I've been track standing out of need in red lights but had never actually watched instructional videos and your video showed me many things I've been doing wrong! Thanks! And it's a 5 year old video haha Awesome! I would position the crank flat, and push back and forth with the wheel turned. Even the advice of staring at something is awesome, it's used a lot in Yoga to keep balance in a pose, stare at a fixed point. Can't wait to go out and try this!
Probably this is the first video that actually teaches how to do track stand. Couple of tips that helped me are : 1. Keep your eyes fixed on some object in front of you. Particularly I have observed, the smaller the object the more it helps. 2. Starting with going in circles really helped. Now I'm able to do track stand on the incline and hopefully will get it on the flat and later on downhill as well. Thank you very much.
@@suzaku3573 To be honest, I have never had problems with my motivation, ...the problem became my left palm as it started hurting after 2 weeks of very ambitious trackstand practicing. Then when it the hurt had not disappeared for another months, a physician said that not more practice like that. Since then I am glad when I can go for biking (or other exercises) and if there is not immediate repeating hurt problems with my left palm. Too much motivation and not knowing my own relatively old body resulted in not practicing trackstanding, less mountain biking and more road cycling as there is less pain in my left palm. Hopefully, my mistakes can serve as lessons for somebody else to be more clever with practicing and accomplishing trackstand mission.
Definitely gonna bookmark and keep watching this video. This is a skill I have never been able to figure out on my own and this seems like it makes a lot of sense.
Nicely done video, one of the better ones I've seen to help learn to track stand. What I think makes it better than some is your clear explanations and tips. Thank you, I'm sure I will pick up this useful skill a bit quicker thanks to your video.
im shore he was being sarcastic likein his fixie points blogs .. or maybe not...hay! dont let me put you off ... but have you heard about the crap stand? i left a full instructions comment somewhere above you.. im high as f**k so i have no ... err you know wat i mean/?/... never had it to begin with;/
*Looked at a lot of options for getting my **Latest.Bike** . Great find in SAVA. Super light, nice components, really good value as it comes with many options only found in much higher priced bikes.*
Hi Zach! could you do a video about jumping, please? when I can't circle around a pothole I just manage to put up the front wheel. when it's the turn of the rear wheel... I know I have to use the straps but those pedals are moving.. I would also like to jump on a sidewalk instead of stopping and starting again. Thank you so much!
Yes it happend to me too... It just clicked in my head.. but i think it help me alot when that moment my bike rolled backwards i realy try hard to pedal forward.. that is why it will help you whrn u practice on an inclined area.. sorry for my english
I`d like to see a video about overcoming the obstacles without coasting on a fixie: how to jump over the potholes, how to do drops, ride down the stairs etc. To be able to do all these things is the only reason why I stay with freehub.
Love your videso ! Make a video about how to look out for your ball bearings, or in general what are signs of good bearings. I have a rythmic clicking noise in my inner bearing of my pedals. I think it is because I have no sealed bearings and I didn`t look out for them enough
Hi Zach, great video with detailed explanation. Have you got any tips for the non-fixed gear rider? I feel like the back and forth movement is critical. Cheers!
That all comes down to personal preference and geographical location. Also knee health. I’ve be tough on my poor ole knees and now I ride freewheel. I also don’t care about “fixie points”. But that being said. When I lived in the flat city of Norfolk va, fixie was easy and not so hard on the knees. I think everyone should try both. Life’s too short to be close minded. Just ride.
Cool videos Zach! How about one on riding fixed for the first time? I'm considering flipping from my freewheel to the fixed gear, some pointers would be great.
True about 1 day just being able 2 do it. I was instinctively doing it badly at red lights and failing half the time and coming out of my clips, then I focused on doing it for a couple weeks and realised BAM! one day I was the balance fukn master
Are you an ambi-track stander? I can only do left foot forwards atm, and struggling to learn right foot forward. Strange because i'm right-side dominant usually
So I'm just want to try fixed gear bikes for some reason but on the second thought it may costs me a lot of money, can I please get some tips or something on how to start a cheap fixie?
Make a video about getting your feet into straps/cages on fixed. I know it's a practice makes perfect thing I just want a few tips to get it sooner rather a few slow meters down the road.
You talked about the chain in this video and said that we mustn't have it to tight so we need it a bit longer. I have a thight chain and i cant skid even if i practice everyday, is that the reason why i cant skid? Because of the tight chain? (Please answer my question)
I am right handed and my dominant food is right but when i do track stand i am better at turning the front wheel to left and the front paddle to left which is kinda opposite cause people says it would be easier to turn the front wheel and front paddle to right if you are right handed or your dominant food is right but for me it is easier to turn left than right evan though i am right handed ..is this common?
How do you track stand riding clipless? I can track stand when I'm on my cages, but when I'm riding clipless, it just feels harder to do. It looks like you unlock your atac pedals when you track stand.
***** I have road shoes and the sole is carbon fiber and very slippery. I could not unclip and then track stand. I have to track stand while clipped in. Any ways to get better at track standing with clips? I practice but I keep falling because I'm clipped in.
Yingcong Zhang I think it's all about confidence. I just learned today on my Crank brothers double shot 3 pedals. They're platform on one side, and clipless on the other. I figured it out on the platform side, and once I could hit the stand pretty much at will, I flipped the pedals and went clipless. It's weird, but it's just like Zach says. One day you just get it. It's like learning to ride a bike in the first place. Best of luck to you!
I think having chain slack is pretty bad for trackstanding as it creates a deadzone where you don't have control. With a tight chain you can stay perfectly still in the sweet spot without rolling back and forth. Two inches of slack sounds like a lot anyway.
I learned how to track-stand on a mountain bike by hovering my hand above a metal bollard to catch myself when I lost balance. You can learn without fear of falling.
fixed cog way easierI assume but freewheels are harder basically when in motion u lose all semceoffallin side ways because u can belittle but little and itl keep it up but one good for clip ons rather than reg its more involving
The success of a track stand is inversely proportional to the number of witnesses present and is logarithmic if the witnesses are hotties. Saw this theory on the internet.
One of my friends didn't know how to do no hands, but he learned it in 2 days. Just let go of the handlebars until you want to grab it back again so that you don't fall. Keep trying that. I learned it in 5 mins, first day i got my fixie.
Juan Rios Ran 48x15 for years. Liked the top end. Sold it when I moved from USA to NZ. My new fg is 48x18. It's solid for rollers near Wellington. Will go back to 48x15 once I adapt to the terrain here.
Wait this isn’t natural? I do it just to not get off the bike and have a good launch waiting for the light that being said skidding does not come naturally to me...
help me build a good bike haha i have a 6ku and it obviously isnt the best and i want a build that is decent to work with. I just ride for fun and i am just trying to explore and chill by riding, which is an overall good experience. i want a build that is decent but not too flashy to the point where it is unnecessary. biking is really fun by itself lol
Dai 大妖精 during match sprints, the front rider will try and force the back rider to the front because during a match sprint it is better to be at the back, they will track stand to try and force the other rider to the front. look up match sprints on youtube
Try holding onto a fence, wall or bollard to learn your bikes geometry and acclimate to its center of gravity. Then hover your hand near the wall to learn how to balance without help. You will be able to learn how to track stand and become comfortable with your bike without the risk of falling.
"People are judgmental and can ruin your focus" Legit!
None of your videos ever disappoint.
Lol "all of your friend"
Trackstanding came to me just like you said, one day it suddenly clicked and i could do it!
Kevin Oei
I laughed when I heard him say that, too. Pretty thorough explanation. Gonna give it a go.
me too but found its more difficult at a red light at schools end (its hot work trying to be cool) never going that way home again :/..

The bit about it not having any sort of steady progression is motivating actually. Just keep at it and it'll come to us eventually!
Probably this is the first video that actually teaches how to do track stand. Couple of tips that helped me are :

... I learned how to do a track stand sitting down. Took me 1-2 months to do. I never gave up. I did it once everyday for fun.
your comment is very helpful and inspirational...doing it every day for 25 min hopefully in 2 months I will reach my trackstand goal...

love ur vids could u make a vid on slowing down on a downhill.
keep it up with the vids
Gustavo Raygoza Skidding
Lots of muscle power lol
Use your brakes.
your house is huge
Great video, good advice and conveyed with brevity. Also like your approach to safety, front and rear brakes and wearing a helmet! 😂
hey Zach I really like the video. could you make a video between clipless over toe straps
Already really good at this i just like watching this guys vids
Great vid as always. super entertaining and informative. keep up the good work!
Great video as usual. This just what I needed. Btw thanks for the shoutout. Kudos!
Finally, a good track stand vid!
Its actually very easy took me only few trys. Thanks!

Pinoy ka pala sir , nice . Lagi kita pinapanuod mahilig din ako sa fixie ,
Very useful tips!
Is there a gear ratio to make a track stand more easily? Like a 46-15 have 15 skid patch and a 46-16 have only 8, is that matters?
Hi Zach, great video with detailed explanation. Have you got any tips for the non-fixed gear rider? I feel like the back and forth movement is critical. Cheers!
Thanks zach took me 30 min to get this
What to wear when commuting on rainy days? How about a video on that? :D
Love your videos bro and nice bike too
THANK YOU! I needed this!
It would be very nice of you to make a video how to tape the handlebar :)
so everyone’s gonna ignore how he has two locks on his pants ?
A few years late, but great video! 😃
Maybe a vid on why most people prefer to ride fixed than freewheel or vice versa?
Most people? Most people use cassettes

Thanks. I've already felt the toe overlap, but I guess it'll only get worse once i go fixed.

True about 1 day just being able 2 do it. I was instinctively doing it badly at red lights and failing half the time and coming out of my clips, then I focused on doing it for a couple weeks and realised BAM! one day I was the balance fukn master

Hevlikn Ilunar .. i do..

nice mirror brah
do I also need to carry three locks to practice ? ^^
I felt the ramp made it harder because you are fighting gravity whenever you need to stop a backwards roll.
Can only fixies do this or can any single gear bikes?
Can you do some tricks? If yes, could you do tutorials?
Do you ever slide anymore since your daily has brakes?

Hi, Zach! What size tire is here? 28C?
Ha ha.. all of your friend. I caught that
Great video man. Can you track stand with a freewheel?
Adrián Castañeda well, most of the time you can, but traffic lights with a negative incline are not practical because you can't go backwards.
Adrián Castañeda yea its not hard cause freewheels have brakes
In everyday life scenarios, do you always need to look for an incline to trackstand?
On a fixie you can do it on flat ground. With a freewheel, you need some inclination, but sometimes even the camber of the road is enough.
Is track stand only be possible on the "uphill" road?
No, uphill just makes it a lot easier.
I always lean the bike over a little and I lean the other way lol
Nice
hey what kind of helmet are you wearing?
Got it in 15minutes!!!
I used to practice track standing strapped in and I ate shit more times than I can count.
My chainring/cog combo is 48x18. Should I make it shorter? Say 44x18?
Jeff Jones you should try 48x 15
Don't do 44x18 you'll be spinning you quick also 48x18 is pretty bad
Juan Rios

no probs man
im right handed but i first learned and im better at using my left foot forward. I skid right foot forward. im a weird rider
can i want your pedal name ?
Is that a fixie? So much easier
Can you track stand on a freewheel bike?
On a very slight uphill it doesn't even require brakes. But normally you would want to feather the rear brake :)
Bodhi Choy yea i can do it easily on my mountain bike
Is 'track' stand for velodromes use?
