The one that stands out to me is, after over a decade of declaring "George Lucas r***ed my childhood" in the wake of the prequels, the Star Wars 'sequel trilogy' comes out, and suddenly they're "masterpieces not appreciated in their time" and "Kathleen Kennedy is ruining Lucas's vision" and blah blah blah.

Especially since the _exact same_ people were like, "Affleck can't be Batman. He was in that shitty Daredevil movie."
When: 1) I personally don't think Daredevil was bad as far as my memory serves. And 2) It's been at least 10 years since Daredevil. He's not the same person he was in 2013 when Batman v Superman was announced compared to 2003.

@@christopherb501 I do wonder if some of that comes down to age. Are the people defending the prequels mostly the ones who saw them first as kids? In ~10 years will there be a similar group claiming the latest Star Wars release is trash and the sequel trilogy was the greatest? It's possible, or we can help break the cycle by reminding people it's not a competition and you're allowed to like AND dislike different installments in a franchise AND people will have different opinions to yours AND that's okay.

“Being more ridiculously awesome than it has any right to be” has been Legends of Tomorrow’s miracle trick since Season 2. @@benwasserman8223 I quit the Arrowverse after Oliver died in Crisis and Mia's show got pre-cancelled. From what I've seen and heard in passing, it got more complicated and disappointing after that, with Ruby leaving Batwoman after one season and the majority of the founding shows having run their course. Now we're left with Superman and Lois, a show about one of Superman's Stangirls, and apparently, LOT is still chugging. My soul hurts. I wouldn't be averse to an HBOMAX series based on Mick's erotic novels, though.

@@seanwilkinson7431 I mean, it's okay if it's not your cup of tea or anything, but Superman & Lois is the best DC TV show I've ever seen and it swung for the fences right out of the gate, season 1! I mean, Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow weren't even half as good in their first seasons...heck, I tuned out of Legends of Tomorrow halfway through the first season. I'm glad I picked it up again later on though, because I love what Legends became when it dropped Vandal Savage and that arc's dreary seriousness like a hot plate.
Also, from what I've heard (so take this with a grain of salt) Ruby Rose got seriously hurt working on Batwoman. I can't blame her for a second for leaving because of that.

Andrew Garfield has been pretty clear on being a big spider-man fan and that getting the role meant a lot to him. He wasn’t the bad part in them and shows time and time again that on his part he got the chops to do Spider-Man justice.
Also I don’t think he views making ASM 1-2 a miserable experience. Based on what I recall from the interviews of that time he seemed most upset with the editing room.

    • @swanpride
      @swanpride 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

As usually Bob argues from his "Raimi Great, TAS an absolute failure" perspective, which leads him to overlook a few things. For starters, the Garfield was genuinely excited to play the role, and that this excitement shined through his performance, which is why it HAS been a discussion for a long time if he or McGuire were better (usually with a tentative "Garfield was the better Spiderman, McGuire the better Petter Parker agreement" - not that this is my view, mind you), until Holland came along and, to the anger of Raimi hardcore fans basically ended the discussion by a lot of people agreeing that he manages to offer the best of both.
Consequently Bob doesn't get that there are people who really wanted Garfield to have the chance to be Spider-man in a better received film, which is basically what happened now, hence the appetite has been wetted.
Affleck on the other hand...yeah, I can imagine which subset of the internetspace (I hesitate to say fandom) is now making a fuss around that.

I have one thing to say about that "Nostalgia Is A Brain-Worm" clip.
“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

Indeed, it isn't "love" when you can't accept that the thing you're fixated on is this goofy, whimsical trifle meant for an audience of eight-year-olds. After all, unless your name is Athena or Vainamoinen, you did not spring out of the womb a fully-formed adult. It's also worth noting that the events of the last few years, between the plague and an attempted overthrow of the government also plays havoc on our ability to handle everything. We also find ourselves with fewer tools available that we'd normally use to help make ourselves feel better. You're a movie fan (duh!) you can't go to the theatre and see a movie. Something you do to relax on a lousy day.
So, Bob, please please give yourself a break. It's bad enough to feel angry/frustrated and sad at where the events of the last few years have messed up your plans. Don't add to how bad you're feeling by adding guilt over how bad you're feeling.
And also know that what you do matters. I've gotten way WAY into comics over the pandemic and it's largely due to your videos. I've been lucky enough that my local comic store is staffed by fantastic humans. So our weekly visit/pick up has been a really bright spot the last few years. I've found amazing writers like Tom Taylor, Kieron Gillen, Tom King. In fact Tom King's Superman Up in the Sky and Heroes in Crisis have been books that have helped me process the trauma of the last few years. And Taylor's Nightwing is slowly helping me come to terms with my uncle's death.
I'm reading (and loving!) Far Sector by N.K. Jemesin.I have a pull list. None of which would be true if not for Comics Are Weeiirrrdddd!
Your videos have helped me develop my critical eye when watching movies (and read comics) too. Which has made those experiences more fulfilling.

I never wanted Batfleck, and I still don't, but I suppose it could be said that -- like Andrew Garfield in those awful Spiderman movies -- perhaps he didn't get a fair shake. Coming right after the Nolan trilogy, which I feel really took its time building up and establishing Batman/Bruce as a character with depth and believability (compared to other super hero movies anyhow), in comes Ben Affleck like "Hey, it's me! You know, Batman! You know who I am, so why bother with any set-up or origin story? Let's just jump right in and pretend this is normal!"
Like, I know the last thing anyone needed was yet another reboot re-telling of the same character all over again, but jumping right into a "new Batman" without the due diligence of developing how this guy was different and what made him interesting felt cheap and unearned. Plus, we all knew this was only happening because DC just wanted a cash cow movie franchise simply because Marvel had one, and they NEEDED a Batman for that to work.

Anywhoo, I hated the Amazing Spiderman movies too, but Andrew was GREAT, and I loved the good vibes and heart felt praise they gave him in the movie (that "amazing" bit was so good). I felt bad that it felt like he was tossed aside when they had competent people making Spiderman movies. It was like he was finally getting his dues, but fickle fate had other plans.
This was a great vid Bob. I had a number of good chuckles at this one, and while there are a few points here and there I don't fully agree with, there's a lot of great food for thought here. As much as Bob disliked the Amazing duology, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone were honestly the better part of those films. For all of their other issues (mediocre or just plain bad villans, odd pacing and bad casting ; once again we have Dane Dahan sucking all the air out of the room - so glad Hollywood finally figured out that kid was not the next Leonardo DiCaprio). I always thought Garfield and Stone had Far better chemistry together and Tobey Mcguire and Kirsten Dunst ever did. Sure, it was great to see Garfiled in the newest Spider-film. But he got his big moment of redemption, much like others from the earlier franchises did in that film. All three Spider-men got some excellent closure, and thats a hell of a lot more than many superhero characters get.

But then Covid hit and I not only had to leave my job because of reasons but I had to put my plans to get out more on hold... You shouldn't have to feel bad about feeling sad and angry over all this.
And on the subject of the actual video. Yeah. I agree with you. Fans just need to let stuff go. I was actually thinking this earlier today in regards to Star Wars and the fans constant demands to declare the sequel trilogy an alternate timeline and reinstate the post Return of the Jedi Legends continuity. My opinions on Ben Affleck in the DCEU:
    1. If he wants to abandon this sinking ship, let him go.
    2. That said, he was fine as Batman
    3. In fact, his performance was the least offensive thing in Batman v, Superman and Justice League.
Why I hate it every time a new actor plays Batman? Because I have to watch his parents get gunned down yet again! Say what you will about the MCU Spiderman reboot, Marvel did not force me to watch Uncle Ben die once again.

I read my first Spiderman comic book about 50-years ago, and even then I knew the importance of friends and family to the story of Peter Parker.
Perhaps Marvel does get a pass, bit it would be because even the weakest MCU offerings -- the Spiderman movies for example -- are usually superior to anything we can find in the DCEU. A bad MCU movie is the exception, but bad DCEU movies are the norm.

A lot of people still arguing in favor of another Andrew Garfield Spider-Man film are coming at this like "Well he enjoyed being Spider-Man! Why not give him another chance to be Spider-Man in a movie of his own that's good?" One, because it's Sony. Sony will fuck it up. Even Venom is only loved by people in a sort of ironic way in that it's so terrible they actually find it charming. (I didn't, but whatever) Trying to make this shit work again because the actor is a fanboy is forgetting that's he's not the director! He's an actor and he's gotta work with the material he's given and Sony's material, frankly, sucks.
Two, just because Andrew got a raw deal is not an excuse to try again. Lots of actors get raw deals over roles they were excited for. It's sad, but it happens. Garfield got to come back and be Spider-Man in a good movie apparently now, and ger closure apparently. You've gotten your third movie regardless. Anymore would just be redundant and he's not exactly crying over the fact he didn't get to be in a good Spider-Man movie either. He's moved on, why don't you?
This isn't really about which Spider-Man is better, it's just silly at this point. I know you all think you're doing Andrew a favor, but I don't think he cares nearly as much as all of you do. And frankly, saddling him with any of Sony's frankly garbage ideas for their sad remnants of a Spider-Man Cinematic Universe is just doing him a disservice. Let NWH be his swan song and way to resolve what was left hanging. You don't need a third movie in a failed series to prove to everyone Andrew wasn't the reason they failed, mainly because no one seems to think he was!

I really dislike this new wave of fanboy entitlement that has come about, as far as I can tell, from the DC fanboys who couldn't let go of the belief that DC would release a great film that would 'win' against Marvel and the MCU somehow managing to complain the Snyder Cut into being made. It's led to a level of entitlement not just to media made to their tastes, not just to the success of that media, but an entitlement to relitigate failed projects into successes It was bad enough when a film came out bad and fanboys insisted on 'proving' that it was good actually and you disliked it for bad-people reasons. Now, they don't just fantasise about the theoretical perfect version of a failed film, but demand that it somehow be dragged into reality, secret Sherlock episode style.
Why admit your expectations have been thwarted and let go, when you can insist that films that fail your own unrealistic expectations go back and try again and again until they pass?

    • @johnathonhaney8291
      @johnathonhaney8291 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I blame auteur theory a bit for this one. They saw all these old films that failed later become revered classics, so they decide that's what their faves HAVE to be. There's just one small problem: it's not actually up to their little cult to decide that. The larger audience has to get there on their own. Nor do they understand that constantly bringing up their faves is making people LESS inclined to hear them out. It's the worst excesses of drug pushing mixed those with evangelism.
