I enjoyed the Klepto arc actually. It shows Skylar's change from hating crime to partaking in it. It is clever writing to me. She used to hate just the idea of shoplifting and the embarrassment of being suspected for the crime.
I think it shows how awful Marie truly is. At the end of better call Saul....she's throwing all this shade towards Jimmie for helping Walter. Guess what Marie....so did your sister. Plus she was a F'n thief. And her husband was an as**ole. Obviously doesn't compare to what Walt did, but still.....a lot of balls on that woman.
I feel like it also adds to her personality with some of the stuff she says later, like telling Walt to off himself when Hank finds out Walt is Heisenberg. I feel like it also shows Hank and Marie arent a perfect couple, they have their own problems too
The Take has a great video on Marie. Her arc may seem trivial, but it’s an important mirror for what’s happening to Walt. The rationalisations Hank makes for her v. Skylar’s unyielding moral standard foreshadow how things will go with Walt. It’s not to be overlooked.
Peekaboo is one of the episodes I immediately think about when it comes to Breaking Bad. I don't believe an ATM being tipped over from that height would instantly kill a person though.

My take on the Marie klepto arc: It has nothing to do with Marie--and definitely not her relationship with Skylar. It has everything to do with Skylar's relationship to the law and morals. When she returns the tiara and is held in the manager's office, she makes a very interesting choice. She could let the police come, explain the situation, and get Marie in trouble. However, she chooses to fake going into labor instead. This tells us two potential things about Skylar. First, it shows that--while she is appalled by Marie's actions--she still chooses to not take the step of getting the law involved, which foreshadows the actions (or in her case, inaction) she takes when she finds out about Walter's much more severe crime. Second, it shows us that honesty is what Skylar values most. Skylar is unwilling to accept any sort of apology from Marie due to her not fessing up. She demands an apology not for the apology but because she needs the truth. We once again see this pop up when she confronts Walt after he is recovered from surgery. She doesn't care if he is having an affair, is doing a crime, sneaking out to play hinky dinky with the punks in the park--the problem is he lied. And, when Walt and Skylar finally sit down and Walt puts everything on the table, this is when the choice is made: Skylar is not going to the police.
I watched Breaking Bad since day one (lived in Albuquerque all my life) and to me season 2 is when the show took off in quality and hasn't been matched since by either BCS or Breaking Bad. Thanks for the work you do, Kiwi!

Breaking Bad definitely has a good number of SS tier episodes. Besides Ozymandias, we have Face Off, Gliding Over All, Falina, ABQ, and several other episodes that could certainly be debated into SS tier. Basically, if there isn’t an SS tier, then he’s lying to himself and us.

Yeah but the whole point is for small things like that to build up and raise suspision for Walt. The show is supposed to be tragic and for things not to go the best way, making every character take the best possible decisions to avoid all consequences and get the best ending defeats the whole point of making a story
Hank's beer didn't pop because they were sealed too tight. They popped because either he bottled them before fermentation stopped, or he miscalculated the sugar addition for bottle carbonation. It's a somewhat common mistake with novice homebrewers. Also, how the heck did he break a bottle with a bench bottle capper? Once you adjust the height for one bottle (which is impossible to get wrong), the plunger only goes down far enough to cap the bottle no matter how hard you push on the lever. There's even a spring-cushion on the plunger.
I still find it strange that the writers went with the poison bean thing for Walter vs Tuco.....I'm thinking, Walt just went into this whole deal with Jesse about not knowing how to kill someone with a gun....but a poison that, as we learn in the final season, can possibly take a week to work, is what he thinks is the best way to get rid of Tuco? I don't get his logic. If Tuco is coming for ya....poison isn't gonna work in the moment. That always bugged me. I like that the idea was integral in the last two seasons but in this episode....it made no sense at all. Besides, is Walt seriously suggesting a gun might not work because you don't know how many times to shoot or don't know how many bullets the gun holds? If ya got time to make some ricin, you probably got time to figure out that gun. 😅
Before Gonzo death accidentally linked back to Tuco, Walter and Jessie hoped the next deal they do where they could covertly poison Tuco. When they got captured they were probably too terrified to fully realized their poison plan wasn’t going to work. I think it’s largely comes down to fear and simple stress that they forgot about the timetable on the poison taking affect
I always saw the shoplifting arch as showing how skyler would react to crime. Showing her as kind of the straight edge wife which throws the viewers expectations off as she does end up offering to help walt launder the money as the show progresses
The klepto arc is for us as the viewer. Walt and Marie are both criminals. Both are doing it for the rush. To escape their lives in a way. We as the audience tend to root Walt on in his moral descent down the meth business industry. Are we as fair with Marie? Do we judge her as a criminal while looking at Walt like some standup family man?
i am deeply concerned by the side of the fandom that dislikes Skyler White. Maybe this is just because ive had people in my life hide some pretty intense shit from me. But Skyler was pretty much justified in basically everything she does, up until she falls into Walt’s flawed thinking of that “protecting family” is an excuse to do whatever you want.
My ex introduced me to BrBa when it was in it’s like 3rd season already and on Netflix and he hated Skylar. I didn’t hate her but I totally understood why he felt that way. I guess as a writer, I could observe the characters and more easily blame Walt for being such a prick 😂
I think we should all call the scene in S2E1 between Walt and Skyler what it really is: the r word. Walt undeniably sexually assaults skyler and I think that’s super telling of the downward spiral he’s on.
I don't think it quite qualifies as rape because he did actually stop once she asserted herself, but it was still definitely sexual assault and probably the most uncomfortable scene in the show, I felt gross when I watched it

I feel like Marie should've gone down a deep rabbit hole of self destructive behavior and ended up doing meth. Leading her to eventually be the first to discover Walt and Heisenberg are the same person
I believe, that the klepto arc is really a way of flushing out Hank & Skylers characters. Let me explain. As we can see, Hank is sympathetic towards Marie, & basically lets her slide. Even though that’s his wife, he should technically throw her under the bus, so it’s showing that he’s willing to let certain things slide when it comes to family. We get the opposite reaction from Skyler. She isn’t so sympathetic & is not having any of it. To the point where she almost disowns Marie. So it subconsciously, is putting in us the idea that while Skyler isn’t going to be understanding when she eventually finds out about Walt, maybe Hank is. Being that Walt can easily tell Hank the reasoning behind his decisions. That’s why even though reluctant at first, Skyler does come around & when Hank finds out, instead of letting it go, he goes after Walt with more determination. That’s why I feel the klepto arc was put in there. To give us false hopes about Hank & trick us with Skyler
The Marie Klepto arc is actually pivotal to the ENTIRE PLOT because without it... Hank would never have caught Walt in season five. He never would have had the Walt Whitman book with Gale's handwriting... the whole "you got me" scene... Hank finding the 2nd book in Walt's bathroom and realizing the connection... that NEVER HAPPENS without Klepto Marie. When Marie gets caught, it's Detective Tim who gets her off, which results in Hank owing him a favor, which is why Tim brings him the Gale Boetticher file, which is what gets him back on the hunt for Heisenberg after being ready to give it up. Even if you assume he would have gotten back on that horse eventually anyway, the Walt Whitman book is among the files Tim brings him. This is the genius of Breaking Bad. Even the most seemingly inane side plot turns out to be intrinsic to the story!
I disagree with the thought that Walt was just being overly analytical over how they were going to kill Tuco his came across to me more like patronizing Jesse, rather than honestly trying to plan out the kill

When they got captured they were probably too terrified to fully realized their poison plan wasn’t going to work. I think it’s largely comes down to fear and simple stress that they forgot about the timetable on the poison taking affect

I always saw the shoplifting arch as showing how skyler would react to crime. Showing her as kind of the straight edge wife which throws the viewers expectations off as she does end up offering to help walt launder the money as the show progresses

The klepto arc is for us as the viewer. Walt and Marie are both criminals. Both are doing it for the rush. To escape their lives in a way. We as the audience tend to root Walt on in his moral descent down the meth business industry. Are we as fair with Marie? Do we judge her as a criminal while looking at Walt like some standup family man?
i am deeply concerned by the side of the fandom that dislikes Skyler White.
Maybe this is just because ive had people in my life hide some pretty intense shit from me. But Skyler was pretty much justified in basically everything she does, up until she falls into Walt’s flawed thinking of that “protecting family” is an excuse to do whatever you want.

I think we should all call the scene in S2E1 between Walt and Skyler what it really is: the r word. Walt undeniably sexually assaults skyler and I think that’s super telling of the downward spiral he’s on.

I believe, that the klepto arc is really a way of flushing out Hank & Skylers characters. Let me explain. As we can see, Hank is sympathetic towards Marie, & basically lets her slide. Even though that’s his wife, he should technically throw her under the bus, so it’s showing that he’s willing to let certain things slide when it comes to family. We get the opposite reaction from Skyler. She isn’t so sympathetic & is not having any of it. To the point where she almost disowns Marie. So it subconsciously, is putting in us the idea that while Skyler isn’t going to be understanding when she eventually finds out about Walt, maybe Hank is. Being that Walt can easily tell Hank the reasoning behind his decisions. That’s why even though reluctant at first, Skyler does come around & when Hank finds out, instead of letting it go, he goes after Walt with more determination. That’s why I feel the klepto arc was put in there. To give us false hopes about Hank & trick us with Skyler
The Marie Klepto arc is actually pivotal to the ENTIRE PLOT because without it... Hank would never have caught Walt in season five. He never would have had the Walt Whitman book with Gale's handwriting... the whole "you got me" scene... Hank finding the 2nd book in Walt's bathroom and realizing the connection... that NEVER HAPPENS without Klepto Marie. When Marie gets caught, it's Detective Tim who gets her off, which results in Hank owing him a favor, which is why Tim brings him the Gale Boetticher file, which is what gets him back on the hunt for Heisenberg after being ready to give it up. Even if you assume he would have gotten back on that horse eventually anyway, the Walt Whitman book is among the files Tim brings him.
This is the genius of Breaking Bad. Even the most seemingly inane side plot turns out to be intrinsic to the story!
