My Genuine Concern: Reusable Canning Lids & Gaskets or NOT?

  • DISCLAIMER: I have sincere, legitimate questions, and if you're a canner.....you should too. These are my opinions and thoughts. I am just voicing them here under my first amendment right to do so. Let me know your thoughts down below. And if you purchased these non reusable gaskets with your lid purchase in 2021, do you still have them? Did you contact Harvest Guard for a replacement? Did they notify you of the issues? I would love to know. Thank you, God Bless and I sincerely wish Brad the best of luck and hope any new ownership treats their customers well and is successful.

Yep. I'm one who expects 6-8 uses to actually be 6-8 uses! I would not know a good gasket from a bad one. I bought them for the first time in 2021.

This!!!!! THIS!!!!!!! This is my concern!!!!! He makes a pretty huge assumption that people would figure it out on their own. They won’t if they trust you and trust what they believe they purchased from you. 🤦‍♀️💔 so worrisome.

And I can regularly but never have used the reusable lids. I bought them in case I couldn't get the other ones. But I was thrilled they would last a long time. I wouldn't know either how the gaskets are supposed to be use after use.

@@CherieNorquay I did the same and sent a bunch to my daughter who is a new canner. Fortunately, I accidentally also ordered from Tattler as they were going to be delivered quicker. I thought I had canceled the HG. Both boxes came within a week of each other.

These are very sincere questions that we should all be asking, thank you for asking them on the consumers' behalf!! I'm concerned by what the email said and the approach that Harvest Guard has taken. Why aren't the 40,000 customers being notified of the deficit in product quality? Why is he selling addresses instead of letting all of his customers know. He already knows who bought the lesser product. Thank you for not just taking the bait of clout of being an "influencer" and instead asking questions that really matter. This is FOOD SECURITY we are talking about. Hard earned dollars that go less and less far each day.

Time for a class action lawsuit! In Canada we have a ministry of consumer relations where one can file grievances etc against companies who falsely advertise . I think those who have been sold a half truth and wasted money should contact lawyers because if it were reversed…these companies would sue you in a heartbeat. Business is business. Holding companies accountable is something all of us should do!

Thank you for this very informative video and being an advocate for us. I purchased some tattler reusable lids and used a few as a test as the instructions are different from what I'm used to. I regularly check all my canned goods (monthly) for any signs of damage (store bought) or broken seals (home canned). As home preservers and pantry stockers, it is a really important step to follow up this way.

The truth is that Harvest Guard did tell customers about changing suppliers and has replaced SOME of the faulty items. The problem is that they have not recalled and replaced all of the faulty gaskets.
I opened a jar with the faulty gasket last week and rather than knowing there was a problem, I figured it was a fluke. Now what I’m hearing is that the huge amount of jars I canned in 2021 & 2022 probably don’t have reusable gaskets and are likely at risk of seal failure. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BRINGING THIS TO LIGHT.

Thank you so very much for watching out for all of us! Your points are so valid and poignant. None of what HS says makes sense to me and seems to be doing a fast one on us unsuspecting and trusting consumers. Why would he only include 3 one time use gaskets when the others were 6 to 8 uses. Reducing the cost by 15 percent doesn’t make up for losing the 3 to 5 more uses that were part of the original gaskets. I pray no one gets ill or worse from these gaskets possibly failing. God Bless You!

Exactly!!!!! The lack of transparency, honesty and accountability is a big red flag for me. Glad to see he changed his tune yesterday evening and is offering a choice now but the integrity is lacking. We will see if he honors his customers and makes it right. He should have done that back in 2020. How can you be dumbfounded at the lack of reusability when you knew the entire time you never ordered the product to be reusable in the first place. Bait and switch. Red flag. That’s a hard NO for me. Shady.

Heather, I agree with you 100%. I’ve been canning for nearly 50 years. I remember my learning journey. There is no way I would have known the difference between a reusable gasket and a non-reusable one. I did purchase some Harvest Guard flats when lids were so scarce a couple of years ago, and those were fine. But, knowing what we know about the Harvest Guard reusable lids, I would not purchase them.
I do have a gross of Tattler lids in stock, and I have no issues with them. I also have a large (but dwindling) stock of Ball lids, as I usually buy 2-3 years in advance of when I will need them. When I restock lids this summer, I will be investing mostly in Ball and Tattlers, with maybe a small batch of the ForJars lids to run an experiment. Thank you for always looking out for us. There is a reason you are the Canning Queen! Much love to you and your family. ❤

    @respectrealperson290 ปีที่แล้ว +2

This is an important differentiation your sharing, and I'm glad your siding with the consumers. Instead of 3 one time use gaskets the company should at minimum make them 4 for the normal price of one, clearly package as one time use. I won't use plastic lids, and only use one time use tin and rubber lids. I've never had a problem canning with those. I can't imagine changing my routine to plastic lids ever. I won't even use plastic in a microwave, or a dishwasher because the plastic breaks down no matter what the manufacturers say. That's why new born babies are now being born with plastic particles in their tissues. It's also going into our river systems despite filtration systems. PVC pipes used in plumbing in homes do break down with chemicals used in fumigation, and is another cause of plastic particles in humans and wildlife. People were better off using cast iron skillets to cook, glass dishes, and pottery dishes. The coating on many pans now are very toxic when they are scraped causing the coating to fragment into food. Other countries are much more ethically progressive in being truthful about the health consequences of cook ware products now. I am very thankful your making folks who can their own food aware of products with issues.

I agree! I got rid of all of our plastic and switched to glass. I rarely use my
Microwave anymore. But i also feel like they have contaminated everything at this point. Its hard to escape. Our poor children and grand children 🥺

Thank you so much for this information! I wasted my money buying this brand thinking i was being smart and could reuse these. When the seals stretched and curled I thought I’d done something wrong. ( it was my fault ). They lied by omission, which is still a lie.

THIS!!!!! 😩💔🤦‍♀️ This is exactly what my fear was!!!!!!! And to be so presumptuous that new canners wouldn’t be able to not know, angered me.

Thank you Heather for this vital information. I purchased some Tattler reusable lids during the lid shortage and needed more but they weren’t available so I went to Harvest Gard. I haven’t used any of the Harvest Gard lids yet and now I don’t think I want to. I would really like to send them back and get a refund. Then I could purchase more Tattlers. This is really upsetting to me. Thank you again. God Bless and Lots of Love ❤

Thank you, Heather !!! This company should sell them as single use lids because that's what they have. The ball is in their court. Their error, their cost.

Thank you Heather for the great information and for you to go the extra steps to help us all as canners learn more about the products we are using. I got sucked into buying HG when I thought it would be the answer when supplies were so scarce to find. I do regret ever purchasing them. I reuse them only for a lid of a jar that needs refrigeration after opening. I had way to many failures after weeks of being in storage where they came unsealed. Hard lesson to learn. Money down the drain on both purchasing and the food wasted. I won't use them again to try and can with.

Hmmm....i must have a mix of gaskets. Only one recently was stretched oddly after use and I'm quite sure none of my gaskets have been used more than a couple times so far. I've had no jars fail/spoil on rhe shelf. I agree that the website should be updated with new info. I will continue to use the lids/gaskets and inspect them as I knew I'd need to as the white lids have a lifetime use but the gaskets were meant to have limited use, reusable 6-8 times. Truly, the one that was stretched out was extremely obvious. I'm more inclined to be upset at the shutdowns forced upon us all which so devastatingly impacted businesses, individuals, mental health, etc. The company should be forthright about the Harvest Guard lids, yet I'm not ready to discontinue their use. Happy canning.

    • @TheKneadyHomesteader

Absolutely! And as long as you know. I mark my gaskets with a line every time i use it so i know how many uses i have left. And don’t get me started on my soapbox about the shut downs. 😆 i live in michigan where they banned the sales of garden seeds and supplies as well as paint and kids clothing! While our governor locked us down she flew to florida for vacation! I definitely have my rants on all of that. 😆 God Bless and Happy Canning!

Such a shame! This guy is about to find out the hard way why you test and take the “luxury” of time to do it, or recall and refund/replace- this is how a business ends up with class action lawsuits. At the least, for false advertising/selling a defective product/etc. at worst, for illness or even loss of life when someone gets sick and passes from using a defective gasket 😢 This is so sad! Thank you and bless you for standing up for the canning community, especially beginners who might not know better ❤
