The Malmsteen strat is a gem of a guitar. Very playable once you get used to it. The feel of the neck is amazing. The pickups are stacked humbucking single coils. Low-ish output. Very organic sounding. Surprisingly. I think it sounds the best thru a high gain Marshall.
Back in the day which for me was 1987-88… maybe 89? I ordered one of the early Yngwie strats. Back then you could get them with rosewood fretboards. I had sonic blue, rosewood fretboard. Wish I still had it because it would certainly be a collectors item at this point!
You never end to surprise us. 😊 And perhaps Fender should pay you for demonstrating so well the versatility of such a guitar,. Great job, done with class.
I have been scalloping my necks for 40 years. But what I do is leave the first 4 Frets alone. If I don't I tend to squeeze the open chord sharp. A lot of freedom with a scalloped fretboard board.
Replace the stock tremolo with a callaham vintage narrow (no mods needed) to cure the high e slipping off issue. Did it to mine and it's awesome. Better feeling tremolo too
It makes me laugh to see comments from people who believe that an instrument is made to play a specific type of music. You probably don't know the meaning of the word "instrument"
I have owned a couple YJM Strats. The HUGE benefit of the scalloped board is that you get a great grip on the strings with bending and a lot of control. This is why Ritchie Blackmore uses them. He sands between the frets himself. Plus, frictionless finger vibrato, which Yngwie is a master of. I am surprised more Blues players do not use them. And it is actually harder to play faster on scalloped board.
@@tonycarpaccio9550 People often try the YJM Strat and push too hard wanting to feel wood on their fingertips. I always tell them to just play normal and they usually ease up and start to have some fun with it. Most people end up liking it.
I haven't found it's harder to play fast on a scalloped guitar? Or easier for that matter... If you press hard on the strings it will sound bad, so it kind of forces you to play very light which in itself probably help with the speed.
How not to play sharp constantly?!? Those scallops are more like deep valleys. Interesting. Ya know, Ritchie Blackmore only scalloped the high frets of his guitar.
Wow oh wow!, one of the most beautiful guitar I've seen. Love the scalloped necks and the gloss finish.😍 I will surely buy that one, I also realize you can play really good jazz on a Neo-Classical guitar. Cheers Tomo. Liked and subscribed! 💯👍
The straplocks are on, they're just recessed into the body. When you put the enclosed strap pin (3:19) on your strap, the insert goes right inside the body and locks in place. Also, the toggle switch caps often shatter or break during shipping because it rubs against the inside of the case, so they remove it for shipping purposes.
Scalloped is nicer for bending especially blue's.. very comfortable for me.. but not funky strumming kind of style which sound always out of tune in my ear 😅
5:20 haha, legend! yngwie himself said the same years ago at budokan after some out-of-character comping with dom13 and 9 chords. probably unintentional but hilarious nonetheless.
It's cool to see that the guitar came from Wild Wood, that's my hometown guitar shop! Might have to go try a scalloped guitar sometime soon if they still have some in stock..
This is the first time I watch someone play it slow and jazzy. I Got mine a year ago, and now forget how to play it slow,, it has some kind of possessed thing to urge me play fast 😅
The Yngwie Strat has always been a cool guitar. The neck is the real party piece and it has special pickups and controls that gets you clean Malmsteen tone out of the box (if you can play Yngwie). The tuners, however, should be lockers for 2400 bucks out the door/shipped price. This is one of the most iconic guitars, and it makes me wonder why this particular model doesnt see periodic modernization similar to the Steve Vai Gem guitars made by Ibanez unless Malmsteen (known for being picky, spoiled, and super stubborn) declared it to be perfect 40 years ago when he first got it. To circle back on the neck; Eric Johnson, Yngwie, and SRV all played scalloped necks. Id really like to see Fujita Sensei put this through its paces and really flog it as an all purpose strat so we can get an idea of how it plays in the hands of a guy who has fluency in most all the playing styles. Is the neck great, or is it a pain in the ass for funk or chords or jazz, or tricky for the average player? Do modern jumbo or medium jumbos do it better? I've always heard theres nuances to the neck but not from someone who I could really count on to reliably hammer a guitar and tell me precisely how it does everything, at least up until Tomo Fujita acquired one. TomoFujitaMusic is waaaay more than a guitar review channel, but i think it would be fun to really spend some time and thoughtfulness with this guitar.
The tuners are what Yngwie spec'd himself and locking ones are totally unnecessary with vintage style tuners like this. If the guitar is setup properly it will stay in tune without any locking. Also, Eric Johnson and SRV NEVER played scalloped fretboard guitars. Ritchie Blackmore and Uli Jon Roth did though. Finally: the YJM strats do get periodic updates, it's just that they're not super visible and not often. The newer ones use threated brass inserts for the neck to attach to the body, the pickups have changed, the strap locks too.
Less is more! Nice chords. I wished Yngwie could listen to me and get a lefthanded version of the guitar. It's a funny video online somewhere when he says in Swedish pointing to a guitar "and this guitar is up and down!" meaning it's a leftie. Thanks Yngwie for noticing!
Hi Tomo, I've had a YJM for a long time and love it. It begs to be played tuned a half-step down (Eb) and heavy blues with aggressive bends using overdrive.

Beautiful guitar. I enjoyed this demo as you allowed me to hear the guitar itself without a bunch of distortion and reverb over it trying to play like Yngwie. Thanks Tomo!
