  • Tornado Sirens going off in a Tornado Warning. (Polygon Based Sirens)
What do you mean by Polygon Based Sirens?: Basically, the sirens will not sound County Wide during a Tornado Warning. This system was tested in 2018 on August 28th through the 30th, and on August 31st the system live immediately the same day. So, the sirens that are inside the Tornado Warning Polygon, will sound. Just not County Wide anymore.
Also, just to clarify. Jefferson County does not test on the first Wednesday if the sirens have been sounded for a unknown reason. Tornado Warning for a example. However, I think the sirens that were not in the polygon will sound for a test, doesn't hurt to try right?

The sirens sounded at 10:42PM Last night Jan 25th, 2021 then again at 11:13pm for a large, and extremely dangerous tornado after the Tornado Warning was re-issued in a PDS (Particularly Dangerous Situation)

Please pray for Fultondale! That suffered the worst of the tornado in Jefferson County! Multiple injuries and at least one confirmed fatality for now according to Fultondale fire chief.

What is the siren system like in jefferson county alabama im trying to imagine what kind of sirens would have been heard during the april 8th 1998 tornado and the april 27th 2011 tornado

Current System consists of 244 2001's, ranging from 2nd Gen, 3rd Gen, 4th Gen SRN's. SRNB's, and 130's. 1 Modulator 3016. 1 Federal Signal Eclipse 8. 6 Whelen's ranging from 2803's, and Vortex R4's. (3 2803's being in the Downtown area. and the other 3 Whelens are in the southern part's of Jefferson, extending into Shelby County, all on ultravoices.) 2 Thunderbolts from 1982, and 1983. Both survived Upgrades, and a very old legacy STL-10A. So, that would be around 255 Sirens in the Jefferson County Siren System. From the 98 era, it be the older legacy system of Thunderbeams, SD-10, 2T22's, and Thunderbolts, Maybe a few new 2nd Gen 2001's. So, you're curiosity is better than mine. Jefferson County has more SRNB's than 130's. So somewhere around the mid 2005's or so. Birmingham got a grant to install some more sirens, then in 2016 they got a other grant to add/replace older sirens, and put new sirens in areas. This video here, one of the 2001-130's replaced a Thunderbolt 5/6. I wish it was still there, as nothing was wrong with it at all. 2011, same story old legacy system was still around. I lived in Center Point at the time in 2011, and there was 2 bolts sounding off multiple times during that warning mixed in with SRNB's, and a SRN 2nd Gen.

@@CentralALSirens Thanks for the details! I've been quite obsessed with the many severe weather events in alabama especially the ones in april 27th 2011 and april 8th 1998. I've binge watched many james spann videos because of this. I actually live in Georgia and in my area on the same night in April 1998 we had a tornado go through the area known as the dunwoody tornado which was a high end F2 that deforested an area where the current Norcross High school is and along the tornado path they added Whelen 2805's and 2905's

@@sloth5074 I was only 2 years old in 98, I definitely remember the 05 Rita Hurricane Tornado, as remnants hit AL during that year, quite hectic to be honest. I lived in St. Clair County at the time, as St. Clair County got a brand new siren system of Whelen's 2809's, 2810's, and Vortex's in 2004. That system is decommissioned as of 2015. Same thing that happen in Arab, AL. Their system got Decommissioned just recently this year in May 2021. The sirens there are slowly being removed as time goes on. Here's a video here of the system sounding in a Tornado Warning with Alert, then Tornado Warning Message... th-cam.com/video/J5a_yyh4KbQ/w-d-xo.html Then a reactivation in Alert. We have Arab's System fully mapped out I believe on the Alabama Siren Map Here: www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1XzSjoD4qIAmQg-ua7GYbCQK60S0&msa=0&ll=34.322905957639605%2C-86.48202271801806&z=13 I plan on relooking over the system, and figuring out whereabouts the other sirens are.
