Very interesting! I've been enrolled in a vitamin D study for a while. My blood is tested twice a year. Through that I was able to tweak the supplements I take. I'm now taking 5000 IU gels 4 times a week.
My doctor once added a vitamin D test to regular blood work and it was taken within days of my semi-annual D test. The results of both tests were close.
I've been aiming to get my numbers between 50 and 60.

[01:40] The U-shaped curve is old data.
[01:58] Routine testing of Vitamin D levels is not recommended. The tests may be unreliable and misleading.
[02:47] Recommended dose is (at least) 2,000 IU (50 µg).
[03:23] Overdose may occur over 10,000 IU (250 µg) a day.
[03:36] Overweight, obese and elderly people may need more.
[03:53] Again, no need for the average person to test and retest…
[04:02] The (US) Institute of Medicine Recommendation is 600 IU to 800 IU.
[04:11] Official recommendations are all over the map, ranging from just 200 IU a day, all the way up to 10,000 IU a day.

“Because routine measurement of serum 25OHD is not recommended, physicians are provided guidance on the recommended vitamin D intake to reach desirable vitamin D levels in over 97.5% of the population. Such recommendations run from as low as 200 IU/day in some European countries, to as much as 4000 to 10,000 IU/day, for the Vitamin D Council.[3]”

Very good observation. This is why I believe this whole Vit D thing is just one big pharma sell to "health oriented" people. The sun doesn't want my money and it gives me what I need, so I'll just take that instead of paying for pills and relying on bad measurements.

I take 5000 I.U. D-3 daily. I get sunlight exposure, and also eat things that are supposed to be somewhat rich in the vitamin, and yet I score 45-47 on my tests for it for over a year now. That 1 time 50,000 D-2 yielded no real progress. So I switched to D-3 over the counter.

    • @username-yn5yo
      @username-yn5yo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

there are two different units for measuring vitamin d, one is ng/ml and one is nmol/l . it makes a big difference which one you have, because 45-47ng/ml is actually a very healthy range (about 120-130nmol/l) Actually a bit higher than it is necessary, and considering the large doses that you are taking i think a confusion in this scenario is quite likely.

    • @username-yn5yo

different guidelines. indigenous populations of aFrica usually have about 100-110 nmol/liter, in my opinion that is optimal for disease prevention and optimal ehalth. you do get a lot of the benefits with 80nmol/liter, below that amount you will not have adequate levels for ehalth and well being.

I think the very poor accuracy in serum 25OHD3 test results is attributed to negligence in blood sample handling/storage time and/or wide storage temperatures between different labs. The same sample sent out to a 100 different labs may have the same samples tested on a different date. More delays may result in more degradation of the 25OHD3 in the blood samples. Pick a good reliable lab that handle blood samples professionally and test it at the shortest time possible after blood collection and their laboratory practice has to be certified by the best and trusted accreditation guidelines specific to that country.

More not always better when it comes to vitamin D
    Bourne Auguste
Dr. Bourne Auguste, Clinical Fellow in the Home Dialysis Program, Nephrology, examined the 54-year-old man who took high doses of vitamin D over two years, resulting in kidney failure. (Photo: Dr. Bourne Auguste)
An unusual case study from the Nephrology Clinic of Dr. Joanne Bargman at Toronto General Hospital (TG) has shown that excessive amounts of vitamin D can lead to kidney failure.
The case study describes a 54-year-old man who had been prescribed a high dose of vitamin D by a naturopath. He did not have any prior fractures or documented vitamin D deficiency.
Not finding the specific brand prescribed by the naturopath, the patient substituted another one that had a higher concentration of Vitamin D. Over two years, he took eight to 12 drops of vitamin D daily - for a total dose of 8,000 to 12,000 units a day.
    Related to this story:
CBC Radio Interview with Dr. Bargman
Read story in US News & World Report
He now has kidney failure due to high blood levels of calcium leading to deposits of calcium in the kidney tissue. His kidney function is 34 per cent, compared to normal functioning at more than 60 per cent.
According to Osteoporosis Canada, doses up to 2,000 units daily are safe. They recommend vitamin D doses from 800 to 2,000 units daily for older adults and those at high risk for osteoporosis.
The case is reported in the April 8 edition of CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal) by Drs. Bourne Auguste and Joanne Bargman, Nephrology, TG, and Dr. Carmen Avila-Casado, Pathology, UHN.
"Patients should recognize that vitamin D is a medication, and can be associated with risks, particularly when taken at large doses," says Dr. Auguste, Clinical Fellow in the Home Dialysis Program, Nephrology, and the first author of the case report. "More is not better in this example."
Symptoms of vitamin D toxicity can include: high blood pressure, confusion and kidney stones.
Dr. Auguste also points out that not everyone might need vitamin D supplements, and that low-risk patients should speak to their physicians about why they are considering taking it.

In both McDougals and T Colin Campbells publications they don't recommend Vit D supplementation and advocate some sunlight exposure. Mentioning that the Vitamin D in pills is not the same and the endogenous Vitamin D we produce and supplementation could even increase the risk of cancer? So in any of the Vitamin D videos does he address the comment last video about not being sure whether there is causation or whether it's just correlation? He mentioned that we don't really know whether vitamin D is a result of good health or whether we get good health from high vitamin D (in which case supplementation would help). Seems like it was glossed over and just assumed Vitamin D supplementation was helpful?

It measures my heartrate and steps. I am deficient in vitamin D.
Since i am taking vitamin D (3000 IU/ day), i don't if this is related to my vit. D intake, but i noticed my resting heartrate went from 71 to 65 in about two weeks...remarkable (i am pretty athletic and i have not been practicing any sports last months..i feel somewhat calmer now...i sleep better and longer, but my body feels jittery. Weird)

You can go to your own doctor and discuss your findings and see what dosage YOU need for YOUR current level in order to get to the optimal levels.
      Best wishes.

2,000I.U./day at least or 4,000-5,000I.U./day if you're obese. What dr. Greger doesn't mention is that you dont' have to take this daily, you can take once a week. So, if you're slim take 14,000I.U. on any given day of the week, but once, or 28,000-35,000I.U., if you're obese. If you think is too much take the weekly amount in two sesions. Explanation: the decay of vit.D3 is slow, so you won't run out of stock until next week.

      zukodude487987
30mcg D3 = 1,200I.U D3. Imagine that for a white guy doing sun bath (in swim suit) after 25-30 minutes naturally produces around 12,000I.U.-14,000I.U. D3(300mcg-350mcg D3). 30mcg is not 600% daily intake. That's bulshit.

What was the level that your testing showed? Do you know how many doctors don't study on this and don't really know what is a good level. If you were between 60 and 80 that is more the level that is thought to be the best. Mine was 80 at one test when taking 50K a week and the doctor said it was too high. So, it was just fine and I was and still am very healthy.

Mario I have never heard that B12 should be taken after a meal when protein metabolism is increased. Maybe this is only necessary with small amounts of B12? 2500 mcg (which is what Dr. Greger recommends) is quite a lot of B12, and I remember him mentioning that this B12 saturation at this dose is easily absorbed without any special attention to details like timing, food combining, etc.
