Railway Crossing Malfunctions In Victoria, Australia

  • Here's something a little different! So, since I started filming level crossings (in Victoria, Australia), on some occasions I've managed to film the crossings malfunctioning. Some of these I've uploaded with level crossing videos, and others I've filmed AFTER I've already uploaded a video of them, so I've got some new stuff here. It's a bit more spectacular on paper, but I find these things quite amusing. Hope you enjoy!
I'm gonna try and give explanations for the malfunctions, but I don't really have one for the first three crossings, or the fifth one
Ewings Rd, Avenel, I DO have an explanation. So, this crossing was programmed rather strangely. It was most likely operated by a grade crossing predictor, rather than the usual track circuits, which senses how fast a train is moving. If a train is going slower, it has to get closer to the crossing before the signals activate. Once the signals have activated, if a train stops when approaching the crossing then the signals can 'time out' and will be switched off until the train starts moving again (thanks McK&H Aust for that info). For trains that came from Albury and stopped at Avenel, the crossing activated when the train would pull into the station, and then would 'time out' once the train stopped to let on and off passengers. Once the train restarted moving, the crossing would reactivate.
Aviation Rd, Laverton, I also have a 'sort of' explanation. There was a freight train on the third track, which had obviously passed through the crossing previously. For some reason, it stopped and reversed down the line for a few hundred metres, which may have caused the crossing to act in the way it did.
The malfunctions on the pedestrian boom gates could simply be caused by a fault within the mechanisms themselves

Great video Stuart! I always find crossing malfunctions very interesting. The worst malfunction I've ever come across was at Galvin Road in Werribee, where the predictor failed to accurately calculate the speed of an approaching freight train, causing the crossing to activate too late. The gates had only just started lowering when the first locomotive came through. Lucky, there was no accident, however the train did make an emergency stop as a result. Unfortunately, I don't have any footage of the incident as I was driving at the time. If only I had a dash-cam at the time!

With Aviation Road, it’s possible that when the freight train reversed, the back end of it may have been stopped with the wheels slightly over the activation point, causing the malfunction.

One time a crossing where I live, Winnipeg, malfunctioned, here's the story:
There was a huge rainstorm and, for some reason, the Signals activated! This happened I think 7 times before someone reported it. A CN Operator disabled the signals for a few hours. Only 1 train went by in those few hours, and when it happened, he activated the signals himself. Apparently, the Rainstorm messed up the Control box, causing the signals to activate at random. They were fixed and replaced a few days later. Unfortunately, I do not have video evidence, but it happened! I'm sure it's on the Internet *Some* where!

Excellent video Stuart. The High Street level crossing in Seymour has had several malfunctions over the years. I remember once I was on my way to a work job, I noticed the crossing well up ahead was activated.
When I got to the crossing a short time later, the bells lights and booms stopped. No trains either

Wow this was a really intriguing video Stuart! Very interesting to see these malfunctions, I can only imagine the drivers' reactions when they stop, but then the lights stop flashing. I remember once at the Old Calder Hwy crossing, the circuit must have continuously looped as the crossing activated for AGES! A huge amount of traffic built up and once the crew arrived, we were forced to go around from the freeway haha.

Great video Stuart, crossing malfunctions can be pretty interesting to see. My favourite clip was High Street, Seymour.
Times over the years I’ve seen crossing malfunctions were at Anakie Road, Bell Post Hill in either 2011 or 2012, when the gates were repeatedly going up and down as a freight train hadn’t cleared the track circuits.
Then in 2016 was at Gillies Street where a train departed Wendouree station for Melbourne and the crossing didn’t turn off until it passed over the Forest Street crossing.
Then in 2017 at Humffray Street where a train came into Ballarat from Melbourne and after it passed over the crossing the crossing activated for about 5 seconds before turning off again.
Then in 2018 there was that day in May where all of the crossings in Ballarat had their gates stuck down for many hours and caused total mayhem for traffic, with some having to detour, others having to drive around the boom gates and others just having to wait, especially at crossings such as Gillies Street and Creswick Road. It turns out a cut cable caused the problem.
Then there was in July that year, when I filmed the Landsborough-Elmhurst Road crossing on the Avoca line. After the gates went back up, one minute and a half later the crossing activates again and the gates go back down and then back up again, I also got that on video. It would’ve been track circuit problems.
Then two months later there was the same thing at Talbot where a train had pulled into Talbot station going to Maryborough and the crossing activated again about a minute after it turned off.
Then there was also at Lydiard Street where the crossing activated for over two minutes until the gates opened up, but then all of a sudden close again. There’s also been times the last two years where the traffic lights there flash orange.
There was also last year at Gillies Street where a train was at Wendouree station and the crossing activated and stayed on for over two minutes before timing out and turning off. It then activated a minute later and the train left Wendouree station for Melbourne.
Then of course this year in April a train stayed at Wendouree station for nearly 10 minutes before departing and the crossing activated for a total of eleven minutes. Then a few months later the crossing stayed on for up to five minutes until the train departed.

One night i came back from karate, i used Gap Road in Sunbury to get home. I was at the level crossing and the first train was a down Sunbury train and the second one was an up Sunbury. The boom gates rose about halfway from being up and down, then the bells started to ring and then the boom gates were down. After 10 or 11 seconds the boom gates went down.
The Ewings Road, Avenel crossing has boom gates, and it still does a malfunction every time an up Albury train stops at Avenel station. It may be different for freight trains.
In 2019, i went to a birthday party at the skate centre in Laverton. The crossing malfunctioned when i was stopped for a few cars to pass at the roundabout.
There is also a youtube video of a level crossing malfunction in America, but there were people holding the counterweight arms and making them go up and down
The link for that video is here: th-cam.com/video/Jub8hVz-ssE/w-d-xo.html (skip to 0:56 for a funny bit)
6:21 that freight train must have been loading into Laverton SCT depot

Interesting video Stuart. I’ve seen malfunctions here and there but didn’t get many on video. The first ones I saw was when the crossing would activate for a second or two and the shut off but this was caused by a high rail vehicle on the tracks. That was at hawker st Ovingham. I’ve seen 2 malfunctions at Moorooduc Highway though. One was about a minute after a train had passed over and the crossing activated for a couple seconds and boom gates went fully down and then went up. I only got the going up on video though. The other time there was at night. The lights were flashing but no bells ringing and the gates were going down. The traffic lights were green and no train coming. Also there was that 6 min long malfunction at moe. I’ve seen the swing gate thing before at multiple crossings

    • @ethanthevictorianrailfan7030
      @ethanthevictorianrailfan7030 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Nah its a malfunction. freight trains fly through Avenel Station so the crossing needs to activate earlier. In this case the crossing activates before the train pulls into the station (because the sensors are further back for trains not stopping) and if the train doesnt pass a second sensor closer to the crossing after a certain amount of time, the crossing thinks there is no train and deactivates. The crossing has since been upgraded and now has gates with newer electronics and equipment so the chance of it timing out like the gateless signals in this video would be rare, as the electronics for the gateless signals would have been manufactured a long time ago.

Same sensor setup as Ewings road - because there is trains that dont stop in the station the gates need to lower in time for those non-stop trains to pass through. If the sensors were just after the station, trains like the Tocumwal Freight, the Apex, and any other BG freights would have to stop at the station to allow the gates to lower. Due to wallan’s newer signals than Ewings road’s now gone gateless signals, the technology is less prone to malfunction meaning a time out like Ewings road did in this video would be preeeety hard to catch.
