    How has this not been picked up by Disney and made into a feature length movie? The music is beyond awesome!

      Aida is Disney's show. The Walt Disney Company bought the rights to the book in 1994 with the intent of making it an animated feature film. They later decided that the story content was too mature for an animated film, and instead decided to allow Walt Disney Theatrical Productions to turn the story into a Broadway musical.
      Disney had just finished working with Elton John and Tim Rice on the Lion King, and Disney was so impressed with their work that Elton and Tim were asked to create Aida. The show hit off-Broadway in 1998 and landed on Broadway in 2000.
      Disney's Aida is scheduled to have a Broadway revival and also tour the U.S. in 2021. Depending on the success of the revival, Disney is also considering a big budget film version of the stage play.

    I'm just impressed with the fact that Aida and Radames have some actual chemistry. I've seen far too many iterations of this show where the two lead actors don't really put off that they're in love with each other, and it sucks. But these two pulled it off really well, considering how quickly the love story goes down in this show.

      Same here!!! My school saw it in middle school or 6th grade right after 9-11. We couldn't go as a school group but any parents that wanted to take their kids could go and the teachers would meet us in NYC. I live in NJ about 2 hrs away and my dad grew up there, he didn't want to miss going so we went and my mom and I lived it because we love anything and everything with Egypt. I can totally understand why people are angry about the race of the characters.
    But I also understand that it’s hard to completely satisfy the race of the original characters depending on the race of the students in the school/those who audition.
    I’ve seen that a few times with some school productions, and while I’d prefer racial accuracy, if it’s not totally possible for the high school, I focus more on the performances. I know things can’t always be perfect, so I try to look at what is good overall.

    • @austinvenditelli7850
      @austinvenditelli7850 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      But then, if you don't have the people, why do the show? It's like buying the rights to Cats, knowing you don't have any dancers.

    • @zabellak6831
      @zabellak6831 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Austin Venditelli Although I loathe white-washing, it is rarely intentional, and it's ridiculous to only do certain shows if you don't have the accurate racial population despite having students with the talent to perform the parts well, WHICH THEY ABSOLUTELY DID. So, though I understand where you're coming from, I would rather they cast for talent rather than racial accuracy

    • @homeiswonderland
      @homeiswonderland 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Lol this is a high school production? Guys, on Broadway we should be all about diversity, because it means whether or not people get paid. (And yes of course diversity is good in general, representation NEEDS to happen, white-washing sucks, omg I'm so happy Kristoff in Frozen's production is played by a Black person, yay). This is SCHOOL. You really... can't be mad at a high school. They're not exactly making thousands off tickets. They just want to give kids opportunity and experience.

    • @ginamartin2094
      @ginamartin2094 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@zabellak6831 No they shouldn't do the show, I don't think it's ridiculous at all. It's called life! You are not always going to be able to just do what you want. Theatre is all about storytelling, yes? This was NOT their story to tell despite how much talent they have. You shouldn't get to overlook very big aspects about the character or the show in general just for your convenience.

    • @pilisanicolettemackey4090

      homeiswonderland and besides that most musicals from the western canon highlight European looking people (I.e-white and or light skinned people) in their stories. As a black actress there are not enough musicals in the MT canon with roles written to Star people of my race. There’s a handful and a lot of those have been written recently. For those who fit a more euro centric aesthetic the western musical theater canon is filled with ethnically homogenous shows ( with sometimes one or two POC characters written in for comic relief or as servants) So much so that white/white passing actors could go their whole career only doing show with roles written for their ethnicity. Racial and ethnic minorities do not have the same wide variety of shows with roles for them to choose from. So to say that a homogenously European/white theater group, by not doing plays/musicals with roles written by and or for people of color, is limiting them is false. It’s false because 70% of the MT CANON is written by and for them. Not so for POC...we have no choice but to do shows and audition for roles not written for us...there’s only so many times you can do King and I or Miss Saignon as an Asian actor or Raisn in the Sun or Hairspray as a black actor.

      I don't know why anyone would complain about race. It's not like the Egyptians were white Europeans lol. And both "Egyptian" and "Nubian" characters have been regularly played by both races throughout the show's run, with only Radames and Aida leads traditionally being white and black, which is silly. It's theatre. They can be anything. Black, white, Latino, Asian, who cares. People of all races and appearances and even genders play all kinds of roles that they wouldn't technically fit in real life. That's the fun of theatre. Anyone can be anything on stage. People play the Elephant Man without having physical deformities. It's all in the acting.

    • @car0_lineee
      @car0_lineee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@StygianFilms that is exactly what I thought when people where complaining about the actors playing Egyptians in the Aida preview were white. Theater is about being a different person, and about being anything. For example, it would be silly if people were complaining about Mean Girls the musical because there were humans playing lions, giraffes, etc.

    • @tigersjunkyard
      @tigersjunkyard 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@car0_lineee Yeah, exactly. It's absurd. My first exposure to The Crucible was an almost all-black cast, with only two white actors in minor roles. Historically correct? No. Amazing production? Yes. I've seen black and Asian actors in Les Miserables. Did it diminish the power of the show? No. So people need to calm down about Aida being performed by white people in an area where almost everyone is white. It's THEATRE.

      28:44 Amneris really hit every note she was allowed in that arrangement. I think the choreography was designed for clarity of the vocal performance, rather than showcasing the dance break (fashion show) that was omitted.
      I think they should have done better on her costume after the towels were dropped-from my perspective, her dress wasn’t anything different than the towel wrap. Not remarkable at all, and she’s supposed to have the best wardrobe in the entire kingdom… That was my beef with that production number.

    I never would have known about this amazing musical and it’s beautiful story if my community hadn’t done it. I attended a high school of almost 3,000 students and I believe there were only 5 students of African descent, so not very diverse (although we did have quite a few of Latino descent) I would love to see this show with accurate casting, race wise, but I never would have known about it if it hadn’t been performed by a white cast. I feel it would be a shame to not know a beautiful story just because the demographic isn’t correct. And now that I know this musical, i want to see it again with more accuracy. Maybe one day, the show will become more popular and begin to have more accurate casting because more people know that it exists and want it to be portrayed correctly! At least that is my hope but what ever. My opinion and hopes aren’t important to most people 🤷🏼‍♀️

    This is a great production--they're talented singers and dancers! It's not a bad production at face value--it's really not. But, there's a reason people complain about whitewashing stories like this. "Colorblind" casting Aida is more than just ignoring a bunch of Caucasians calling each other "Nubian". The conflict of Aida is not only that Aida has to choose between her love or turning her back on her people--her love is an active oppressor of her people--something the Black race has faced more than any other ethnicity hands down. To this day, there is cultural tension surrounding interracial relationships between Black women/White males and arguably, Black people are still enslaved (i.e. 13th by Ava Duvernay). I'm not seeing the desperation for a better life. I'm not seeing Aida's pain of being a lackey to Amneris...how much easier Aida's life would be if she just looked like Amneris--combing her straight, Blonde hair...the epitome of conditioned beauty standards. The pain of knowing that something so small (skin color) could be so large of an obstacle in reality.
    These are subtexts all Black women would know to check for. People are trying to defend this by saying "It's theatre! People can be whoever they want to be". Sure. That's how it should be but it's not. People were outraged at Jelani Alladin in Frozen. People were outraged at Noma Dumezweni in Harry Potter. People were outraged at Amandla Stenberg as Rue. People were outraged at Halle Bailey and Diana Huey as Ariel. People were outraged at Hamilton. That excuse is only ever relayed when it's to defend White people playing roles they know nothing about. The Aida in this production is Middle Eastern...which is nice that they at least tried to cast the titular role as a woman of color but all people of color are not the same. The Middle Eastern experience has NOTHING to do with the African or African-American experience. That is why people criticize--there are entire layers of dramaturgical evidence and stakes missing.

    Ok so I watched this for the first time and I read the comments and I think is just disappointed that people mind if the people are the Ruth race or not , for the love of God is just wrong to think that I mean we all are the same , I’m watching a show naw and the the main characters love interest is black and in the comics she was suppose to be white but that doesn’t matter to my or to the others I think because we love haw she plays that role but there are people who hate her just for her skin colour which is wrong . My first language is Romanian that’s the place we’re I was born and were I lived for almost my whole life ... 2 years ago I moved to U.K , it was hard for me at school I spend a whole year alone , no friends because I was from other place but naw i have naw . So stop saying that the cast is wrong or the wrong colour or the wrong race because that doesn’t exists wrong doesn’t exist so for the love of God try to be more understanding about some stuff . That’s my opinion what are you going to do if you disagree, are you going to say bad stuff about me , that I am stupid or other stuff , well let me tell you something you can tell anything you want I don’t mind cause I can say something back or I can just not say anything . And the other thing you can do is if you really have a soul and fell bad about what you write . So am I wrong ?

    I was scrolling through the comments AND ALL THESE PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE RACE OF THE ACTORS. Okay, so yeah, none of them are African American. But should that matter? They wonderfully portrayed the characters the way they were meant to be portrayed. I’m going to use an example that I assume most of you will understand. Look at the OBC of Hamilton. If you don’t know, look them up. Guess what... Thomas Jefferson wasn’t African American, and he did not have a Afro. George Washington was not colored, and he was not bald. Why does such a critically acclaimed musical have actors of the “wrong” skin color? Or wrong physical features? Because it is simply not wrong. Good actors get the part. Race is not involved. ESPECIALLY in a high school show! Calm TF down people! Enjoy an amazing production of an amazing show.

      Yes, the lack of black actors does matter in a show that takes places in Eygpt and when a group of Nubian people were taken to be slaves. I felt the casting and costumes were completely WRONG and should have never seen the light of day.

    Y'all defending the casting because it's a "high school production"...it's NOT a high school production. The woman who plays Aida here is Palestinian. This production is also in Scotland. You're not gonna find many actors of color in Scotland. Also, stop saying "African American" when you really just mean black. Africans are not American unless they live in America. Sheesh.

  • @denniskeefe-warman6634

    Radames is really good, and as hard as it is to fill a high school drama class, if that's all you have is white kids, then don't let that stop you from doing the show. Acting is all about pretending to be someone you're not. So they are pretending to be Nubians and Ethiopians. My judgement is only-can they sing, can they act, and do the sets and costumes reflect the theme of the show? --Well yes they can sing, they can sort of act, the opening set was creative, the costumes...way off, not sure where those were coming from, but overal this was very good.

    Interesting production. Vocals are decent, though Radames needs to back off on his belt in places, instead of screeching and going way flat. What’s with the chorale reprise of “Written in the Stars?” I don’t like how Amneris is completely visible during “Written in the Stars” as well. In the original Broadway production, Amneris is hiding behind a tree. Once the song is done, there’s a pause in the scene, and she steps out from behind the tree, to the gasps of the audience. It’s more effective.

    aida is a wonderful show with wonderful music, but i DO NOT know why theater companies without the right demographic put on shows that need black actors. aida just needs to put put on with a black cast. that’s just a fact. anything else is disrespectful.
    beyond that? the first few scenes are just so awfully directed, i could barely watch past the bathing scene. radames is supposed to be snarky, a know-it-all, there’s supposed to be more there than just outright angry and rude. and absolutely not power hungry. the ESSENCE of radames’ character is that he’s NOT power hungry, he wants to see the world, he wants to be FREE

    The lighting was great, too bad it did not expose the poor casting, costumes and sets. I had the pleasure of performing in a 2004 touring production of AIDA and the casting was a COMPLETE mixture of a people with strong voices. I am so tired of whitewashing a show and calling it color-blind casting, yes it is color-blind casting with no color. Clearly, Elton Joh didn't see it, for if he did it would have been shut down.

      This is an AMATEUR company from SCOTLAND!!! You try and cast a show where the country's population is only 5M and is predominantly white as in 96% and you aren't paying anyone to come do the show because its not professional. If people of the correct ethnic demographic for the parts dont come to the auditions, theres not a lot you can do when nobodys getting paid to be in it.

      Excuse you, I have done research. If it was a high scheme PROFESSIONAL play, I would understand the race thing. but if a high school is doing Aida, you do not just get a lead for being the certain ethnicity. you give the part to whomever can sing it. Get your head out of the "she ain't black!" cloud because I can promise you, they didn't specifically cast a white girl just because she was white. her vocals were perfect. Stop complaining, the only way your complaint would be valid here had it been Broadway whitewashing the play.
