It was a shame that even many Ecco fans didn't like this game because of its re-envisioning. I ADORED the beautiful aquatic appearance, gameplay was fun, and it kept the beautiful yet ultimately dark story and atmosphere that Ecco's always had. But the music? Ecco games always had phenomenal audio, and DotF certainly took game music to a different level. It just embodies the tranquility and perils of the deep, as well as the scifi and darker parts later on. I will always, always remember and be in love with Aquamarine Bay, Perils of the Coral Reef, Up and Down geyser/lake, and the Eel Chase/Power of Metamorphosis tracks. But really, may as well just say all of it.
I loved the older games, and this one as well. The only character I really missed was the Asterite, and the trips into the distant past, and I liked transforming into different animals as well... But I'm nitpicking, all of those elements could have made a return for future entries in the franchise, if only!
Imo, this is a fine game in it's own right, it just didn't feel like a good take on Ecco due to how much it differed from the originals. Gone are the complex puzzles and instead just fetch quests and pure difficulty, the story tried to be serious, but did it in a way that just came off cheesy. It's still a good game, but it just felt like a wasted attempt to fully bring Ecco to 3D.
@@thenightwriter619 I know I probably don't have the right to say this due to me not being a fan of the originals but this game was best imo. The puzzle in the originals weren't complex but were cryptic.

Tim Follin's magnum opus. This entire soundtrack is fantastic and it's so sad he's not doing more game music. If this is him doing synthesized music i can't even imagine what it would sound like if he got his hands on a full orchestra.
Tim Follin has made some REALLY great video game OST’s in the past such as Plok, Equinox and Silver Surfer for NES. He is a musical genius and his soundtrack work for Ecco The Dolphin: Defender Of The Future is absolutely no different, he perfectly captures the beauty, peaceful, tranquility, mystery, wonder, and dread of the ocean. This is some of his finest work imo, alongs with Plok on the SNES which has some of the best video game music of that era.
He actually has done couple of soundtracks in the past few years, for an UK based cmpany that makes modern FMV horror games. Latest he has worked on is At Dead of Night, a 2020 horror game about player being stuck in a haunted hotel where the owner is a serial killer out to get you. It's really really good.
And here I find myself again. Can't believe nine years has gone by. I have listened regularly for all those years. Still loving the beauty of Tim Follin's music. Thanks again Mr. Follin. 😊
The Dreamcast had a short life, but it made a massive impact on mine at the time. This game also stood out as one of my all time favorites from theme to game play...still makes my brain fizz :)
This is one of the few video game soundtracks that make me emotional, and I haven't even played the game. You could say that's for the best or I'm missing out by not playing it.
The soundtracks to the Ecco the Dolphin series are very Pink Floyd like. And I love me some Pink Floyd. The synthesizers, the guitars, everything, it's all so good!
He also helped compose for Plok on the SNES, which also sounds a little Pink Floyd-ish, with the Synthesized guitars, drums and other digitized/synthesized instruments.
Damn, this really brings back so many memories. I still remember how I loved to watch my big brother playing ecco the dolphin on mega drive. And I was so happy when he got it for dreamcast. I’m trying to wrap my head around seven haters actually making it a point to dislike this.... Even if this type of music isn’t your thing, what’s not to like?
Am I the only one who found this game ridiculously hard. I STILL haven't finished it yet, lol. I'm close though, I think. I had to finally look up the solution to one of the puzzles because I could NOT figure it out. It was the one where your trapped in the area with the red green and yellow lights and you have to change the water levels in a certain way to get out. Drove me freakin' crazy! lol
Joey mcnally Okay, THIS particular track doesn't sound much like Pink Floyd (Passage from Genesis is the one I'm thinking about), but is that really a genuine reason to insult my knowledge of music? Just because I made such a mistake doesn't mean I don't have any knowledge beyond just two or three artists. -_-
This is why I don’t want a modern console. Where’s you Ecco games? Fishing games? Platformers? Good Tony Hawk/Need for Speed games? No where except these older consoles.
@Zabuza123456789 : ) I recommend these: Blue Stinger Jet Grind Radio Shenmue (2 is japan only but can still be played, there's an american xbox version as well) Resident Evil: Code Veronica (weird recommendation because it's easier to find RE:CV X for ps2 and cheaper) Ecco The Dolphin Sonic Adventures Power Stone (2) (Excellent multiplayer games, just make sure to have more than 1 controller) Virtua Tennis (2 is called Tennis2k2 in US) (my favourite multiplayer games for Dreamcast)
@Zabuza123456789 I'd say it depends on your age (what games you grew up with) and what your looking to get out of a Dreamcast. The aspect you'll probably enjoy about having a DC is that there's quite a few games that are exclusive to the system. I got one as a kid, I sold it for one reason or another and I fully regretted it. The day I finished high school I went to the specialty game store in my city and picked up a dreamcast, a controller, memory card and Blue Stinger for 50$.
See, this is why you need Western Composers from the Amiga, C64, Amstrad or ZX Spectrum. They know sooo much better how to write music than "YAY let's import some music from Sony Music for our Playstation game and be done with it!".
+DehnusNorder I read/heard somewhere this composer doesn't like the video game music industry anymore because he felt the work goes unnoticed. I know this wasn't the case with say Chrono Trigger/Final Fantasy's composer, but I can see where he's coming from with Ecco: DOTF. You and I remember the music, but I think he's right that not a lot of other people do.
Eric Mark It does, but also keep in mind the underpayment and ridiculous deadlines/workinghours and you can see why people don't want to work in that cesspool. And just when you think your manager was the worst? Then you meet the... FANS.... Electronic gaming has a very toxic fanbase these days. They will roast you very fast over small mistakes. So the one thing that could have saved the job? Is actually something that hinders it. I mean how often have you not heard that :"European Composers are lazy, because they are spoiled". Such weeaboo crap from people that never even heard how Chriss Huelsbeck made the Megadrive sing, or Tim Follin obliterated the competition on the NES.
Damn it, the Dreamcast was and is such an amazing console, ....games like this one use to just give me so much hope for SEGA back when this was new, a real shame it just kinda faded away in favor of something that although good seemed so lifeless...namely the PlayStation 2

It was the one where your trapped in the area with the red green and yellow lights and you have to change the water levels in a certain way to get out. Drove me freakin' crazy! lol
serio que lindo cara
I've always tried to find similar music to this to no such luck :/
Okami
Maybe you should check out some Pink Floyd.
Joey mcnally ???
Joey mcnally Okay, THIS particular track doesn't sound much like Pink Floyd (Passage from Genesis is the one I'm thinking about), but is that really a genuine reason to insult my knowledge of music? Just because I made such a mistake doesn't mean I don't have any knowledge beyond just two or three artists. -_-
Joey mcnally It's okay.
Regardless of how bad this game is, This is one of my favourite Video Game tracks in the Dreamcast.
Remaster for Xbox One X and PS4 Pro please! Someone do it!
Yes PLEASE!
Stephen LaPorte id play it even though it’d piss me off lol
Tim Follin this is unfair. It should be illegal to make music this beautiful on the dreamcast.
What genre of music would this be under? Any thoughts?
New age and/or ambient.
Soooo cool ~
this game used to scare the shit out of me for some reason. it was probably the giant shark
This is why I don’t want a modern console. Where’s you Ecco games? Fishing games? Platformers? Good Tony Hawk/Need for Speed games? No where except these older consoles.
@Zabuza123456789 : ) I recommend these:
Blue Stinger
Jet Grind Radio
Shenmue (2 is japan only but can still be played, there's an american xbox version as well)
Resident Evil: Code Veronica (weird recommendation because it's easier to find RE:CV X for ps2 and cheaper)
Ecco The Dolphin
Sonic Adventures
Power Stone (2) (Excellent multiplayer games, just make sure to have more than 1 controller)
Virtua Tennis (2 is called Tennis2k2 in US) (my favourite multiplayer games for Dreamcast)
@Zabuza123456789
Dreamcasts are no longer in production. You'd have to find one privately.
Eric Mark
It does, but also keep in mind the underpayment and ridiculous deadlines/workinghours and you can see why people don't want to work in that cesspool.
I have this game
