Another guy s in an 80 feet death crevasse waay deeper waay steeper n waay narrower than this it's frightening just to see that n his friend died in the crevasse.. it's extremely steep n very uneven but he didn't have a broken back... Well ultimately all these guys are morons to go to wilderness to find nirvana n end up here in this channel

Most of these accidents happen though bad choices as did this one but its so nice to see he was actually prepared. His crampons, ice axe, even bear spray! And the strength, skill and determination was the reason this man survived.

I just flipped out when i heard that guy say that! and immediately checked the comments to see if someone noticed that crazt sh** lol. I They were scared of bears omg what weaklings this guy could have been having internal bleeding or something. I would have gotten that bear spray and went to get help immediiately AND pressed the emergency button. What. a. bunch. of. cowards...
@Allen Tokyo thats the problem in the us. Bills has to get payed by the person who had the accident! In germany and other countrys this bills get payed by the taxpayer or the health insurance!
In this scenario, where he was hurt, the ONLY bill he was _likely_ to get hit with is if he needed LifeFlight services (ground or air). National Park rangers, Search and Rescue, county Sheriff departments, the National Guard all work under a budget and salary (SAR almost always volunteer) and do NOT bill anyone. At least not in Montana. New Hampshire, Maine, Oregon, and Hawaii all have laws on the books to dissuade negligence in the outdoors. However, Oregon almost never bills anyone, and Maine has only issued a handful of fines. Other states and municipalities have some laws of their own. Southern Utah for example. But even then, most bills are NOT targeted at people like Ted who just have an accident, but are otherwise pretty prepared. Most bills happen when someone is on private property, trespassing, or in a restricted ares. If not fined, in some cases you could get sued.
Keep in mind, you can purchase LifeFlight insurance at a very inexpensive rate, and I'd recommend it for almost anyone who does a lot of backcountry hiking, backpacking, camping, climbing, etc.
@@midnightslab I understand your sentiment, but it's not only difficult and slow hiking in the forest in the dark, in Glacier National Park especially grizzly bears are more active at night by about a 10:1 ratio. Hiking 6 miles in such a situation may have taken them over 4-5 hours, putting them at the trailhead in the middle of the night. My guess is when they got moving at first light, were probably able to hike the full 6 miles in under 2 hours.
They were not clear on what Spot unit they had. Some are basic PLBs, if this was the case, once they hit the button, a signal is sent globally, and cannot be shut off or reversed. More modern Spot (and other units) have satellite communication, even if rudimentary. If this unit did, they definitely should have used it. This show glossed over this entire dilemma too quickly.
I like this Narrator. He is so energetic and so detailed, thanking him for telling this story.
Happened to me too.. My passion brought me in a dangerous situation where any mistake could've cost me dearly. And surely IT happened and there's just nothing you can do.. fear is a totally different thing when the stakes are very high.. i was disabled for months. Luckily i have a family and social network right there for me. It made a huge difference. I take serious measures now and warm up my fingers before playing guitar. I never want to spray my fingers again on that fret board.. it's hell.

It's amazing that he could climb up the face of that crevasse with a badly broken back. So many people came to his aid, and you could see how much it meant to him, especially that lady holding his hand.

Most people remember the pain so intensely.. however they don't remember being paralyzed and in a state of shock where often intense pain will make you silent..
In fact, it's important for people to just rub their chest, head, legs, and arms while holding their hand with the other hand..
I've been in a dozen situations where I was in shock or got the wind knocked out of me where I just wanted them to relax and feel a gentle touch rubbing my my body.. I always get angry when I can't talk and they are yelling if im alright as they can see If rocking or rolling back and forth..
They simply don't understand if I say something, I lose my attention of holding down vomiting which I have no oxygen to risk..
Everyone should never show fear, anxiety when treating someone in severe paid..
I believe that older lady who sat next to him, rubbed his hair, back, shoulders.. while holding his hand..
It's crazy we EMTs are trained in this.. they should and they should be paid much more money

Well, he got the excitement and danger he wanted. I am always amazed at the people who decide to go walkabout without notifying anyone of where they are going, the route they are going to take, and when they expect to return. Ted was lucky; lots of other people haven't been so lucky.
...and that's why I carry a satellite phone.

I've been going through a back issue for about 6 weeks and I just cringe at his situation. I know my back pain doesn't scratch the surface of what he's going through. Can't imagine.
Ted is so lucky hes not in a wheel chair like many people. Lucky his legs worked to climb out of there. I can't imagine if he fell again. 😢 he met AMAZING trained people that saved him. God bless all of them and Teds loved ones. ❤❤❤❤

I am happy he survived, all respect to him, I've heard people who found themselves in situations like this, ...(and someone with them)...they don't think they would've made it, if is wasn't for the other person, HE HAD TO GO THRU THIS ALONE
I think it is super lucky that he can walk. After the impact, the bone fragment was probably in his vertebrae the whole time he hiked down the mountain. At any moment, his injury could have gotten worse and just fall due to sudden paralysis. Man is lucky

@ bellarees - I’m happy you believe in God helping, but tremendously disheartened that God didn’t heal him. I would hate to go on with that horrific back injury and pain. Why can’t God do a complete job instead of a poor one. My mum always said to me “If you’re going to do something, do it properly, or not at all “ I agree with Mum. She was a wonderful person. If God allows anyone into heaven she should be there. Can’t wait to see you again Mum. I miss you everyday. The pain is unbearable mostly, what I am suffering as well as missing her. Please God have mercy on everyone. You say that you love us. Prove it too.🙏♥️

I had been watching the WONDER series for almost a year now, and I can honestly say straight to your eyes that Ted Porter is the most handsome guy that made an appearance on Wonder to tell his experience / story. . . OMG!. . .He can be a perfect co-host for Mr. Craig DeMartino. . . Am I correct, co-wonderers?

I paused this at 7:03 to comment. I've watched several of these survival stories with empathy for the survivors....I'm having a little trouble on this one. This was a grown man making some dire and consequential decisions. The two decisions that confound me the most are: him walking on a wet icy slippery slope and him not having warm enough clothing for the area. I'll never know the pull that drives this type of adventure.

I got the feeling the glacier he was climbing on was well within his comfort and experience level. It was only when he slipped that everything went wrong.

It's tempting to judge him for biting off more risk than he could chew. But he also made several good decisions, and had just enough planning, skill, knowledge, and determination to get himself out and get help.
Sorry but why would any “outdoorsman” attempt to descend a steep glacier without crampons? I’m no outdoorsman and even I wouldn’t attempt that! I’m truly happy that his lapse in judgment didn’t cost him his life! God knows I’ve had and I’m sure will have more stupid decisions in my own. After all, I’m only human to.

Lower back injuries are sporadic pain signals. He was feeling a 4 out of 10 when asked but could hardly move. Depending on the moves the pain increases. These injuries need time to heal. Doctors often recommend surgery, but these are sometimes unnecessary or even a bit harmful. The body can heal those ( though a lot of patience is required).

But the bad new is that we made up the bill for the medical cover and extraction using a helicopter, and the total amount sums up to USD 154.331 including taxes. How would you pay Sir? That’s so heartless to say. Yes it was a huge mistake climbing alone, he even admitted that. But you should have sympathy for all people and creatures. You shouldn’t have to “save” your sympathy, just be a decent human being.

Whats wrong with these people. You know you have to wear your boots. You don't do and fall near to death. Then wonder about dying. Experience hiker then does something stupid like this. Not that much experienced.
Some people find it horrible to live amongst ones own species, they keep telling how they looked forward to not being with people or answer calls or attend social gatherings or get to work...but such situations SHOULD TEACH EACH ONE OF US THAT WE ARE SAFE ONLY BECAUSE WE ARE LIVING WITH PEOPLE AROUND AND WITH US.

Anyone who ever hiked a little in such area, knows about the danger of this environment, having some required equipment and not using it is fact enough for his stupidity but worse, you never ever attempt a hike like this by yourself unless being on the run!

Doctors always say “if you don’t get the treatment right now you could die” lmao this guy stayed probably around 24 hours after his fall until surgery talkin bout right now or you could be paralyzed. I mean he even walked a couple miles after. Like nah they just say that
It's because your muscles can hold everything in place for awhile. People break their necks and don't notice right away. Doesn't mean it's not an emergency lol
