  • The sixth lecture on women of the Gilded Age in Southampton will focus on the Cryder Triplets. After their debut in 1900, the Cryder Triplets are celebrities as well as curiosities in New York society. Their marriages bring them wealth and glamorous lives but, for one of them, family life also brings scandal and tragedy.

I love your lectures. Found this after your installment on Consuelo Vanderbilt and now am watching every one that’s been uploaded. Thank you for these!
I’ve heard of the Woodward murder case and that’s how I had initially heard of the Cryder twins. I recall feeling somewhat sympathetic toward Ann, as I thought Elsie sounded like a mother in law from hell, but she after hearing her whole story, I can sort of understand her anger and resentment. I thought she had some daughters as well. Was William (Billy) an only child or did Elsie have daughters? As for the other triplets-did they have children? It isn’t mentioned here.
I recall that the Duchess of Windsor by some accounts, actually liked Ann Woodward. Still, Ann was generally considered gauche and classless, wore the wrong colored
shoes (I don’t know how I know this, but know it’s something she was criticized for) and at Elsie’s direction, was sentenced to a judgement by society that was no less harsh than a prison sentence.
What I don’t understand and continues to puzzle me are Ann’s 2 sons (and Elsie’s grandsons) both jumping out of windows to their deaths. There must have been some insanity in the family for that to have been possible or could it have been foul play in at least one case? Did Elsie initially gain custody of them after their father was murdered? It didn’t sound like they had much of a chance with the level of dysfunction in their life.
I guess a good rule of thumb might be, “don’t marry your father’s mistress! “

Thank you, Mary and Connor. This was very interesting and inspires me to research these families more... Reading about the Woodward mansion brought me to this page... this is some great information here .. daytoninmanhattan.blogspot.com/2015/03/the-wm-woodward-mansion-no-9-east-86th.html Elsie had four daughters who she named three of them after the triplets (Elizabeth (Elsie,) Edith, Ethel, Sarah and son Woodward Jr) Women used to name their daughters after themselves ... as in Juniors... seems so odd to me

In her book The Glitter and the Gold, Consuelo Vanderbilt wrote, "a frequent and welcome guest [at Crowhurst, Surrey, England] was Ethel Higgins, later Mrs Arthur Fowler ... she was a gay and delightful visitor. During the war we worked together for our American Hospital..."
