Thanks for these - I remember watching the early 90s ones as a teenager. I started watching these randomly here, but then realised it made more sense to watch them in sequence! So I've got a lot to get through. Much better than fictional drama (although frequently so sad...).

Great old programme. Used to be allowed to stay up and watch this with my folks back in the 80s. Dad's sadly gone a few years now, but Mum's enjoying watching these again. The reconstructions I always found a bit creepy at times. Nick Ross and Sue Cook were great presenters I thought. Brilliant memories watching these. Many thanks redcard.

It is still on, but it's very different because the world is very different. You have to remember that this was getting on for half a century ago now. So many of the crimes they were appealling for information on would be solved now in a day or two. CCTV is everywhere now, phones give location data and message history, and DNA technology is a million times better. There's just no need now for police to make as many appeals for witnesses now like they did in the 1980s.

Minder was an 9pm ITV1 midweek slot for an hour and Crime Watch was live after main evening News & Weather on BBC1 but please forgive me for embellishing the story as I don't really know if Terry & Arthur were 'on the other side of the box'. Depends where you are in the country! Much of the 80s though was characterised by industrial dereliction, especially in those former industrial areas. It was literally wasteland that had been taken back by nature. You can see in the video just what it was like. Old, abandoned industrial buildings and overgrown wasteland.

The UK had the highest level of violent crime in Europe in the 1980s. It was a fairly grim decade in many ways. Massive unemployment, grey, run down dereliction of old industrial areas. People used to drink a lot more then too, and that was a major cause of the violence

From the New York Times 29 July 1984: "Two workmen making a routine inspection of an isolated water substation Friday stumbled across $6.6 million worth of silver and heirlooms stolen last March from Woburn Abbey, the Duke of Bedford's stately home, about 20 miles away, the police said today. The police said today that ''all of the property stolen as a result of the burglary has now been discovered'' and that they were seeking a man. They refused to disclose any other details."

Crimewatch is such good social history. Scary to think this is pretty much nearer in time to world war 2 than it is to now. It captures the 80s so well. A world of silent streets unless the kids were out after school, "stranger danger", dogs left to roam estates, lots of dereliction and waste ground where factories had been demolished. Local pubs filled with cigarette smoke that had to close by law during the afternoon, not always much else to do at night apart from TV and rented videos if you could afford a video player. All mixed in with the UK having the highest level of violent crime in Europe during the 80s.

It wasn't till the late 80s (earliest) that Britain started splashing some money about (no doubt due to the end of the Cold War). New Labour from 1997 *really* did started going overboard with it! And then the internet came which saw the decline of the high street tackled with no-council vision, high rates of immigration whilst giving these people no real places to live, split/clashing interests in mainstream politics (Brexit, growth vs austerity, the NHS/Covid fallout, Ukraine, Scottish independence/UK devolution/London-centricity etc). *Everything* goes in cycles in Merrie ole' England, don't they? 😁 *What a envy* to the real of the world will must be!!!!!!!!

People used cash so much more back then (most people for paid every week in cash), so there was so much more of it to rob. It was a bit of a boom business for Gagsters. Britain also had the highest rate of violent crime in europe back then. Huge levels of unemployment, so lots of people turning to crime of one type or another. "Boys from the Black Stuff" is the famous TV series that depicted Liverpool in the 80s. Poverty, unemployment and a lot of desperation. There were riots in several big cities in the 80s, in protest at the desperation people had.

I would say they robbed the stuff to order. I can’t see them stealing it without having a buyer lined up. I would have thought that it would be very hard to try and hawk that stuff around various antique dealers, 2nd hand shops and pawn brokers. Too distinctive as well.

Very brave to hold onto the money by the security guard in Guildford but also very stupid. Not worth possibly getting shot and either injured or killed for someone else’s money, that’s normally insured anyway. It’s one thing putting yourself at risk trying to save someone’s life but for money?? Forget it.

I can sort of understand so called crimes of passion and rage. But to actively go out and kill a stranger stilll baffles me today and im 50 years.of age and been a follower of crime ever since i started reading murder casebook magazines in the mid 1980s as a teenager
