  • Learn how to trackstand indefinitely! This video is a trackstand tutorial that goes beyond the typical basics of the track stand - it is for riders of every cycling background, not just cross country or mtb trials.
In this video, we cover the elements and theory of what makes a good trackstand, and then I take you through each step to set you up for long term success with your balance on the bike. After I'm done breaking it down piece by piece, I get on the bike and demonstrate the full motion while talking you through each step. At the end of the tutorial, I'll also share one of my favorite track stand "flexes" that you can learn and implement easily.

Just in case any noobs find it helpful…For step 1, day 1, I found not looking straight down at the front wheel and more towards the horizon really helped with basic balance. I spent the first 30 mins just finding that balance since it’s a really narrow zone where you can make corrections that will allow you to stay up. tip: find that pedal pressure on the outside (front) foot early to counter inside tipping vs using upper body movements. A little goes a long way. I also found that if you start falling to the outside, you won’t have many (easy/beginner) options to save it - a quick turn of the handle bars and half turn of the cranks to completely switch sides is what I needed to do.

Track stand without something to press against makes so much more sense after watching this. It just clicked once you mentioned the brake is replacing the . Most videos just say use some brakes, rock back and forth, blah blah. My braking was pretty much random (probably: ack, off-balance, brake!), made things worse. Now that I know it is specifically front brake only, and apply like when you would expect your wheel to hit the immovable object and proceed as normal from there, it's so much easier. Could stand against a wall forever, but was wobbling all over and constantly rolling a bit forward (and most often severely tipped to one side) to keep balance without a wall/object to push against previously. Soooo much more control now. Just needed that analogy for things to click in my brain I guess. Thanks! [2017 Jitsie mod, 40+ age group, can teach old dogs new tricks]

Same here. I learned the track stand in a sport called cycleball but with those bikes you can pedal backwards.
On a small slope I feel like I could trackstand forever with my mtb because I can roll back because of gravity. Even with 1 hand I could stand forever.
But as soon as I get to a flat surface I lock my brakes but still wiggle forward by time until I fall.
Definitely have to try this out in my next session! Without shifting the weight back it's almost impossible to trackstand...

I started riding last year. And ride everyday.
Right now my only form of transport.
For health, money saving reasons, and just to get out and live.
I started doing this a few months ago. And thought it was so cool. I would just try to ride as slow as possible. Put my gear set in a very low gear, then apply just enough pressure to my brakes. With slight pressure in the brakes and my gears low, i would just pedal through the slight brake pressure causing me to keep the pedals constantly loaded. I ride mostly in the city and now i hardly have to put my feet down. I can stay, "dynamically loaded for enough time that the red lights will switch and then i can just continue on. I think it's pretty cool, and i think the drivers seeing it are a little amazed at it too.
Somewhere along the way, with TH-cam i learned about this constant loading principle.
    🤘✌️🚴‍♂️❤️.

Hey! So I watched your track stand video last winter and started practicing. I could not get it figured out. Maybe should have braced my front tire on something like you suggested but I didn't usually have anything I could use so I just kept at it. Then somehow last week it just clicked and went from impossible to so darn easy I can do it forever even with my 3 month old puppy yanking on the leash! I'm over the moon excited! Thanks for all the time you put into your videos because they really help!
I gotta say, I don't think I realized just how much I needed to turn the handlebars sideways because I really cranked them around one night and it all just clicked. Also, thick grass seems to really help. And I can do it on either side and even move my pedals a bit without falling over. Who says old dogs can't nail new tricks!

I'm at the stage where my trackstands are really useful on the trail, and have helped me make a leap in terms of what I can do with rocking and hopping, but I'm not at the stage of doing it so long I get bored yet, so the back wheel 'rev' is now my motivation goal to get to the next stage!! :D It just looks so Fun. For some reason I thought I'd need to be comfortable enough doing a stoppie (coming in with speed) before showing off like that, but from a trackstand is a goal that feels more within reach!

Had to come back and say thanks again! Being a creature of habit, I'd been using both brakes/brakes too often when I wouldn't have needed to at all, so it finally clicked that that's why I was often spontaneously trackstanding on the trail better than in practice where I was thinking about stopping and trackstanding 😆 Two practice sessions into your front brake or no brakes recommendation and I'm into almost forever territory for inclines with no brakes, one hand, etc! Also can't wait to try some up and overs after your video today. Have definitely been guilty of stalling myself with the brakes on stuff pushing 18"+. Had no idea it was more of a body stall I was seeing ppl do once up, and not active braking!

I’m just about to buy a FlowPlus, so I found your videos too. My only fear is that I want to use to ride whit my dog in the woods and mountains. I used to have a 26" trial, but it was without a seat, and I didn't run a dog with it.😅 I see that you are in a similar environment sometimes. I would be curious about your experience. How long can the bike withstand trails, forest roads? Should I be afraid to breaking or cracking the frame, fork, etc.?
    Can a seat be raised?
I would use it mainly on the street, but sometimes I would like to run the dog in the mountains.😀
    Thank you!

Hi! You'll certainly have a better time rolling on the Inspired bike than a competition trials bike, but as far as raising the seat and riding distances, it's still going to be tough (the seat doesn't raise up). But definitely possible - and easier than the competition bike setup. I think you'll be fine, as long as you're not going on 5-10 mile missions in the mountains. I hope this helps!

I would suggest middle ring up front and likely 4/5 in the rear.
