    Of all the compliments given to Streisand, I think Sidney Poitier said it best. "We thank you, Barbra Streisand, for giving us that voice, that echoes so beautifully across time'.

    She was starring in hit a show on Broadway. The three albums she'd released all charted top ten (the first was Album of the Year). She had signed a $5M contract for this TV special plus three more. As with her record contract, she accepted less money for complete creative control. The show would win five Emmys. She was 22. Amazing.

      Shame on you David....FOUR more specials! You can't just "CST" the year 1967 from the history books. The Belle of 14th Street DID occur...and was actually quite good. Remember David, using Critical Streisand Theory to alter the facts is a VERY dangerous practice. (insert emoji here)

    Kudos to paying tribute to Barbra on her 80th. She's my favorite vocalist/entertainer of all time. This video of Barbra when she was shooting to fame is incredible. She sounds so young and her accent is so strong. It's totally endearing. But your analysis of her vocal technique is spot on. She was/is sublime and the most versatile singer ever.

    For the concert segment, the studio (CBS) bussed in members of her fan club because they were uncertain of how a random audience would react. And RCA passed on signing her to a record deal. Mind boggling. Columbia Records had the sense to sign her and give her free reign.

    You really need to watch the movie Funny Girl to understand about her voice and her acting talent! That was her first movie and she won her first Oscar for it! That was 1968 and I remember being in that movie theater just mesmerized by all of it! I had never seen anything quite like it and haven't to this day! That was the year I graduated high school and I've been a fan since! Please watch the movie and let us know what you think. This medley is just a preview -- there is sooo much more! ♥

    Her early career is something to behold. I admire her growth as an artist over the decades, while some insist that she abandoned her "roots" by the 1970's. I completely disagree. She was just maturing, both as a woman and an artist. There was just more to her than just being a singer.
    Either way her voice and interpretive skills only became more nuanced as time went on. Very little vocal decline untill her late sixties. And her vibrato has never changed, which is very unusual. It's only her mid-range that has lost it's purity. I am so glad she has such a long and great catalog of music to choose from.

    • @BrettTwinSavage
      @BrettTwinSavage 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree completely with you regarding those who claim she abandoned her roots in 1970. Besides the rationale you mention, she ran the risk of becoming completely incongruent with the times--but thank God for Richard Perry and "Stoney End" in 1971. I think it's no coincidence that at the same time she updated her music career, she was also staring in her first non-big budget musical playing a loud-and-filthy mouthed hooker in a raucous comedy (that was originally rated X no less!). I would assume Streisand knew she had to make both leaps to stay relevant. She was only 28 years old. It was time she went back to her real age.

    I just love your reactions to Barbra's vocal talents, Patrick, and featuring her from different decades; thanks for educating newer gens about Barbra, especially to celebrate her 80th birthday.
    No one has done it better than Barbra in any of the past 6-7 decades she's been singing. She's a rarity. Her ability to make you 'feel' the lyrics is sublime. And even though her belting, high "money notes" as they say, are carefully placed in every song and not overdone like some singers like to do, her greatest gift is when she nuances notes and delivers them almost endlessly in a whisper, soft and tender like on a cloud of air and emotion. As the late great lyricist, Marilyn Bergman, once said, "The best singer that any lyric writer could ever have."
    There isn't another artist I've ever heard that I could 'literally' listen to 24/7 and 'never' tire of their voice. She's that special, that unique, that extraordinary!

    Thank you so much for doing this! (Wouldn't have minded AT ALL if you had let the clip go on to include the phenomenal version of "My Man" she segued into after the medley). In her retrospective album, one of the earliest set of tracks is from her performing at a nightclub when she was only 19 or 20 years old. She does a full blown comedy number, "I Hate Music" which is actually part of a song cycle written by Leonard Bernstein, and is always amazes me how someone who has such innate perfect pitch and musical ability is able to make it comedic by singing 'just' off-key in it and sounding like a 5 year old girl. And then she immediately follows it with "Nobody's Heart Belongs to Me", and you can just sense the audience sitting there, mesmerized as she breaks your heart as the lyrics protest just a little too much that she doesn't at all mind the lack of romance in her life. You probably don't know the comedienne Phyllis Diller, but she was already an established star when Barbra was her opening act, and she has talked of how this '19-year-old child' would have the audience in the palm of her hand taking them on a musical journey that was absolutely thrilling.
    Mike Wallace had a rather confrontational relationship with Streisand and could be very critical of her. "From the time I met her as a 19-year-old, I knew she was a control freak, absolutely self-involved and a real diva."
    Pause.
    "Of course I also knew from the first moment I heard her sing, with only a piano to accompany her, that I was in the presence of one of the greatest singers who has ever lived"

Of course, her version of "My Man" (which WAS in the film) could never be topped by anyone, but I feel that "The Music That Makes Me Dance" could have become iconic if they hadn't made that switch.
