  • The eighth lecture on women of the Gilded Age in Southampton will be focused on Jessie Woolworth Donahue. In the sad saga of her life lies dramatic proof that money does not always buy happiness. Happy and spoiled as a child, her life spirals downward afterward. Spending on a massive scale does not buy Society’s respect and nor does it ease the pain of a bad marriage and a wayward son.

Jessie Woolworth was an aunt on her mother’s side to Barbara Hutton. Barbara’s mother killed herself when Barbara was about 6 years old, so her mother’s inheritance (same as Jessie’s), was invested by her stockbroker Father (brother of E.F. Hutton) and given to her on her 18th birthday. Barbara’s coming out party cost $60,000 at the height of the Depression and she had to go to Europe until the scandal died down. She is famous as “the poor little rich girl”, the movie of which is free on TH-cam, and the song “(I Found a Million Dollar Baby) At The 5 and 10 Cent Store”. Her Grandfather was F.W. Woolworth who built the “5 and Dime” empire. He was born to an Irish laborer and became one of the richest men in America. It really is a fascinating part of history.

Thankyou Mary wonderful ! ...Frances is my great Aunt ..my favorite Breese ...thank you for using many of the images i supplied you. Many of us in the family have a lot of fill in ... A couple of my favorites is Andy Warhol and the factory crew filmed at the Sandbox in 1967 all signing the guest book, including Edie Sedgewick..also i have images! .. and there a day after my scrawl in the book at nine years old thanking her. Also the Orchard's music listening room designed by White is owned by the town i think and is publicly available for weddings and special events.

But we aren't talking about the Breese family. How does Frances Breese figure into the Woolworth family?

At '22:31' , you show a photo labled 'Jimmie and the duchess' , this is not a photo of Wallis Simpson , Duchess of Windsor !
I find it strange that you speak at length of Jessie's great and vast wealth , yet you do not mention her inheritance at the death of her father, Frank Winfield Woolworth ( April 8, 1919 ) as in the amount she recieved in his will ? You also do not mention how much her estate was at the time of her death , is there a reason for this ?
    Thank you.

John Ohara, you can read the last will and testament of Jessie's @ www.linkedin.com/pulse/jessie-woolworth-donahue-youngest-daughter-fw-my-21pg-donahue from her only grandchild, Wooly's daughter.

      @@jflan92 'OMG' !!!
Thank you ! How very kind of you to reply to my comment.
I have had a great interest in the Woolworth family since becoming an enormous fan of Barbara Hutton, I think I have read every book , watched every documentary and of course the movie !
This then made me want to research your late grandmother as I read how kind and supportive she had been to Barbara throughout her life, though I have found it difficult to obtain a lot of detailed information, there is lots on your uncle Jimmy for obvious reasons LOL
I have also researched your late father Wooly ( Woolworth Donahue 1913-1972) And I know Barbara became close with him again before his death.
Thank you so much for this link !
I hope you are well during these difficult times due to the pandemic.
Many thanks and greetings from Ireland !
      Thank you
      John xo

Wish I could give one moment to go back in time and be a fly on the wall at one of the Gilded Age party.

Did Jessie's older son, known as Wooley, have children of his own? Does anyone know what became of that part of the Woolworth-Donahue family?
