Ultimately it's important for me not to constantly have to protect my values and steadfast healthy masculinity from being compromised. Hope that makes sense to someone.
I have a BA in social work. I graduated last year May 2015. I took a year off after I graduated college instead of just going straight to get a masters. Now that a year and a half has passed up, I am thinking Applying to grad school at the end of this year. I am terrified. I worry about the Tests I have to take to get in like GRE or even the tests I have to take during the program or after. I actually want to get my own practice. it took me this long to figure out that that is actually what I want to do now. But this video and some of your other videos you have on this similar topic are very helpful.
You should look into online MSW programs such as ( Boston university , Simmons college , USC etc ) I currently attend Boston universities online MSW program and they did not require a GRE as long as my GPA was a 3.0 and over for my undergrad. MY undergrad GPA was a 3.27 so I was fine. I honestly did not think I would get accepted but I did and so can you. I also graduated for my BA of May 2015 with my BA in human services and took off a year as well. I just started the program in Sept 2016 and so far so good. I hope this is helpful to all.
natalie taylor are thise programs really legit and certified? I've never had an online class before. And I'm already in the process of applying to Fresno State's program. Still terrified. But whoa thats great. My overall undergrad GPA was a 3.1 in college. And oh man cool. So does it seem managable? Is that online program 2 years as well? And do you think online is easier and faster maybe?
Are they legit and certified ? Of course they are legit and certified Hun. Why would I take course that aren't legit or certified then recommend it to others ? Anyhow I attend Boston University School of Social Work online as I stated before. You can visit their website to conduct your own research on the program and you can make that determination on whether or not the program is for you. You just need to conduct your research if you are serious. . Happy this was helpful for you.
natalie taylor i mant accredited. And thats just my nerves talking. I did undergrad at a private university and they were always talking about some schools not being accredited and stuff like that. I know you wouldn't waste your time of recommend it to others if it wasn't. Excuse me. And ok I will do just that. Thank you. And hope things go well with your program. I wish you much success.
SUPER helpful! I'm applying for MSW programs next year but I'm doing my visits in a couple of weeks! Thank you so much for the insight and the advice!!!
Thanks for this video. I’m currently researching and looking for a career change and am interested in a career in social work. Thank you for this perspective and laying out the options that would be available.
This was a great video. I currently work in social services with 5 yrs of direct service experience. I live in Chicago and I've been researching MSW programs. Everything you mentioned in your video about the field is very true and informative. Keep up the good wok. :)
Thanks for emphasizing the importance of studying both the micro and macro sides. I'm increasingly interested in the macro/public health side but also want to be able to be a case manager counselor etc. It seems kindof a bummer that the 3 MSW schools in Boston im applying to (BU BC Simmons) all seem to force your hand a bit by either making you concentrate in micro or macro (or in Simmons case, focus nearly exclusively on micro). I'm hoping I can specialize in Macro at BU or BC and still take enough classes to have strong micro competencies. Wonder if people in MSW programs find themselves frustrated by being forced from the start to concentrate on one aspect rather than learn both and and concentrate more on one side in the second year. Part of me wants to return to Chicago ur shoutout to the growing need for social work there making me thing about my old hometown (sentimental sigh)
Thanks for your suggestions, I am considering a career in the Social Work profession and now have more meaningful factors to consider before applying to schools in my area.
Thank you for posting this! I am actually considering going back to get my Masters. However, i am struggling with deciding between getting a masters in Social Work or Counseling. I am wanting to work in the school systems in California and do counseling. I have heard going with a MSW is the best route and not as limiting as a Masters in Counseling. What is your take on this? I am interested in providing therapy but it does seem like MSW is a much broader field. Any feedback would be great!
Tiffany Aluko me too!! I was torn between and msw, school counseling or rehabilitation counseling. I think I'm going with msw because like you said it's not as limiting
Hi Tiffany. I'm curious on which path you ended up taking regarding school. I will be getting my BA and then planned on getting my MSW as well and I want to be a counselor/therapist and was told an MSW opens more doors than just a counseling degree/license (LCSW versus LPC) so that is what I am probably going to do since you can still be a counselor with an MSW.
About GRE, yeah, funny thing. I'm currently an MSW student in NYU and I've never taken the GRE. I still don't even know what that really is lol. But anywho, great informative video. I think it's always great to get the word about social work, cause on TH-cam I get the feeling that our field is just not understood. On my vlog about my student debt situation, I got a lot of comments that were like, "why did you borrow so much money for a liberal arts degree?" Yeah, very weird and ridiculous that so many people think social work is a liberal arts degree lol. It really is one of the most under-appreciated and challenging fields and requires a lot of empathy and expertise. I feel this field needs advocacy itself cause it's so misunderstood and of course, underpaid.
Thanks a lot for this video. It helped me lot to clear my doughts and misconceptions.I am from India and I have always been told that social work have more opportunities in clinical and psychiatric field especially abroad. But I am interested in macro social work.Thank you💖
I don't know whether I want to just do counseling or actually be a social worker. I am in my third year of college, towards the Bachelor of Social Work. I really just want to help people. Your video makes social work sound harder than I thought it would be for the Masters part, I didn't even know what a GRE is, I can't quit school and I don't really have a back up career plan. Thank you for making the video. I don't really have any questions.
I watched your video again i graduated with the bsw and now am looking at the msw. You still make it seem difficult, one thing I wanted to add is that if you become a licensed clinical social worker then you can do the therapy with your own practice. How are you doing? Going to check if you've made any other videos. You gave good advice that is still relevant today.
thank u so much hun. This info was quite helpful.i hv plans to work with an NGO immediately I conclude my prog in dec.now I want to holistically look for reutable organization to run my internship programme.God bless you
Great advice! I've been going back and fourth about whether or not it's worth it to get an MSW...your information and professional experience in Social work is very helpful.
Great video fam...I'm starting my MSSW in the fall after taking a few years off from school. If anyone else out there is like me and almost dropped out of their undergrad degree they will probably need to take the GRE and submit scores to be admitted into a program lol. All of the programs I applied to required it since my undergrad gpa was subpar...luckily, I took it right after I graduated so I still had scores to submit.
***** Yeah..I'm one of the students that every FAQ page says will "rarely be admitted." Haha I did some great undergrad research though so I think that helped a lot. Thank you for your kind words and I hope you achieve great success in the field! Much love.
Wonderful video! Informative, concise and well presented as a first step! I have a feeling you are doing great things, would love to know what you have gone on to do in Sw. :)
But from what I understand you can work primarily as an independent psychotherapist, right? Im interested in MSW because it meets in the middle of my background/interests in education, non-profit social justice work & counseling. I like that one can be a counselor yet have other options.
How do you get social work experience during undergrad? I'm a psych major and thinking about going into an MSW program to become a LSCW. I mainly have research experience and not much of anything related to human/social services. I do have experience working with kids since that's the population I want to work with in the future. Also, can you make a video in the future about why you chose to went into social work instead of the psychology field? Love this video
Thanks so much for this video! I am a high school senior, and was inspired to do social work by my foster sisters. However, I am really interested in being a NICU social worker! Would getting a bachelor's and master's in Social Work be the right path? Also I am looking to attend school in Maryland in the future, maybe sophomore year, I am currently in PA. I like MD and have researched that it has many social work opportunities.
Yeah, you can definitely make a great living as a social worker. I've met and know a few millionaire LCSWs who are living proof to me and one who has currently taken me under her wing of guidance as I pursue my MSW. It always annoys me how people assume you can't or don't make any money in the field of social services.
hey , this video was really awesome and motivated me for real, specially the last part the you spoke about another opportunities that can be done with this major. i wanted to ask you if you can share more information about these other creative opportunities maybe in another video just about these other jobs that allow these graduated students to do with this degree, i would be really thankful. and again that was a really good video and maybe share what you do right now ;)
I just got my msw and passed the licensing, but I wish I hadn’t gone down this road. Income sucks, pretty sure I’m going to go back to school in the next couple of years and do something in the medical field..honestly wouldn’t recommend unless you actually want to do this line of work.
Thank you so much for this video! I finished my bachelor degree in sociology and psychology in the UK in summer 2014 and working on applications for a counselling-related master's in the US. Your video definitely cleared up some myths! I'm wondering though, like you said many school don't care about GRE much, I do notice that they instead place a great emphasis on working experiences. Are there many mature students in MSW class who come in with loads working experiences on hands? Does it help to take two to three years out and work at non-profit org? I feel that it will help prepare me better for what awaits me in MSW but I am not sure, and this hesitation really drags my application process down. will really appreciate your help! xx
Great you have your undergrad in Sociology! I am wondering if you could tell me the difference between Applied Sociology and Social Work. I don't want to do case files all day, and I certainly do not want to do research as a way of life. My Ideal career choice would be one that help people find and connect to resources, advocate for social change in the system, and counseling.. So basically impacting lives directly and indirectly.
+Skyler Carrington im sorry i never really studied applied sociology in depth. But if you get a masters in that, its more research. Social work is more getting out there and working in the field with people and communities directly
Great video! Thank you for taking the time to make this video! I was wondering, besides internships, what relevant jobs or social work experiences would you suggest while working on AA in sociology at a community college before transferring to a university for BA in sociology? Thanks!
Such an awesome video! You opened my eyes to so much, and put words to some of the feelings I already had! I am also living in the Chicagoland area, and have been researching different MSW programs here. I was sort of leaning toward UIC... Do you know much about this program? Thank you so much for you wonderful information:)!
***** Wow, u responded so quickly! Thank you so much:). That is so ironic that that is the program u graduated from:)!!! U definitely just confirmed my decision to go there! Will definitely let you know I have more questions! Thank you again for you helpfulness and timely response:)!!!!
This is such a great video. I am a recent graduate with my bachelor's in interior design who is considering going a different route with my career. I want to help people. I love when you said being a social worker is being an advocate for mental health. I am also living in the Chicago area. Any advice for someone considering this field? This is an area that is definitely worth my time looking into. Thank you!
What do you recommend for students starting MSW programs in the fall? I don't know if I should focus on memorizing rules, doing all the reading, studying in groups, highlighting everything in sight, focusing on the field placement over class, etc. I did grad school once and "just being a good person" did not help me get good grades. What things should all students do if they want to hit the ground running in MSW school?
Jeffery Mingo hmmm. good question. Well every program is different. I didn't think my program was based around memorizing facts. It was more about understanding concepts. I think the reading is important, but don't overwhelm yourself with reading every little thing. You gotta master the art of skimming the text, so you can get the main idea. And my school definitely placed a larger emphasis on our internships. As far as studying in groups, I honestly didnt have to do much studying. My programs was more about completing research papers, writing a mock grant proposal, creating a business plan for a non profit organization, etc. I think from the first month, you will get a feel of how your program is structured and what you will need to do to survive it.
Hi, I found your video really informative! I am currently deciding on which grad school to apply to, where in Chicago did you decide to attend? Thank you for making this video!
This is sooo helpful! I have a degree in psychology like you! I'm currently working on my application for an MSW program. Did your program last 3 years or so, since you didn't have a degree in social work?
This was very helpful. I just received my BSW Sunday and I'm currently looking at graduate schools! I just want to know how is the transition from undergrad to grad school?
Although the CSWE regulates the curriculum and all accredited schools of social work teach the same social work core concepts, school status and names matter. It is true you can get a very good general social work education at any school of social work. However, status and names come to play with regards to the alumni and your professional network. #USCMSW
After completing my BSW and MSW, I have joined in a primary school as teacher. Now I want to study MSW in a Canadian University. My question is how can I relate my profession to my subject and make a strong Statement of Purpose??
@ Gabbz Taylor, did you film this after you got your MSW? I see that you are in Korea now and I am wondering what inspired you to do so now? I just did that and now I am back in N.America applying for MSW programs.
@TheGiftofGab, this was really helpful. I'm graduating in May with an undergrad degree in Criminal Justice, and I know that I want to get my MSW. However,I don't have any volunteer experience or references (completing my degree online). What do MSW programs look for in applicants? What would you suggest I do before applying?
This video is very helpful and informative, thank you. I am graduating with my BA in Women's studies this May. I am looking into the MSW program at TX state university, but since it's about an hour away from my house I am looking to do the program online. What do y'all think about that? Also i have chosen to apply to this grad school because they don't require a GRE!
sarah gonzalez I am applying to Our Lady of The Lake University. They have an online MSW program and is Accredited by the Council on Social Work Accreditation. The program is about 3 years.
Thank you for this video! I'm in the middle of my application process. Im about to graduate with a bachelors in Political Science, So I've been worrying about not having a degree in Psychology. Should I be worried? Do Universities look mostly at GPA? Or do they look at your Resume more? Also, I was told to take a few years off between undergrad and grad school to get more experience, does it matter? Sorry for all the questions!
Right now I'm about to get my AA in Human Services and I'm thinking of transferring to get my BA but I'm not sure if I should get my BA in social work or just stick to human services. I'm so confused 😭 lol
Well if you get a BA in Social Work, then its more specialized and universally understandable degree...more marketable i think. But it depends on your long term goals! im sure u will make the right choice for you :) Good luck
Do you know anything of application processes concerning Masters programs in psychology? Does it seem like the GRE isn't as necessary specifically in Chicago or just in certain programs? I was looking at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Specifically, the Masters of Counseling with a concentration in Trauma and Crisis Intervention.
You mention your going to a university in Chicago . I'm actually transferring next semester from community college . I was wondering what university you went to ? I'm undecided of what type of social worker to be .
+susana ojeda I went to the University of Illinois at Chicago. University of Chicago is also great, just more expensive. You will have time and opportunities to learn about and choose a Social Work concentration while in the MSW program. No worries.
I'll be moving to Chicago and applying for MSW programs for fall2015. I have a lot of research experience in race/ gender and business. I was thinking of doing a mental health/therapy concentration plus infusing personal studies of race and how it affects mental health. I can see you were at UIC I was wondering if there is anyone in the department that I can contact- besides admissions to tell me more about UIC's MSW? My second question is have you heard anything about Evanston or experienced that area? My last question is which concentration of social work did you choose and why? and which has the most job opportunities in Chicago in your opinion? Eventually I may move back to Canada and I can honestly say that the MSW pay is very high in most provinces and the benefits tend to be better as well.
jd/social work I am an advocate because the burnout is not the way to help. Every person has the answers to their problem through motivational mutual help and discovery. As a social worker, I will not do the work for those who must be responsible for their own healing. Force feeding people never work.
Hi! I'm currently doing my BSW and I would like to know which are my choices for a master or if I could do a master on something besides social work. 😘
Good video any advice? I just got denied from Social Work program twice I don't even have Bachelors in Social Work my undergrad advisor never placed me in field placement her reasoning... kept losing my information but then later on I found out and felt wasn't an accident as she said and no I'm not joking " you're disabled will never amount to anything in life let alone social work" and I was forced to leave Bachelors of Social Work also had severe Health concerns then so my cumulative undergrad is pretty low I did end up getting into a masters in Christian Studies my grades made address to turn around with a 3.83 GPA and I still got denied. It's frustrating because I really feel like did this is what I should have been doing with my life. Even joining NASW!
Firstly, I’m very sad to hear this. This is horrible and your undergrad advisor should be fired. No one deserves to go through what you went through with her. I would make connections with MSW grad school admissions counselors, be very clear on your interests, ask them whether or not they feel you are a good candidate and if they say no, ask them why not and work to address those issues so you can be as prepared as possible. I’m wishing the best for you. Thank you.
I have a question, if you graduate from MSW program in a different state. For instance say, Ohio State and you move back to your home state or another state- can you sit for the license the website is confusing....

This was helpful
Thank you for making this video. I am thinking about getting a degree in social work and I was looking for more information on it. :)
Thanks for this video. I’m currently researching and looking for a career change and am interested in a career in social work. Thank you for this perspective and laying out the options that would be available.
Thank you so much for the info, especially touching on how challenging and frustrating social work is.
This was a great video. I currently work in social services with 5 yrs of direct service experience. I live in Chicago and I've been researching MSW programs. Everything you mentioned in your video about the field is very true and informative. Keep up the good wok. :)
Thanks for this video. It has been helpful. I am currently applying for a MSW program. I hope to see more of your videos on social works.
Thanks for your suggestions, I am considering a career in the Social Work
profession and now have more meaningful factors to consider before applying to schools in my area.
Hi Tiffany, can you let us what your final decision was. I'm in the same boat as the other two ladies below. Thank You
About GRE, yeah, funny thing.
I am currently looking into an MSW program--this was helpful! Thank you!!
Thanks a lot for this video. It helped me lot to clear my doughts and misconceptions.I am from India and I have always been told that social work have more opportunities in clinical and psychiatric field especially abroad. But I am interested in macro social work.Thank you💖
I found this video to be so helpful. Love your personality, too! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.
Thanks for the information. I am in the Human Services program now and looking to get to the BSW in Fall 2018 or sooner.
Hey did you do it?
Thanks a lot. I am applying MSW in Australia. but your info still very useful for me.
I'm a social work major thanks for the insight
This was very helpful and helped me get a better well-rounded view of an MSW. Thank you!
Thanks a lot. It helps me a lot as I am thinking about going to apply for msw. Please, share more on the topic.
great video thank you for the info especially the misconception of the standard of living for social workers
thank YOU SOOOO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!! any questions i had prior, you answered. i want to work for a non-profit organization so good luck to you hun
Quaneisha Brown thank you so much! :)
I find this video to be very helpful to upcoming social workers who wish to pursue their MSW
+Wali thank you so much for watching and commenting !
This video helped me out a lot about choosing the human service major in college.
Do they own their practices??
hey , this video was really awesome and motivated me for real, specially the last part the you spoke about another opportunities that can be done with this major.
i wanted to ask you if you can share more information about these other creative opportunities maybe in another video just about these other jobs that allow these graduated students to do with this degree, i would be really thankful.
and again that was a really good video
and maybe share what you do right now ;)
these videos coming soon! Thanks
Thank you!
I loved this video, thank you so much! It def. helped me out a lot!
***** thx for this info. "Research papers, grants, business plans"!?! That sounds real intense.
insightful info. btw i love love love your hair.
Hi, I found your video really informative! I am currently deciding on which grad school to apply to, where in Chicago did you decide to attend? Thank you for making this video!
This was so informative! I really enjoyed it! Thank you!!
Very informative! Thanks for posting this video!
Very informative video! Thanks for the great information!
This is sooo helpful! I have a degree in psychology like you! I'm currently working on my application for an MSW program. Did your program last 3 years or so, since you didn't have a degree in social work?
Naturally Amanda it's 2 years. It could be some in 1 year if you have a BSW and doing advance track. I read it up online.
i plan on doing the online schooling for my msw
None of the schools I'm applying to require the GRE. Boston U only requires it if your GPA is below 3.0.
Thank you so much this was everything I needed to start school you spoke to my situation and my doubt thank you so much !!
+Samantha McCorvey im happy it helped!
You are so knowledgeable thank you. I learn so much
Thanks for your advice really helped.
The program is about 3 years.
lstubbs614 how did you like OLOL?
So what is the ideal route if you ARE only interested in counseling/therapy?
Good question, good answer. I had a similar question but you just answered it, Thanks
I totally understand how you feel, that is my current situation.
With at least a BA, you can get a license if it's an approved program
such great advice! Thank you.
Thank you for this information!!!
Do you know anything of application processes concerning Masters programs in psychology? Does it seem like the GRE isn't as necessary specifically in Chicago or just in certain programs? I was looking at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Specifically, the Masters of Counseling with a concentration in Trauma and Crisis Intervention.
what program are you in and how have you studied. whats your learning or study style
Very good video and informative
You mention your going to a university in Chicago . I'm actually transferring next semester from community college . I was wondering what university you went to ? I'm undecided of what type of social worker to be .
+susana ojeda I went to the University of Illinois at Chicago. University of Chicago is also great, just more expensive. You will have time and opportunities to learn about and choose a Social Work concentration while in the MSW program. No worries.
This was very informative. Thank you so much.
Force feeding people never work.
hi, hope you're doing well. can u please guide us about pursuing MSW from any open university.....for distant learners
Thank you.
@@MindyourSociety she was did this to various other students apart from me still makes battle rough though.
I have a question, if you graduate from MSW program in a different state. For instance say, Ohio State and you move back to your home state or another state- can you sit for the license the website is confusing....
great information
thank you! very helpful to watch your video .
This is super helpful! Thank you :)
I have an MBA in healthcare management! How much of this will count towards a MSW? And thanks for the video.
Your video was very informative. Thanks
