I'm 45 Mexican Italian [which health wise isnt the best combo] and I don't really have a non sedentary job)....went on the egg only diet.....besides bad breath it shot my tryglicerides and cholesterol up. Gonna go back on raw veg diet. Mediterranean at the most..........(no high blood pressure no too bad tri/cholesterol....trying to keep it there)
What is potassium asporotate?
Dr. Berg you should mention pheochromocytoma. High amounts of potassium while using spironolactone to manage this adrenal tumour can be dangerous.
Great info !
Hello dr Berg, thank you so much for the clarifications, I am a big fan of your work, kudo for your pertaining information.
Thank you for bringing this up because I’m taking potassium with salt tea water because I do have Addison’s disease and I don’t want to overdo it but it seems to have been helping me. Thanks for letting us know how much too much is. I really appreciate that I need all the help I can get.😁👍
Dr Berg ,you re capacity to replicate the searchings in medical field are overwhelmingly and 100%accurate Good bless you .
What effects did you feel from too much potassium?
What about taking potassium chloride?
What type of what is the best form of potassium to take?
Every time I take potassium chloride, maybe 1k , I have lip swelling and chest pain. What's the deal?
Is potassium bicarbonate ok to take?
Thank you for this thorough explanation. ♥️
How do you prevent ulcers or other problems with potassium supplements?
Thanks, great info here!
How to reduce high pulse rate . pls suggest .
If the potassium to sodium ratio is 4 to 1, then why does your electrolyte powder only have 100mg sodium?
Great question
Probably because the average American salt intake is 3400 mgs a day in their diet.
When I take your electrolyte powder or potassium chloride like nu salt it gives me heart palpitations I don't take medications so why does this happen
My guess is it's probably throwing your electrolytes out of balance? Always listen to your what your body chemistry is signalling to you!
Thank you, Dr Berg.
Is it ok to drink water ONLY when we are thirsty? How many glasses do you recommend? I drink a lot but I don't want to be low of potassium. Thanks doc.
Can you do the same topic for Magnesium? thanks.
Hi there! please refer to this video:
What are the harmful effects of excess intake of nutrients? - Dr.Berg

If I have to take olmestartan, how much potassium supplements can I take on keto?
I don't like most of the potassium rich food, how do i reach the daily recommended dosage of 4700mg?
It's not like there is a safe pill at 2000mg?
If you're on a strict keto diet, it's really tough to get the recommended amount of potassium (4700mg/day). I'll have to look around at supplements, because the only ones I've found are 99mg.
How did you solve your potassium .what did you do to get 4700mg / day of potassium.
Cream of tartar
I feel like I was at a medical school with the top doctor in the world for my health and I am off my metformin for diabetes and I am on having a small amount of no added sugar chocolate instead of full sugar chocolate and thank you so much
So why are the K supplements such a low dose? 90mg per capsule? Why?
Apparently because of you take high amounts it can mess with your heart. Look at this thread alone and there are several people commenting that their heart raced after taking 1000mg supplement powder
