Being a huge MetallicA fan, following what they have done since 1986. I don't think anyone can say that Jason Newsted wasn't one, if not their favorite member of MetallicA, current or past. I started listening to MetallicA not long after Cliff past away in September of 86'. So Jason was the bassist I grew up with and it bothered me a great deal when he took off from the group. And I never blamed him, never hated him for it, and never stopped listening to any music he wrote or recorded. He was the most energetic member of any band that I can recall watching. Props to Newsted, and I am glad he is doing well.
Super great guy, too. First met him on the And Justice tour, and each Metallica tour after. He was great in Flotsam & Jetsam, and all his post-Metallica projects as well.
He gave Metallica everything he had. And they didn't want him to write anything for Metallica or himself. So he left one of the biggest bands in the world. Huge respect.

Metallica/Guns N Roses/Faith No More was my first concert. 1991(or 92?) at the Pontiac Silver Dome. One of the greatest shows to this day. GnR didn't come out when they were supposed to(surprise!) and Metallica played for an extra 45 minutes or so *after* playing for like 2 hours. True legends. Amazing show.

Metallica, Lubbock TX, Feb 1992. I worked for the ticket-seller for this show, and was given VIP tickets. The band KILLED it, and every member of the band looked like it was the first show they ever played. The crowd was unusually amped, and the band seemed like they were feeding of the crowd. Encore after encore, the crowd was great, the band was great. I just remember how I was thrilled that the biggest band in the world was excited to play in my college town. I'll never forget it!
IF it "looked like it was the first show they ever played" it would have sucked. Very very badly. It takes hundreds of practice shows for a band like that to relax and play with authority. From the writing to the recording, thousands of repetitions to get it to where it looks effortless...to you.
Great interview bro! Keep em comin. Jason was a huge force in Metallica's success and greatness. Older Metalliheads remember his talent and stage intensity and how much he held everything together. Justice for All at the Cow Palace SF (Daly City) show was incredible!! Saturday nite home show...never forget that jam!
