- In this exclusive 2018 KPIG interview, "Sleepy" John Sandidge talks in depth with Michael "Nez" Nesmith about his "dual-channel" career, including the release of "The First National Band - Live at the Troubador" record and a then-recent Monkees tour with Mickey Dolenz. You can pick up the album at videoranch3d.com.
This is also a rare, behind-the-scenes look at our "Please Stand By" program, which includes off mic banter during the music and commercial breaks. A great insight into one of our all-time favorite KPIG (and KFAT) artists!

RIP Mr. Nesmith. My late Mom had zero awareness of The Monkees, but for some reason bought some First National Band 8-Tracks at a garage sale and loved to play them while she would clean her townhouse in the early '80s!
It wasn’t until I’d bought my 3rd Nesmith LP (Ranch Stash) in the mid 70s that I discovered he’d even stared in the Monkees ( it was mentioned in the liner notes) , I was a bit too young when the Monkees first happened and so they went over my head really and my older Sisters were into The Beatles, and by the time the re-runs happened a few years later I was into other things… besides, they weren’t really the big deal as much over here in the U.K by the time the 1970s hit anyway tbh… So I guess I’m one of those few who’s Michael’s stuff came first for me …just like your late mum.
Mike and Micky tour shows that were videoed are really good. The backing ensemble were fabulous and Micky and Mike were fantastic. The sound production was fantastic.
💛that Nesmith mentioned Michael Martin Murphy. I saw Nesmith 2x's in 2018 & attended meet & greets. He was the best!
Mike Nesmith was nobody’s fool. He was an intelligent guy and knew what was up. RIP 🙏
Fantastic! Thanks for posting this!
Thank you so much for sharing this ❤
Absolutely Awesome Interview Guys
What is all the jangle noise in the background?. Some ignorant
Too bad the album played over the interview.
Yeah -- I couldn't get through it.
Yeah, I mean, is it that hard to separate them in a mix? And isn't anyone else around to wave their hands and say: "Turn off the music"!?
This turned into a mess. 😩
Or at least subtitle it? Cmon, guys! It’s one of his last interviews. Get yer head out.
What is the name of the album?
Live at the Troubadour.
First National Band Redux Live at the Troubadour.
Outstanding album. I was fortunate enough to get signed copy made out to me.
Old Man Lum come down to the house again today. Ole feller looking real good for pert near 80. Walking good too. He had his bottle of Old Crow with him. Sang 3 or 4 songs. One of the songs was "Papa Gene's Blues". Awful good rendition. Not near as good as Mr. Nesmiths, but better than a bullfrog.
Oh my god what you put him through, with the dogs and the inane commercial break chatter. You can literally see Mike almost falling over from boredom as Sleepy John tells his origin story. By the questions, the interviewer clearly knew little of the Monkees and less of Nesmith’s work. Wasted opportunity.
The dogs name is Diego it should have been called Ditty Diego/War Chant from Head you know PAHAHAHHAHA!!!!!!
This is just stupid and a loss of Michael's time!
Speak up
He's the only one that becoming a Monkee wasn't digging out of a hole, were he as beholden to it as the others they collectively might not have had it in them to push back at the whole musical representation thing, but Nez was already made, he could turn his nose up at the 'sweetner' cheques
